I’ve been using the Apple Vision Pro for over a month now and I finally feel ready to share my full review from the perspective of a fervent VR user (or you may call me an addict :P).
► Meta Quest 2 on NewEgg (25% off): howl.me/clXeIib8W4g
► PlayStation Pulse Explore on NewEgg (14% off): howl.me/clXeKH90T2X
► MSI RTX 4090 GPU on NewEgg (11% off): howl.me/clXeLfhItPv
I bought the headset myself which has only cost me five kidneys... ;) but since then I've been on a non-stop expedition into the unknown territories of Apple's first XR headset. So I'll be sharing the usual techy stuff, visual quality, overall performance, However, I’ll primarily be focusing on the experience, the stuff you can do, and what has surprised me, both good and bad, because I think that’s the most interesting part of a VR headset review. If you stick around until the end, I’ll let you know if I’m keeping my headset.
Happy April Fool's Day and enjoy the NewEgg sale!

It feels like a great device somewhat hampered by being stuck in the Apple ecosystem. Like you say, you want to use it with your gaming PC for editing... But you can't. You want to use two or more Mac screens, but you can't. You want to use VR but they stick you to one spot and forcing Steam VR integration with controllers is painful. You maybe want to use other apps, but you are stuck with iPad ones. You want to use your own peripherals, but you are stuck using the expensive apple ones they want you to buy. Shrug! I guess that is the price you pay for the cool integration across apple applications. But is only for people who are dyed-in-the-wool apple already. I don't see there being a lot of non-apple people being dragged into VR and switching to all apple devices with this device. Which is a bit of a shame. Will it go the same way as other enterprise niche products like Xtal, varjo XR3 etc. or will those products get across OS integrations in windows / linux / steamOS? off the back of Apple showing how it can be done? Also has Vision Pro seen a European release yet?

I am really appreciating the longer use reviews. This review was well worth the time and effort you put into it. I am 6 months in with my Quest 3 and have found myself using it more and more as I gain a higher level of comfort with both productivity applications and as a day to day tool and am starting to play with Immersed - not to mention the more comfortable feel of the headset and much better optics. I combine the Quest 3 with BoboVR's S3 strap and really love it without the face gasket. I have been having a great time with From Other Suns lately. It makes me want the visual fidelity of the AVP, but I am content with the screens and displays at the price point. I am thinking my next headset might have to wait for the Valve Deckard - which I am thinking will be an automatic purchase.

I did go to an Apple store and demo it. The eye/hand tracking and visual fidelity are exceptional. However, as an Android phone , Windows PC user, and gamer, I would not get full use from the headset. Then there was the weight and how much of a relief I felt to be able to take it off (solo knit band). I doubt Apple will ever make a headset for individuals like me, as I will never give up the freedom of Android and the gaming chops of a Window's PC, to limit myself to just Apple's ecosystem. But I do appreciate that Apple released a headset. It lends real legitimacy to VR as a platform and I can't wait to see what Meta and other VR manufacturers bring out to compete with it.

Considering the cost of the Vision Pro, the extended review is truly appreciated! Would I buy the Vision Pro? Nah, can't afford it. Would I love to have it if it was close to a 1000$? Quite likely, yes. As someone who is not as much a gamer as a productivity person, a portable monitor replacement (or a 'spatial computer') which doubles as a movie and entertainment device is definitely a win-win. And I'm pretty much in the Apple ecosystem with an iPhone and Mac, so it's a brilliant addition. Would I choose between this and the Quest 3? Nah. If I can afford a 3500$ headset I can afford to have a Q3 as well, with it and use it for gaming and fun stuff. If I can't afford a 3500$ headset, I can still afford a Q3 and get a Vision Pro at some point :)

This is a great video, thank you for making it - and taking the time to actually use the device before posting a review. It's a shame about the comfort, as that's a complete deal breaker to me. I finally got the Quest 3 to where I can wear it for a couple of hours, but this sounds like quite the step backwards, which was expected with the metal and glass build. Overall, this review really makes me look forward to the AVP2. I've enjoyed your videos for years now, and congrats on the Newegg sponsorship.

honestly it's not that heacy even compair to other XR device like a Pimax HMD which is twice as heavy and it's just 100grams more then a Quest 3... So weight really should not be a factor unless you have a bad neck or will use it constantly for months on end.

@@GreenBlueWalkthrough I've been using VR since the 90s - and weight distribution is the big thing. If they put the weight all over the body - just made the battery mount in the back to balance things out, I suspect it would be a lot more comfortable. For such an expensive device, I feel like Apple should have come up with a much better head strap solution - and I suspect they will for AVP2.

It's possible to have the audio from an app surround you instead of coming from where it is placed. If you open Control Center then press and hold on the volume adjustment, this will bring up a window where you can per-app adjust some Spatial Audio settings, including an option for it to treat your head as "fixed" (this essentially allows spatial audio as if the window was always directly in front of you) or even just set to stereo sound from that app.

I'm also heavily invested in the Apple eco system. (I'm a retired computer tech.). This review was the most useful one for me so far on the Vision Pro. (All your reviews are quite good.). So what's the killer app? The raison d'être? I follow a lot of Apple enthusiasts and none of them has answered this question.
@CasandChary
@CasandChary 2 ай бұрын
Good question. The "killer app" for the Apple Vision Pro isn't just one app, it's the entire operating system. For those already in the Apple ecosystem, it offers a new way to access all the apps you're familiar with. I found myself putting on the headset for a single task, only to spend an hour doing what I'd usually do on my phone, but in a more immersive/engaging setting. This retention time it can get because of this is unmatched, right now. While this experience alone may not justify the cost (as I said in the video), it certainly raises the bar for what we can expect from headsets in the future and I hope we'll get Android versions of this.
@rodmunch69
@rodmunch69 2 ай бұрын
Based on the video, the 'killer app' sounds like it's the OS and how well it works. This device is, of course, basically a public development kit, much like the Oculus Rift DK1 I bought, which had no killer app. But, by DK2, it had a much more impressive library, by CV1, it improved greatly, then the Quest, Q2, Q3, etc - all of which I owned and really have liked them all - except the DK1 which made me really sick, really fast. These things build, and anyone who is upset that Apple is in the VR field because it's not their brand of choice, really doesn't get it, and how Apple is pushing the entire sector to a new place.

I'm really impressed with the innovations in the Vision Pro! Currently, I'm an iPhone user, but I'm holding off on getting the Vision Pro for now. The main deterrent for me is the price point, and since I'm primarily a PC user, I wouldn't be able to utilize its full potential. However, I'm excited about exploring other options like the Vizor from Immersed. At least based on the specs it seems like a great alternative, and together with the Quest 3, it looks like I'll be well-equipped for the foreseeable future (at least until the fall lol). Can't wait to see how these technologies evolve!

The price alone makes this out of the question for me but apart from that It would need to have native PCVR support and controllers for me to even consider it. The resolution is what I expected the Quest 3 to have when it came out. The Q3 specs were so disappointing to me.
@rodmunch69
@rodmunch69 2 ай бұрын
The Quest 3 specs were disappointing to me as well - but I bought one anyways, and after using it a while, then going back and testing out my Quest 2, I can say with confidence that the Quest 3 is very much a full upgrade and a much better device. The resolution bump is fine, but it's the new lenses that make a big difference, they're just more clear - I guess that's how I'd describe it, but in any case, they're better, more so than the spec bump would make you believe. I bough the Q3 expecting to play with it for a few weeks and return it, but kept it, and have been using it more and more, in particular once I got that BoboVR battery head strap, that makes it so much more comfortable. But the color pass through cameras with its huge bump in quality makes the headset a lot more usable, a lot more than I would have thought as I didn't think I cared about AR at all. Also the few Q3 games out there that take advantage of the hardware are, much to my surprise, absolutely a generational leap. Red Matter 2, in particular, is really impressive and shows off what it can do. Anywho, I just was updating the Quest 2 the other day, since I haven't used it in a while, and it made me really appreciate how good the Quest 3 is.

You created an excellent review, Cas! Thank you so much for taking the time to cover all the features. Fantastic work as always, and thanks for sharing clips of the adorable Milky Way! Here’s my prediction for the near future: Apple is getting everyone used to having the external battery because they will eventually move the compute over to the battery pack… kind of like an über-iPhone without a display… which will allow them to shrink the headset smaller & lighter, while still delivering high performance. Once they’re able to further shrink down the contents of the compute / battery pack without sacrificing performance, they will then move all of that inside the headset. Just a prediction… 🤷‍♀️ maybe there will be a major battery breakthrough in the next few years that would change everything! 😂 Anyway, my point is that, with some future Vision Pro iteration, they will make a cellular model which could then start cannibalizing iPhone sales. (We already know the Vision Pro will likely cannibalize iPad Pro sales.) So instead of carrying around an iPhone + Vision Pro (with external compute / battery pack) + battery bank, you would remove needing to carry your iPhone. What do you think?

I’m of the opinion that these companies have working prototypes of significantly more advanced AT and VR tech than we have yet to see up to this point. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be trying as hard to develop ecosystems and design language for such a niche segment of the market. I’m sure these prototypes cost are massive… hundreds of thousands per unit potentially let alone millions in costs of development and such. BUT, they just don’t think, they KNOW that they will have consumer level options by the 2030’s and the first one to make the “iPhone of VR goggles” will have a new billion dollar industry to play in.

They have a track record of simply adding compatibility with existing hardware when it comes to gaming, instead if making new tech. So for example they added compatibility for basically every mainstream and even some obscure game controllers when Apple Silicon came out. So even if they don’t create a controller they will likely add drivers for compatibility.

I could always sell my kidneys but even with cost out of the picture its way too noche to reccomend for anyone that isnt already drowning in apple products. Basic things like blue tooth support for mice is surprisingly lacking which is hilarious considering the goal is productivity and an immersive workspace. Edit: Just came from trying it out. Visuals are definitely undoubtedly a 10. The accuracy of the eye tracking is impressive. Onoy had a few missclicks but over all 90-95% accuracy. And the audio was impressive enough to fool me into forgetting I wasnt wearing headphones/earbuds. Its a vool device and if money aint a problem go for it. But i can imagine using it for more than an hour. I never get motion sick but i did after a few minutes (it was most likely due to the prescription lenses being a little off -so not at all apple's fault) but ignoring all the minor cons regarding my experience, I still cannot justify that price when looking at the features. I still want one but I'll wait for the next generation. I definitely need to see what apple can do with gaming (not that they have an expert track record in it like Playstation or Meta) but if they can do something decent it would make it a lot better

Seeing “1 month later” in the title gave a lot of us the wrong impression. Like that you were going to go more in depth about if it was worth it to use it after a month and it it lived up to your expectations in some areas. Comfort was going to be a huge deal to hear about. But we just kinda got a long winded review going over capabilities 🤷‍♂️

I don't care too much about this device, especially at the price point. I have always thought apple was good at interface design, and really hope we see a resurgence in 3D releases of movies. Watching them on my Quest 3 has been enjoyable but there really aren't any commercial 3d releases anymore.

I have the money in my bank account right now but I know the second I pay for it and before it gets to me the Deckard will be released. Valve helped Apple get the Vision Pro out the door by letting them borrow their engineers and training Apple's so I hope once the yield of the Vision Pro's displays are ironed out Valve gets them for the Deckard. Not really an apple person, I have a mac mini but nothing else, mainly a Linux user so the Deckard will make more sense for me. Although then there is a huge hurdle of making a computing environment in VR that is usable for the Deckard that compares to the Vision Pros. . . still going to wait for the deckard.

This feels a lot like an initial review with a couple random 1 month later tid bits thrown in like that dual screen app. Not C&Cs fault, she trying to make juice outta rocks. Depressing that reviewers are still referencing that dinosaur experience. This feels like we are still in gen 1 while VR has been out a decade. Thx for the review! Not a lotta ppl putting out AVP videos anymore

Why does this feel like an initial review? Genuinely looking for feedback.
@justinbaker2883
@justinbaker2883 2 ай бұрын
Im saying a initial review typically spends a lot of time talking about price, specs, OS, what comes in the box, etc. Month later review would like to hear how your opinions, usage, and apps have changed from day 1 to now. Your method will make it more evergreen, but people who have watched a lot of the first round of reviews will have heard a lot of this already. Have you learned anything that you wish you knew before? Has the difference between quest and AVP grown or shrunk through the month? Did your feelings or times youve put it on wane or grow?

The Quest3 is close enough in features that it makes the Vision pro much much less appealing, for the price.
@Xeylo
@Xeylo 2 ай бұрын
Quest 3 lets you do most of these features, and more, including gaming. if it's REQUIRED to own a mac to use it for work, and controllers from other devices + 3rd party apps + a gaming computer just to barely run a good game, that's just bad. And you HAVE to keep the vision pro plugged in, getting only 2+ hours (look at how uncomfortable it looks in 28:40). Quest 3 gives you 2+ hours of gameplay or more without requiring cables.

Way too expensive. Plus you need to also buy an iPhone to activate the headset the first time, if you don't already have one. You need to realize that in total this is 2 months worth of salary for an average worker. But the iPhone's global market share is only 16% which means everybody else has an Android phone.

Hi and thanks for anothercdetsiled quality review but you must have money to burn lol especially when you can get a quest for a fraction of the price . Somewhere down the line Apple will definitely need to reduce the price if they ever want it to appeal to the masses - nothing more than 1000 tops and even then

Not for me due high price. I am not rich person. And also no Apple user. Besides, i am gamer too. More reasons this headset is not for me. Quest 3 did already good job here. Do i miss a lot? Nope. Apple headset is more business designed, for example share 3D works. And for 3500, you have also other good headsets, maybe with bigger FOV. And question about 3rd party solutions: there will not a lot, and they will not cheap too. Quest 3 has many 3rd party solutions and much cheaper for some comfort. And... as gaming headset also very risky. The front can break easy or damaged. It's heavy too to move fast around. If it fell off during hot fight... that is really bad. Apple repairs are not cheap. This headset has poor repair possibilities. The front is glued at headset! Don't buy it for gaming purposes. And in memory: 1TB is 4x more expensive compared to 256GB. That is typical Apple way, we know it's not 4x expensive compared to other headsets and mobile phones. This is why this Apple is too expensive, can risky and if you forgot password for example and cannot show proof it's yours, it will turn in expensive brick. Unlocking is very hard without proof, especially if your mailbox cannot reached, just like locked iPhone.

Be honest. You would never buy this if you couldn't tax deduct it...
@CasandChary
@CasandChary 2 ай бұрын
Tax deductions has nothing to do with it as it doesn't make much of a difference in the cost, since buying something just to deduct taxes is still more expensive than not purchasing at all, especially at this price. Importing the headset from the US also limited the deductions, so it didn't really make it cheaper. If I didn't review VR headsets on KZfaq, I might not have bought it because of the price, but I honestly think I would have had a hard time returning it if I had tried it in that case too.
