Long ago i saw one in use, Barbados West Indies. Shop owner, Mr. Springer, said it makes richer gas than what ya get from a cylinder. It was all he used, and those guys can fix things that we discard.

Thanks for the great walk-thru. I just interviewed a 102 yo lady for my podcast and she mentioned the use of a carbide. I feel less ignorant and glad she made it to 102 despite the carbide!!

Wish I had one. The last time I filled my acetylene bottle, it cost me $300. Thanks for the video, I love your channel.

When I was a wee larvae in the late 60's I remember my dad making these special balloons. They consisted of a large black plastic bag filled with Acetylene, and a long piece of fuse. This activity was carried out at the grand parents property way out in the coast range mountains of Oregon. When that fuse ran up to the balloon it set off an explosion that was literally earth shaking, with a giant mushroom fireball that rolled, and rolled. To this day I do not think I have ever heard anything as spectacularly loud as dads special balloons : D

Saw a short where a guy was welding with a five gallon version of this with no valves aside from the torch. He opened it up and splashed a two fist size chunks of carbide in and then bolted the lid on. I just came here because I didn’t know carbide was used for that. Neat to learn stuff like this.

I used carbide lamps while caving back in the early 70's. The helmet had a compartment that held the carbide and water dripped into the compartment and generated acetylene gas that came out a small hole under pressure that burned and produced the light.

Thanks for the history lesson! Never seen one before, would be mighty nervous to actually use it! Glad the technology has advanced from this.

Knowing that it can't handle pressure well, makes this look scarey. Scarey blowing up robot thing. But other than that, if it's not used for what it was made for, neato. Yay scrap
