But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
Doesn't help to know you're so far away

My wife and I were going through a difficult time. I was going to leave her. We told our kids and they were upset. Next day I got home after work and she played this song. I realized then how much I loved her and how much she loved me. That was 24 years ago. We've now been married for 44 years. This song saved my life.

I sure do miss those days! Now someone like Jimmy Hendrix would be called an Uncle Tom from one side and a wanna be white boy by the other side. It’s pathetic! I miss the days when we all listened to a lot of the same music and talked about the same things. Life was so much simpler then. And … peaceful!

I am a white woman age 69. I agree. Where I grew up there was a dance hall that had bands every Friday and Saturday night where we all went to hear music and especially dance. We were a mixed breed of young people just wanting to go out and have fun. Blacks and whites together. I blame politics for the division in our country today. They are trying to divide us and they are succeeding. At this rate America doesn't stand a chance.

1971, married at 16, and him 17. Lived in a travel trailer near Fort Brag. Dancing in that little home for two. Laughing and playing constantly..... but that's what teenagers do, right? This song takes me back that place where we laughed and loved. We had three beautiful children and seven grandchildren. We divorced and cancer took my first love in 2000. But I like going back to that place in time when we only knew of laughter and love. So Far Away.

My wife recently passed from Pancreatic cancer, this was her favorite song and we played it at her funeral mass. She was actually friends with Carole King, they would do Zoom calls together. A couple of years ago Carole reached out to my wife on Zoom for her birthday and sang her Happy Birthday. It was during that call that my wife told Carole this was her favorite song. Carole replied that she wrote this while she was on the road missing her kids. To end my eulogy, I told the congergation that each time they prayed for my wife, they would see her face at their door.🙏

My dad passed of the big C. I cared for Jim, commuting every weekend but he didn't want to hear any of the music he had loved. He wanted a "smooth transition ". I wore earbuds listening to all his favorites, remembering fhe hood times so I could do what needed to be done. I know your pain. I can say I don't believe, I KNOW we will see each other again. @@highstrangeness1824 I couldn't agree more. My wife gerw up in the projects of the South Bronx and worked hard to make a good life for herself. Her two missions in life was providing a future for special needs chiledren (we have two) and caring for abused pets. I also siad in my eulogy that cancer may have taken her physical presence but could never kill her spirit. We had a wonderful 40 years together, I was fortunate she chose me for her husband.

The 70's was just before music companies got more conservative and commercial with popular music. It was a time of truly being more open to different types of music with less rules. I think it warms the soul because the spirit of those songs still remains. Blessings to you.

Do you really think that? There were also many in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and 1960s (including Carole King). The difference is that they learned to play classical music on an instrument. They did not simply write some lyrics and program a keyboard, and find a producer to clean up the mess, which is what they do now.

My grandpa passed away recently. I visited his grave this morning with my family. I’m sleeping next to my grandma and I can’t hold my tears, because I don’t live here anymore, in this city. I only got 2 weeks left being here then I have to go back. I don’t know this was part of the deal of growing up and aging, learning to face changes in our lives. My sister-in-law died last week from cancer. She was sixty-seven. Her youngest child sang the first lines of this song at her funeral. My wife and I watched it streamed from Nevada since our health prevents us from traveling. I cried as he sang. I felt the trembles of his grief. I heard the strength of his love for her, staggering with the reality that she is now physically so far away.

1974 , in high school, had to give a speech in English class on a person we admired. I was terrified of public speaking. I did it on Carole King and Gerry Goffin and the amazing music they had created. Then I played this song. I got an A.

Sorry for your loss. Its definitely a particular pain that certain songs can bring about. I was the same when I lost my Father. I could go on, smile when need be, and move through the motions - and then I'd hear anything from any rock band I grew up on (such as Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Old Genesis, Old Journey, well...basically anything and everything from the 60s on!) - and it was like taking a bullet. I could actually be at a store or at a gathering and for a minute or two forget and then BAM! A song would play and I was instantly brought back to my pain and knowing I could never again see him enjoying the music with me. For close to a year I couldn't listen to much at all. I drove without the radio even on in my car because I didn't want to take the chance of hearing something I didn't want to hear. That was 18 years ago now and it has gotten less painful, but it's still there. I jam Zeppelin now and still feel pain for what I won't have with him again, but I do atleast now smile - knowing I was lucky to have had him at all and have those memories. ❤

I'm so sorry for your loss and the pain it brings. There's no quick fix when everything gets broken, my friend, but maybe try talking to people who knew your wife well: mutual friends, other family members, her work colleagues, etc, rather than keeping everything inside. If this isn't possible, seek out a bereavement counsellor near you and sign up for some sessions. This can often be a great help when the feelings of loss are so raw. You don't say if you had children together - if you did, recognise that your wife lives on in them, and you will continue to see and hear her in the way they tilt their heads or sneeze or laugh or sing or carry out a particular task. If you don't have children, it might be worth getting involved in something that relates in some way to your wife's death: if she died due to a particular disease/illness, try raising funds for a relevant charity that increases public awareness/funds research into treatments, cures, etc. If her death was due to an accident, get involved in a campaign that seeks to promote awareness. If one doesn't exist, start one. Find others who've experienced similar losses and draw strength from them. At the time I'm writing this it will be a year or so since you lost your wife, and you could use your experience to help others who've had a more recent loss. Most of all, focus on the 20 years that you and your wife had together rather than dwelling on her absence in the present, and value the things you did together. The poet, Philip Larkin, once wrote a poem ('An Arundel Tomb', if you want to look it up) that ends with the line 'What will survive of us is love.' As I've aged and lost people close to me, I've come to realise the truth of that: you are shaped by the love of those who loved you, and your love for others shapes them. Your wife's love for you has helped shape you as a human being, so in a profound sense, she survives in you, too. Without her love you would not be who you are, so in a sense you and she are still one. I hope that a year on you're beginning to see some chinks of light in your darkness. If not, don't worry - they will come eventually. All good wishes.

This song popped into my head this morning, and I instantly started crying. The lyrics that really get me emotional are: Long ago I reached for you And there you stood Holding you again Could only do me good How I wish I could But you're so far away. I lost my mom to dementia back in January, and these lyrics make me think of her. Once you lose such an important person in your life, your life is never the same ever again. The heartache, missing the person and sadness never ever truly go away. You just kind of have to try to go on in your life without them, but it is never easy. RIP, mom! I will never stop loving or missing you.

I heard this song for the first time with my brother in Hawaii at july 1975, when we were took in the family of the persons who, later, adopted my brother legally. Every night we were listening to this song with tears, thinking of our parents and siblings we left behind in Viêt Nam while we were running out of the country as boat people at the communists’s invasion a couple of months before . The pain of losing our family, our friends, our country was so great that we could hardly hold back our tears while hearing this song. Since then, we've well integrated -me in France and my brother in the United States-and our family succeeded thank God, to leave Vietnam and come and live in France, but every time I listen to this song, my heart tightens thinking of that painful time. It's such a so beautiful, meaningful song and Carol King’s voice seems go through listener’s soul and heart. Thank you, Carol 🙏❤️.

What a coincidence to your experience. Unfortunately, two years later I lost my beautiful mother tragically. My brother was 12 and I just 13 years of age. Our hearts were shattered and have been broken since. But I every time I hear any songs from Carole King’s Great album “Tapestry” it brings back fond memories of my beautiful mother singing to us and taking me by the hand to the middle of our living room and dance with her...she’d dance with my brother as well. I thank God every day for the beautiful time we were blessed to share those amazing special moments with her before her life was cut short at the young age of 32 yrs of age. YOU ARE ALWAYS DEEPLY MISSED MOM 😪😪😪 I LOVE YOU and PRAY THAT WE MEET UP ONCE AGAIN TO DANCE AND EMBRACE ONE ANOTHER PICK UP WHERE WE LEFT OFF. 🙏🏼 ♥️🙏🏼

So far away Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more? It would be so fine to see your face at my door It doesn't help to know you're just time away Long ago I reached for you and there you stood Holding you again could only do me good Oh how I wish I could but you're so far away One more song about moving along the highway Can't say much of anything that's new If I could only work this life out my way I'd rather spend it being close to you But you're so far away Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more? It would be so fine to see your face at my door It doesn't help to know you're so far away Yeah yeah so far away Traveling around sure gets me down and lonely Nothing else to do but close my mind I sure hope the road don't come to own me There's so many dreams I've yet to find But you're so far away Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more? It would be so fine to see your face at my door And it doesn't help to know you're so far away Yeah yeah so far away, yeh, you're so far away

dtorres1104 Songs just aren't written the same as where in the last century. Imagine a time when you hear a new song on the radio, it's first play on air. When you heard that song and listened it would touch some part of you that brought upon a pleasant feeling. Sadly, those days are gone. Today's music is directed in a completely different manner all together.

The older you get, the more you romanticise and idealise the past. There's so much great music being made today, perhaps as much as ever before, because there are far more mediums. People forget, a lot of junk was also released in the past, especially the 70s.

It's so funny a few months ago my veterinarian & I were on the phone chatting about bringing my cat Princess in for an appointment earlier as she was doing chemo (she passed on 1.28.2024), but my vet said "Princess is schedule a bit far out. Then she broke into Carole King "so far away" . Then I said "OMG you like Carole King?" She said "Yeah, she's like a category all her own. if you don't like Carole King there's something wrong with you." My vet is awesome and I never noticed the cover photo for her album included her cat. I love this!

I lost my husband in 2019 to pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer and this song makes me think of him and how much I miss him and just want to hold him again. When I was around him I felt like all my problems would just disappear. Since then I've been stuck in a depressive burned out rut. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever get out of it. I also understand that there's worse places I could be in right now so I'm happy for that.
