I came from Vietnam back in 1975 when i was 12 yo and 2 years later i worked in a crab dock cooking crabs during the summer time in Baldwin(St. Mary Parish), with days waking up from 2 AM and finishing around 5 PM. My family started crabbing a few years later. Life was tough back then but i loved it. Now living in California but i'm still loving the lifestyle, food, and the Louisianians with their simple living and goodness hearts. Thank you for the video, bud.

Loved this video. I was born in Houma and grew up in New Orleans. My mother's side was spanish and father was French. I had not heard of the spanish settlement in Delacroix though. I enjoy learning about my heritage that is being lost every day.

I was born in Raceland,LA and moved to Colorado in 1990 but am hoping to get back to Louisiana as I feel the constant call to go back home to the swamps. I had lots of family down there and visited frequently throughout my youth. My mama, in her 90s, is still down there and ran a French bed and breakfast for many many years. There's mostly Spanish being taught up here in the schools so I know mostly that, but very little French. My ma speaks different French. It was interesting to learn about the Spanish speaking Cajuns. I'm of French Cajun and Canary Island Cajun heritage. I found your channel through DeerMeatforDinner, I'm glad I found y'all :).

I remember fishing at Delacroix 35-40 years ago when I was 8-13 or so. Used to leave from Kenner and launch at Rudy’s boat launch back when his son Kirk was a teenager. Get me a Hubee Apple pie and a Pop Rouge soda before we took off to trawl and fish. Caught many a cooler of shrimp pulling a 16 foot trawl in Bayou Bievenue as I recall. Thanks for the great videos from a new subscriber. Think about Delacroix when I hear Jimmy Buffet talking about fishing the pilings.

I was born in Jennings, raised in Lafayette and have lived all over the world. I live in Brazil and I speak, read and write fluently in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and I also speak Catalan, Dutch and Italian. Nice video nice crabs I know Delacroix full well I'm 68 I use to deliver milk bread newspaper, etc. door to door and the stores, I was in highschool then and worked with Earl Estopinol four bout 4 years good people, I know s lot of people down there I lived on Creedmore then good job letting people know about the canary islands, my grandparents could not talk English only Cajun french tks for video again brings me back to the good times down there.

My great grandmothers family was a blend of French and Spanish that settled around St Martinville. Some of them first came to the New Orleans area from Spain. Marin and De Reggio

I knew there was some Spanish influence in Louisiana, but didn't know to what extent. I got interested in Creole culture in Louisiana due to some speaking Creole. I'm from the Caribbean, and Creole & French are the official languages of my country. I'm glad for the advancement of social media, as it allows us to learn about so many different cultures & folks around the world! I find the Spanish culture in Louisiana just as fascinating! 😌

@@OutsidetheLeveesThere are also the malagueños who settled the New Iberia area. I’m not sure if you know who the malagueños are, but they are the descendants of 18th century Spaniards from southern Spain in the Málaga area of Andalucía similar to how isleños are descendants of 18th century Spaniards in Louisiana from the Canary Islands. Also, the OP is talking about a group of people in north Louisiana around the Zwolle and Natchitoches areas called the adaeseños who descend from 18th century Spaniards in Louisiana. So the isleños, malagueños and adaeseños together make up the Spanish Creoles of Louisiana. A distinction to make however is that both isleños and malagueños are white people while adaeseños are a white and Native American mixed race people called mestizos.

My Dads family grew up around St. Laundry Parish . Two of my cousins did a family tree . Our last name is Martin . But they found out our family name was at one time Martinez and the family was the Canary Islands as well as your family . The surname Martin in Louisiana has two avenues of ancestry: one is Acadian and one is isleño. The Acadian one is more common, however the isleño one is still a common presence. The Acadian Martin is originally Martin and as you pointed out, the isleño Martin was originally Martinez. I’ve even heard some people in Gretna, La. on the Westbank of Jefferson Parish that retained the surname Martinez (there was an isleño settlement in Barataria at one time) but they pronounce Martinez as MARTIN-ez with the syllable stress on Martin rather than the TIN (teen) part of Martinez. Strange but true.

I have stumbled upon your videos, and they are great. I have tried to research more about the Isleños culture in the past but there is not that much out there. I fish a lot in Delacroix and it doesn’t get much better, but I bet it’s nothing compared to how it was in its heyday. It would be cool to tag along with a crabber to see exactly what happens on a crab boat!

My grandparents were from Coteau outside of New Iberia. My maternal great grandma was a Segura. I’ve always wondered about the Spanish side of my Cajun heritage. My DNA says about 14% Iberian Spanish. Definitely need to do some research on this topic.

Segura is a malagueño surname. The malagueños were a group of 18th century Spaniards that arrived in Louisiana from the Málaga area of Andalucía in southern Spain. So you’re part malagueño. Malagueños are Spanish creoles like isleños are. Malagueño is pronounced like Mah-lah-gwain-yo. So many “Cajun” identified people these days are finding out they are not exactly Acadians (Cajuns). But we could see evidence of this with all the French, Spanish, German, British, Irish and Italian surnames mixed along with those Acadian surnames.

It is more French than Spanish Louisiana, but the Spanish still do exist just in smaller numbers. Besides, there are so many French or Cajun identified people that have Spanish admixture so it’s really hard for outsiders to know this.
