It is not only variable valve timing but also variable injection timing

Well if this is the case then can’t you just shut off air intake all together and just make it run on fuel only then reburn it?

Thanks for the question @tonydetwiler2624. Air is required for successful combustion. To burn fuel, a minimum air-fuel ratio is needed. If air intake is shut off all together, combustion is not possible. We’ve worked to find the best air-fuel ratio to minimize fuel consumption, optimize combustion, and reduce soot. - Maria
