I met Carl Perkins in 1989 and I have never met a more humble and kind human . I spent forty fives minute talking with him and he really enlightened me in ways that still have a profound effect on the way I look at life . God bless him heart .

I met Carl in Port Huron Michigan in 1977. We talked for about 40 minutes in between sets about his music. He had always been my favorite musician.

Everything he says is beautiful. His childhood was a competely different time and whether or not Carl Perkins gets the recognition he deserves, he made it from a sharecroppers son to a rock n roll legend ! Beautiful interview

Carl Perkins had a modest background but I suspect that made him the humble, genuine, decent human being he was. He was also blessed with natural talent.

One of the architects of great music, including the Beatles themselves owe much to this fine southern gentleman here! I wish we had these type of people in music today, they were such role models!

Absolutely. George tried to copy his style and Paul loved him like an older brother. Paul sent him a plane ticket to a vacation he was taking his family to in the Caribbean. Carl wrote a song for him called "My Old Friend."

Loved his music, I grew up listening to him, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran they were the first ROCK N ROLL guys and they were great. Then Elvis came along and they were kind of over shadowed by Elvis, but their talent was just as good abd sometimes better, but Elvus had good promoters. These guys were lots if talent and I bought there 45 records because that's how we played their music which was the way we bought music then. I loved the music.

Never forget that day when I met Carl Perkins and sat chatting with him for 3 hrs. LOVE HIM. This was back in 1986 i Denmark.

yes CARL PERKINS was a great guy - a wonderful man - I met him also - in 1977 at his show at the Whiskey a go go on Sunset boulevard in West Hollywood , California - and then again sometime in 1996 at a New York City club - HE had not at all changed a drop - HE was as humble as could be , Joe Nania a.k.a. I always loved Carl Perkins. And,he was humble....not arrogant about his fame. Having a friend to encourage you....that's so awesome.

Carl Perkins had a lake house close to where I live, and he came in my work place on two or three occasions. Once came in wearing a cap, and it was obvious he wasn't wearing his hairpiece. I cringed when an old gentleman walked up to CP and told him, " pull off that cap and let me see that bald head ! " CP just pulled off his cap, bent over, and said "there it is! " From their conversation it was obvious CP didn't know who the man until he explained their connection, but I think that says a ton about how down to earth he really was.

And I've noticed he allowed his hairpiece to grow gray when he could have hung onto youth. I've seen older pictures with a black hairpiece, and he was handsomer as he let it grow gray, imho.

I watched Tom almost every night I watched this show. The only thing I can say is CARL PERKINS WAS A HERO TO ME. I'M FROM A SMALL TOWN IN IOWA VAIL IOWA AND WE LISTENED TO THE EVERLY BROTHERS FROM SHENANDOAH IOWA 25 MILES FROM VAIL IOWA MY MOM'S LITTLE BROTHER AND HIS FRIENDS TAUGHT ME ABOUT MUSIC 🎵 I STARTED PLAYING GUITAR WHEN I WAS 4 YEARS OLD. CARL PERKINS WAS EVERYONE'S FAVORITE MUSICIAN GOD BLESS CARL PERKINS AND THE EVERLY BROTHERS MY FIRST INFLUENCE IN MUSIC.

How cool to see this interview with one of my guitar heroes. A humble man but one of the greats from the beginning. Maybe he wasn't as good looking as Elvis (who I also love) but Carl could pick that guitar and wrote a slug of classic songs. Wish I could have met you, Carl.

Such a humble, salt-of-the-earth kind of man. According to Wikipedia, Elvis traveled to Jackson to hear Carl and his brothers do their thing at a tavern called El Rancho. Apparently this was before Elvis had any degree of success.

Yes, if you read the book, Go Cat Go written by Carl, he tells the story of how Elvis used to apply eye linner around his eyes.

Carl did wear a hairpiece a I don't blame him. He had to look hip in 1956 so what do you expect. He always had bad looking teeth so he was fitted with Caps or Vaneers in the 70s so he could smile with confidence. In any event he was a great guitar player and song writer and that's what really counts. He'd still be around if he did not smoke and drink so much. He was only 65 when he died and that's way to young!

Lawd .... What has happened to music? A soft spoken, country gentleman with more talent in one finger than a pascal of “modern” country performers. I thank the Lawd I was raised listening to Rock a Billy... I will die listening to it. How I miss this man🎶🎵

This young man grew up playing and singing on our local live radio broadcast in wheeling WV. He was raised with his family and 4 miles down the road in a middle class working family. A little better life than Carl did but lower middle class was blue collar. He did good for himself. I'm a straight guy, but I don't mind saying that I always thought Elvis had knockout eyes. I mean I could see how his eyes were a part of what was making girls go crazy for him. I was jealous of him that he had a look like that that could make girls so daffy for him. It never occurred to me that he was using makeup to do that. Damn. Maybe I should buy some mascara and give it a shot myself. Dye my hair black too while I'm at it.

In North central Texas in the 40-50s My Dads folks were poor oilfield country folks pic'd ccotton after school eat in corn bread and milk the culture was country. When they seen Elvis on rich folks TV, they couldn't stand him So country Carl Perkins was the Elvis By southern Folks Its Carl still is and always will be

His father bought him a used guitar for 3 bucks and a chicken, that'd have been in the early 40s, equal to about 50 bucks now. As Carl says they were 12.95 mail order so just over 200 bucks new in today's money for what he called a cheap acoustic guitar. No idea what a chicken is worth today, but his old man was ripped off for what he paid for a beaten up old cheap 6 string acoustic gee tar

Your comment makes no sense. Carl never had an easy life. He went through a lot of pain and struggles most of his life.

I think you need to read up on Carl Perkins a little more before you make any more comments because you have said some things here that are not correct. You said none of the other songs he wrote ever became hits. Well Carl wrote the song Daddy Sang Bass in 1968. Johnny Cash recorded it and it spent 6-weeks at number-1 on the country charts. He wrote So Wrong for Patsy Cline in 1962 and it got to number 14 on the country charts. He wrote and recorded Restless in 1969 and it got to number 20 on the country charts. Those are three examples of top 20 hits right there. If your song gets into the top 20 I think you could consider it a hit. The Beatles recorded Matchbox in 1964 and it got to number 17 on Billboards Hot 100 pop charts. He wrote Silver and Gold for Dolly Parton and it got to number 15 on the Country charts in 1991. Carl's single (version) of Blue Suede Shoes sold lots more copies then Elvis's version. 2-Million plus. So like I said go back and read up some more on Carl's recording history. His book (bio) called Go Cat Go would be a good start.

I lose interest in a interview with a performer who was involved in rock-a-billy and does recognize the originator of this kind of music(ie-Bill Haley). They have now evidence that Haley was recording rock-a-billy as far back has '48. I am sure Carl was fully aware of this.

Haley's voice was well suited for the typed of music he specialized in. Haley may not have had the looks but had a great ear for the music and a one of the best Rock and Roll band behind him.

+glen cooper Plus Carl wrote all (or most of) his songs, and when his career was thought to be over, Johnny Cash gave him a second career as a member of his touring band

Carl Perkins was losing his hair back in 1956, Artists from those days aren't much different than today, Flash clothes, wigs, teeth fixed, makeup etc. Elvis was going bald by 1960, his daughter explained it was something to do with medication he was using " Still embarrassed about it so had to make up some crackpot excuse" instead of just saying he was going bald and wore a wig.
