Purchased this last year and my husband has kept it indoors till early summer. It is much happier outside in the sun. Last spring, my husband pruned it to a few inches from the center top. Turned out to be successful. We were not expecting it to have lasted as long as it has. This year, I am pruning the same way but about an inch or two further. Additional work this year is the root prune. I am finding most of my container plants loose their vigor when root bound. An expert in keeping container roses has demonstrated the cutting of the bottom layer. I am betting that this will work for other container plants. Taking a risk! No expert here but trying to make things work.

Can you show the results from regrowth. This is my first year with this tree and I'm terrified it will lose its weep of I cut it too far back as directed from multiple sources.

Good question. I know there is not much info out there when we first purchased this so I have posted plenty. This video you watched was made in April 2022. This is a full year cycle. I just pruned again for 2023 but I am trying to have it grow upward a bit so slightly different. I do not what the result may look like. Important: lots of sun and water; repot and fertilize after pruning. Good luck 😊 Hope this helps! Instructions that came w the plant sat the same...but i am so afraid 😨 ive watched other bonsai videos. I have floral wire and rather than prune off, I have wired down the new growth to begin training. I think i will purchase a 2nd one and try pruning it to compare the difference in growth

I did this and my husband said I had murdered the tree!

Sure it looks very drastic. Last year, the staff at the garden center where we purchased this from advised to prune to 2 inches. My husband left 5” last year. I am averaging 3” this year. Good luck to both of us! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 I am seeing some growth now and will post on my Community page once there is more action. Thank you for your comment. Have a good weekend!

Can this be planted in the ground?

Yes, There are 2 of them planted in ground in my neighborhood. A viewer has warned me that the roots can go far from the trunk and do damage of planted close to house or pipes. Thanks for the question.

What kind of knife is that?

A kitchen salad knife. Any knife would do for that matter. I just happen to have this around. I also use a steak knife at times. Any surplus from the kitchen. 😉

I live in Ontario, CA and just purchased ( I think rescued) a weeping pussywillow. I've pruned it back like the video, transplanted it after opening up the root ball and added miracle grow and new soil, my question is should it be brought in the house for the winter, plant it in the ground or keep it in its container and leave it outside?

Last year, mine stayed outdoors close to the fence (like towards the end of the video) throughout the whole winter. Our average low is minus 12C but lowest for last year reached minus 20C for a few days. However, mine had the whole summer to settle and grow out. Did you just prune it back? If you did, I would keep it outside very close to the house if the temperature is above minus 10C. Any lower than that, I would keep it in an unheated garage for the winter. Good luck!

@@GardenNotes Thanks so much. I just bought one of these a few weeks ago. It’s about done with the catkins. It has tons of new leaves/stems .. it’s wonderful. (Pussy Willow is a favorite from childhood) I live in Utah - high desert w/ cold winters HOT summers - I am hoping to keep it alive!! Just searching for direction.

@@jeannemarie5908 I know how it feels. When we first purchased this, we could not find a info/help online beyond the first bloom. I was so sure that I would not survive more than a year. Here it is going into its third blooms. The first year we purchased, my husband left about 5 inches from where branches divided. The past year (second year) I left only 3 inches plus I removed a lot of thin branches. Looking at it right now, I will leave more on top and less on the bottom when the catkins are done. Hope this information will fit your weather environment. I am in zone 7 west coast Canada. It likes a lot of water so keep it moist at all time. I do not have a drip system. It started dying while I was away for a week on vacation in June last year. Good luck 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

@@GardenNotes I have it in the house right now. I water it EVERY DAY!! I have it in a south facing window and it is VERY HAPPY!! It’s snowing out side, but it is 60-72 degrees in the house. :) I will cut it back next month .. I have to keep watching your videos and letting the information sink in! It’s been such a delight to watch it bloom and grow! It makes me happy! Now, if I can keep it alive for a few years .. I will be over the moon.
