Great performance, much feeling and much Lester Young presence.

The "Lester Young personce" comes from Carmen scatting the last phrase of Lester Young's 1943 record of "Sometimes I'm Happy" as her finale. She did the same thing on her 1965 album "Live and Wailing," which also contains the very best version of Anthony Newley's "Feelin' Good" (Nina Simone's record is great as far as she's concerned, but the awful arrangement she got from Hal Mooney belonged in a strip club).

What a class act ! Brilliant scatting as always by Ms McRae and Dave Young really tore the strings out of that bass !

What do you think jazz is? If anything, it’s improvising on the spot, changing the metre and melody as the moment and your collaborators strike you. Carmen Mcrae was a master of the form and substance of the music she chose to perform.

@ Kerry Lee Hunt While I prefer Carmen's version on her album ALIVE, it's unbelievable to see Oscar Peterson and Dave Young accompany her. Saw Dave many times at the Rex pre Covid-19 :)

Also, that's Louie Bellson on drums not Martin Drew.

@@paulmitchellbrown2153 That bass player is incredible! Whoever he is, he sounds a lot like Ray Brown, the bass giant who played with Peterson for 15 years.

He's not Martin Drew on drums!

If you transcribe what she's singing it isn't the melody at all. Singers think they can do whatever they want...and in the presence of Oscar Peterson? Shameless
