My dad passed of the big C. I cared for Jim, commuting every weekend but he didn't want to hear any of the music he had loved. He wanted a "smooth transition ". I wore earbuds listening to all his favorites, remembering fhe hood times so I could do what needed to be done. I know your pain. I can say I don't believe, I KNOW we will see each other again. Her two missions in life was providing a future for special needs chiledren (we have two) and caring for abused pets. I also siad in my eulogy that cancer may have taken her physical presence but could never kill her spirit. We had a wonderful 40 years together, I was fortunate she chose me for her husband.

It was my parents' decade. They were a different class of people back then. Music could steal the warmth of the sun or the crispness of winter winds. People believed in themselves back then. All I can do in today's bizarre world is pay that forward.

The 70's was just before music companies got more conservative and commercial with popular music. It was a time of truly being more open to different types of music with less rules. I think it warms the soul because the spirit of those songs still remains. Blessings to you.

Not to take away from the phenomenal song writing ability of Carole King, but there are plenty of great songwriters out there. Stay away from commercial radio and start searching - you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you find.

Do you really think that? There were also many in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and 1960s (including Carole King). The difference is that they learned to play classical music on an instrument. They did not simply write some lyrics and program a keyboard, and find a producer to clean up the mess, which is what they do now.

Sorry for your loss. Its definitely a particular pain that certain songs can bring about. I was the same when I lost my Father. I could go on, smile when need be, and move through the motions - and then I'd hear anything from any rock band I grew up on (such as Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Old Genesis, Old Journey, well...basically anything and everything from the 60s on!) - and it was like taking a bullet. I could actually be at a store or at a gathering and for a minute or two forget and then BAM! A song would play and I was instantly brought back to my pain and knowing I could never again see him enjoying the music with me. For close to a year I couldn't listen to much at all. I drove without the radio even on in my car because I didn't want to take the chance of hearing something I didn't want to hear. That was 18 years ago now and it has gotten less painful, but it's still there. I jam Zeppelin now and still feel pain for what I won't have with him again, but I do atleast now smile - knowing I was lucky to have had him at all and have those memories. ❤

I'm so sorry for your loss and the pain it brings. There's no quick fix when everything gets broken, my friend, but maybe try talking to people who knew your wife well: mutual friends, other family members, her work colleagues, etc, rather than keeping everything inside. If this isn't possible, seek out a bereavement counsellor near you and sign up for some sessions. This can often be a great help when the feelings of loss are so raw. You don't say if you had children together - if you did, recognise that your wife lives on in them, and you will continue to see and hear her in the way they tilt their heads or sneeze or laugh or sing or carry out a particular task. If you don't have children, it might be worth getting involved in something that relates in some way to your wife's death: if she died due to a particular disease/illness, try raising funds for a relevant charity that increases public awareness/funds research into treatments, cures, etc. If her death was due to an accident, get involved in a campaign that seeks to promote awareness. If one doesn't exist, start one. Find others who've experienced similar losses and draw strength from them. At the time I'm writing this it will be a year or so since you lost your wife, and you could use your experience to help others who've had a more recent loss. Most of all, focus on the 20 years that you and your wife had together rather than dwelling on her absence in the present, and value the things you did together. The poet, Philip Larkin, once wrote a poem ('An Arundel Tomb', if you want to look it up) that ends with the line 'What will survive of us is love.' As I've aged and lost people close to me, I've come to realise the truth of that: you are shaped by the love of those who loved you, and your love for others shapes them. Your wife's love for you has helped shape you as a human being, so in a profound sense, she survives in you, too. Without her love you would not be who you are, so in a sense you and she are still one. I hope that a year on you're beginning to see some chinks of light in your darkness. If not, don't worry - they will come eventually. All good wishes.

I was in 5th grade and remember my beautiful mother “Adeline” bought this album on 8 track...she’d play it what seemed like every day while cleaning, cooking or rearranging the living room. What a coincidence to your experience. Unfortunately, two years later I lost my beautiful mother tragically. My brother was 12 and I just 13 years of age. Our hearts were shattered and have been broken since. But I every time I hear any songs from Carole King’s Great album “Tapestry” it brings back fond memories of my beautiful mother singing to us and taking me by the hand to the middle of our living room and dance with her...she’d dance with my brother as well. I thank God every day for the beautiful time we were blessed to share those amazing special moments with her before her life was cut short at the young age of 32 yrs of age. The older you get, the more you romanticise and idealise the past. There's so much great music being made today, perhaps as much as ever before, because there are far more mediums. People forget, a lot of junk was also released in the past, especially the 70s.
