Participants learned about the Introduction to Data Science (IDS) high school mathematics course in which students collect their own data using hand-held devices and examine data from formal sources to learn to generate hypotheses, fit statistical and mathematical models to data, implement these models algorithmically, evaluate how well these models fit reality, and to think computationally while learning to program with data. The session shared the findings from the College Access through Data Science (CADS) grant, a CDE funded project implemented in an LA area urban school district in partnership with UCLA. Results from the CADS grant indicate that students who successfully completed the Introduction to Data Science (IDS) course were more likely to meet their high school graduation and college admissions requirements. In addition, students who took the IDS course showed an increase in their understanding of statistical concepts.
