Don't mention it. These guys can definitely require a lot of attention especially when it comes to both light and humidity. It can be a bit much but once spring hits and those catkins come into bloom, it is definitely all worth it. If you can put up with their fussiness and manage to prune them avidly they make a nice bonsai specimen.

Sadly, you can't really start these from from cuttings as they are grafted on to rootstock. I don't know what the pussy Willow word stock will look like, whether it will be strong enough or not. Whatever. Go for it!

They're fairly unique bonsais to have. They do like water but too much can drown em. They can be pretty fussy too when it comes to light and food ad well! Let me know if you have any questions about em!

In wondering the same thing. Mine is growing huge green branches that are about 9 inches long now and I cant find anything online saying whether to let them grow or cut them off so I keep letting it grow and waiting to find info 😕 I'm also curious if it can be planted outside.

So I had this same problem. I know they like a decent amount of water, so I had to adjust my watering schedule just a little. On hot enough days (days over 100°) it wasn't uncommon for me to water him three times that day. What I ended up doing was pruning back the dead leaves pretty aggressively. I think he had maybe three good leaves left once I finished. He bounced back but it was a little rough. You have to be careful though because they like ok light, and if you prune them back liberally they don't have the leaves to photosynthesize and make food. This can stress them out and potentially kill them with too much light.

Typically all willows like to be around a lot of water i.e. ponds, lakes, and rivers. However if you have the same one that I did in the video they are a smaller sized tree and could drown fairly easily. If you do try and mound up the soil as best as you can to try and keep your tree more up on a hill.

I really don't know an exact amount but substrate that has about 30 to 40% clay in it makes for healthy loamy soil. When in pots though I'd stay closer to 30%. And yes I do mix some clay in with some of my substrate for my clay loving plants.

They drop and leaves form.

I know, this tree is very unique (with it's foliage) and just sleek and all around pretty. With bonsai, it can be tricky. Never forget that you are dealing with trees, grafted so they probably have a little bit of wild in them. I don't mean like an animal but they have been used to being wild for hundreds of thousands (probably millions) of years. Some trees do just fine confined in a container and receiving dappled light and some (even the exact same species) just wither up and die. The very definition of bonsai is keeping these (even wild) trees small. You can leave your tree in a pot, just about forever, but there will be a little bit of maintenance to ensure it stays alive and well and small. Not only do you need to prune the tree above the soil but below it too. If you keep a tree in a small pot for several years the roots will grow and wrap around the pot several times and could end up killing the tree. I had a bonsai, a trident maple, a tree that is very popular with bonsai. I had it about 2 almost 3 years when it started losing leaves. I tried everything to try and keep it alive. One day I planted it in my side yard with intentions of fattening the trunk up. Its been about a year and leaves are already coming in this spring. My point is you can do either, but in a pot it may take a little up keep to keep it happy. As far as not knowing where your pipes are I would suggest calling your local agriculture board or 411 to have someone come out and identify where they all are if you do plan to plant it. The roots can take off and really cause damage if you aren't for sure.

Nope you did just fine. Pruning is a great way to make just about any tree "bush" out. I took mine out of its pot and placed it in the ground to help thicken up its trunk. As long as you see new growth and new blooms your plant is doing just fine. They don't put out new blooms if they aren't happy and healthy. Truth be told these aren't the best trees for bonsai. It can be done, but they are very particular about their light, water and humidity, more so than the average person can provide. However it seems like you are doing just fine. Let me know if you end up having anymore questions.

Don't give up on it yet. I can't tell you how many trees I've had that I would have sworn we're long dead, and a month or two later I see one leaf pop out. Now, I can tell you nothing produces green leaves quicker than actual sunlight. Can you sit him outside? Grow lights can sometimes do it in a pinch but for trees, you need great grow lights. I use spider farmer LEDS that I get off Amazon, and those will only get a tree so far. Trees should always be outside, they're trees and they typically need a bunch of light. Obviously, I don't mean your tropicals need to be out during the winter if you live up north. If you are able to you should sit him outdoors. Now, trees need an established cuticle (the covering over the entire plant that protects it from the environment and especially direct sunlight). Until the cuticle is well established you need to keep him in partial shade until you do see new growth. I'm talking very bright shade. If you throw him directly in the sunlight for a while you'll kill any bit of life he has in him. He's very stressed and you don't want to stress him any further. I ended up putting it outside in a large pot and it survived -15F this winter.

Yeah so if you notice the pots they put those trees in are tiny. Also the substrate isn't meant to feed them well or even have much nutriental value at all. It's mainly there to help keep the plant upright. Unfortunately by the time we get them they don't have much in their systems and they've sat in stores or just out of the sunlight for God knows how long. What you should do is get a good sized pot at least 8 or a 10 in pot. Get some good reputable substrate that you like or ones meant for bonsai trees. They really enjoy a decent amount of water so get a substrate that drains well too. A lot of people think that putting rocks in the bottom of the container can help with drainage too. I dont agree with that. If you do that the rocks will cause the soil to clump up and coagulate in the bottom of the pot thereby impeding the water from flowing out freely. If you want to add something to help with drainage then make sure you add in pumice, builders sand or perlite. When you go to repot it make sure you trim back the roots some too to give your plant plenty of room to stretch out and grow. As a general rule of thumb you can remove about three quarters of a plants roots without hurting them. Make sure you sanitize your tools before you cut on the tree. Now I say all this but if you look these plants up on the internet there arent a ton of pitchers of them as potted plants. Reason being is they aren't the best trees to be in a pot. I actually put mine in the yard to help it thicken up its trunk and put on some mass. As I said earlier they do enjoy a good amount of water and humidity. Typically they'll get more of this outside because in our homes especially during the winter we keep them hot and bone dry. This in turn dries them out fairly quickly. Now you have to be careful because most people see all this and they try to over compensate with fertilizer. They do well with fertilizers like bone meal and fish emulsion. Now if outside they rarely need to be fed but indoors they need to be fed at least every other month or so. Now if you repot yours don't feed it for a little bit. Most substrates will feed for a couple of months. If you get in a pinch all purpose well balanced fertilizers work well too. Just don't go overboard because too much fert will cause salts to build up and choke out your tree. Now with light they do enjoy full sun and they won't get that indoors. I'd say they need about 5 or 6 hours of direct sunlight. You need to introduce them into the sunlight slowly cause you can fry up those tiny leaves. I'd say the reason the branches are doing this is due to the lack of humidity/water and the right amount of light. Let me know if you have anymore questions or concerns.

Depending on location and nutrients and environment it could get to 6ft maybe 7 ft if conditions are right. They can have up to a 8 foot spread. I think they can live for about half a century too. In fact, planting outside is the best way to thicken up your trunk too.

It will be next to our lake, nice and moist, in full sunshine. We plan to build a wire cage around it, as we have a resident Beaver, who ate the last tree I planted!! Thank you again!
