Another great carving and video!! Thanks for sharing. I have one suggestion though. You might want to create an outline on your workbench with some tape or something that is the same size as your camera viewing frame. You have a tendency to pull your carving down and out of the camera frame.

Great video Kevin! I learn a lot from watching your videos. What kind of knife do you use? I'm always impressed by the amount of wood you remove so quickly with that rough out knife, it takes me forever to do that much
@KevinCoates986 жыл бұрын
Thanks Todd. The big knife is a fish fillet knife. The one I use for detail is a flexcut rough out knife. Removing the wood quickly like that takes some confidence for sure but that will come in time. When I started carving I was always afraid to cut too deep into the wood. You get use to it after awhile. Practice, practice, practice

Amazing work! I've tried for years to get a face 1/3 as good as your Santa's. I'm going to have to get a new hobby or start practicing more! That fishing knife must be incredibly sharp to remove that much stock and still score those crisp lines. If I may ask if you use sharpening stones and a strop or another method to sharpen with? Again awesome video and a great piece of work as the result.
@KevinCoates984 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jeff. Practice is what helps you get better. Mine wasn’t that great in the beginning. I still strive to do better. The knife is ok sharp. The wood I use is fairly soft and easy to cut. I don’t use anything fancy for sharpening. Go back through my videos and you’ll see one I have on sharpening

Kevin, do you suggest using fresh off the tree white pine or dried white pine? I watch you and Doug Outside and can never seem to get my knife super sharp like you guys. It seems like your knives go through the wood like butter. Is your knife an old filet knife? I am totally hooked on watching you and doug create such great artwork.

Tim, when I used balsam fir for carving I would carve it green. I can only get kiln dried white pine here where I live. It works fine for me. Sharpening a knife is much like carving. It takes practice. I use a fish knife most time. Thanks Tim

You have to use a strop with some compound on it. An old leather belt will work too, just put a polishing compound on it like a jeweler's rouge.

I was expecting something more exotic like a fishing shack or ships cabin. I guess weather does not discriminate it works the same in a lumber yard as it does on a fish shanty.;)

Great design. Excellent use of space and creative shaping on the beard, including the face. I really would appreciate a narrative. I would learn much from an understanding of why this cut versus that cut, and why you cut a shadow better this way as opposed to another way. Hope that makes sense. I love your work. Is white pine that easy to carve? The way you cut it seems smoother than basswood.
@KevinCoates985 жыл бұрын
Thanks Phillip. I’ve only used basswood a time or two. I find white pine fairly easy cutting. As for me commenting on what I’m doing, it will probably never happen. I’m not big on talking. I try the best I can to show what I’m doing in the videos. Hopefully that will get better in time too.

Kevin, your videos are very inspiring. I made a version of your large knife out of a steak knife. It works very well but I think it's only stainless steel. I'm going to the resale store somday to pick up an old Chicago cutlery fish fillet knife and try that. Is yours steal or stainless? Second question, could you create a video of a super super close-up of your eye-making process? Maybe along with the nose cheeks and mouth also. I'm looking around at your videos, maybe I can find one.
@KevinCoates985 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rob. Fish knife is good enough to cut fresh fish 🐟 then it should be good for soft wood. I don’t think it’s stainless. Looks like a little rust on it. I did one video on carving eyes, nose and mouth a few months ago. Don’t know if that one is any good to you. I think there’s one on carving an eye around that time too.
@robcaldwell5615 жыл бұрын
Ha ha, yes. Strong enough for a fish, made for a block of wood. I agree I think it is steel. And I did find some close-ups of yours for the eyes. Thanks for getting back to me. Your carvings are really great.
