Carmageddon was never an arcade game. It was a PC game, and it was awesome. It isn't a racing game, it's a demolition derby/vehicular manslaughter game with the option of treating it like a race if you really want to. I have never played the N64 port, but from what I have heard, everyone that has complained about it was playing it as a racing title, not the carnage-fest the PC original was. While I imagine the N64 port is actually terrible, I recommend that you try the PC game. The controls may still a bit wonky, but it is a lot of fun to play.

About the respawn and repair mechanics: I believe those are actually normal mechanics in Carmageddon. Granted, my only experience with the series is with Max Damage (which is the newest game in the series), but it's also got the respawn and repair features.

Carmageddon 64 is technically a port of Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse now, if you couldn't already tell by the inclusion of the Eagle 3, Beaver City, and other things. Pretty much all the console ports were ports of Carmageddon 2 but for some reason were named after the first game.

The game is actually a port of Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now. The game was originally developed by Stainless Studios and the port was developed by Software Creations (the developer of Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage).

you know, the pc version of this game got good reviews while the 64 version sucked. and there were sequels to this and the pc was the best of it.

If the turning is that sensitive, then I can only imagine trying to play this with my own N64 controller (which has a Gamecube-like stick installed, and it's a bit more sensitive than the regular stick).

Unfortunate, really. At least the recent release (re-release with a lot of added stuff, really) of Carmageddon: Max Damage worked out fine. Try that out, you might have fun with it.

Big Rigs?

I remember seeing this game on a list done by a user I watch quite a bit. The list was The Top 20 Worst Games of All Time, obviously from the point of view of the list's creator. This game beat out Sonic 06, Parasite Eve 3 (essentially the "Metroid Other M" of the Parasite Eve series), Superman 64, Friday the 13th, and another game done by Stellar Stone (same people who made Big Rigs), and was placed in the single-digit section of the list. He also gives out ratings for games that he reviews. Carmageddon 64 got a Bullshit rating, but you make it sounds like it deserves a Rest In Piss (pretty much the rating that a game does NOT want to get).

the city level background looks like pre 2001 New York city! talk about lame, you can see the twin towers easily. also, love your signing, always makes me laugh.

If it had racing AI then the other racers would just win the race whilst you were out killing zombies and wrecking other cars.

It's unfortunate that the console Carmageddon games are so terrible, because the PC games are actually pretty good. Have you ever played the PC games? I think the biggest mistake they made with this version is making it so that hitting pedestrians (err, zombies but whatever) makes you take damage. That right there ruins one of the main elements of the game. You're supposed to be able to gleefully mow down hapless pedestrians and fill up your timer so that you can explore the map and battle with the other racers. Another thing they got wrong with this version are the physics; half the fun of Carma, I find comes from going off jumps, flying through the air, driving on rooftops, and other such crazy shenanigans. It may look like a racing game, but it's really supposed to be more of a violent physics sandbox.

Hey I think I know what the credits are for. You stated it was a port of an arcade game so if you put lets say a dollar you get 10,000 credits and you used them for repairing you car.

LMAO!! This was probably your best review yet. I missed out on this shitfest, but it amazes me how many shit games were actually on the N64. I know back then, you could rent a game for five days and if you didn't like it, all you missed out on was $5, though you were kinda stuck with a shit game for 5 days. It boiled down to games that were shit back then didn't really steal money, but they made a huge impact. It seems like some of LJN's employees defected to Titus and created this crap and Superman 64. And AY MADON!! That story! The story on this game is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. It looks like someone made a last ditch effort to create some semblance of a story in a short amount of time. Wow lets put a brutally violent racing game on a console that was seen as a kid's console, hand it to one of the worst companies of all time and change the people to zombies. That is the ultimate recipe for failure.
