When I was in the hospital, I was told that I would be able to catheterize myself but I was unable to when I left because I was not shown a catheter that I could use with my poor hand dexterity. I searched the internet to find a catheter that was quad-friendly and found the MTG-EZ Gripper catheter. Being able to self-catheterize myself was life-changing because of the independence that I gained. In this video, I show you how I catheterize myself with an MTG EZ-Gripper catheter. How do you catheterize yourself?

Thank you so much for sharing this. I’m female, and bedbound at the moment. My movement problems are neurological, and then an injury on top of it that robbed me of what little mobility I had. I use a pure system. It works well, but it’s not something that I can independently control, as someone has to be around to empty the tank into the toilet, as I have no way to get there to do it. Thanks again. I am very impressed with your kindness and absolute bravery of doing this for on KZfaq, for other disabled people.

I've been a t6 para for 21 years now and have gone through much trial and error since then. I'm currently spending most of my time in bed as I'm aging and making it more difficult to get around. I do all of my needs from the bed which takes some ingenuity. I now use an indwelling catheter most of the time as it cuts down on accidents. When not using the indwelling I use a condom catheter. This seems to work best for me Mason. You make it seem pretty simple Mason, we thank you for making these helpful videos. God bless!

I don't, but I remember when I was recovering from inpatient hip surgery at 8 or 9yrs old since I wasn't able to move my legs for probably six weeks due to them looking like an A, I had a portable urinal that I used for I think two and half days in the hospital and then continued using it when I came home. After I used it, somebody would dump the urine into the toilet for me and it'd be ready for the next time I had to go. Having my grandparents down here for my hip surgery was very helpful for mom and dad especially when I came home

Hi Mason, you are an inspiration. I have an SPC... just a question, what are the long term effects of having a fixed catheter?
@masonx54
@masonx54 3 жыл бұрын
By a fixed catheter, I assume you are meaning an indwelling catheter? One downside is that your bladder will eventually shrink because it is not trained to hold urine since the urine is being held in the bag.

Is there a reason they don’t use indwelling or more of a longer lasting catheter on quadriplegics so you don’t have to do it so often?
@masonx54
@masonx54 6 ай бұрын
Indwelling catheters have a greater risk of causing urinary tract infections (UTIs) and other \health issues. A lot of quadriplegics, especially those without arm movement, use indwelling catheters. As for me, indwelling catheters are a last resort because I don''t want to have something inside me all of the time. However, there are condom catheters, which are external but can cause skin issues. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Here in Brazil we use different materials, I use it completely differently, there is a probe/relief catheter so I adapt it to a plastic bag (coloplast conveen leg urinary collector)and leave the probe inserted in the canal until the bladder from one bath to the other, so the urine is running out in the platinum bag that I tie to my leg for 24 hours without having to take medicine to expand bladder or having to do catheterization. soon I will record a video of how I do it and post it here on my channel 😉🤝

I've been self-cathing for about a year now. Before that, I had a Foley catheter in me for about a year and a half(Mostly because of my weight and not being able to reach myself to self catheter). However, after losing some weight I was able to at least reach well enough to start cathing on my own for about a year now(I've still got a ways to go to get down to an ideal weight and to reach without a struggle). Since I'm still pretty new at this, I have a few questions. How often do you have to catheter each day? My urologist wants me to cath about six times a day, but there are times when I get very little urine(it depends on how many liquids I drink between cathing) so most days I do it about five times. Do you ever poke yourself inside the urethra as your sliding the cath in and draw blood? I think sometimes the lube on my catheter is not slick enough and it rubs and bleeds sometimes. I guess what I want to know is if this common. How often do you get a UTI? It seems no matter how clean I get hands and my private parts, I end up getting one about every five or six months.... Thanks for any advice you can give....
@masonx54
@masonx54 9 ай бұрын
Congratulations on losing the weight to allow you to self catheterize! I try to catheterize every five hours with one four hour in the night, so five catheterizations total. However, recently I have been needing to catheterize six times per day. Generally, you should catheterize every four to six hours. I have had some blood come out in the urine but it has only happened a few times in almost nine years. UTIs in our situation are very common. Since we catheterize, bacteria is always in our bladder. I recommend going to www.comfortteas.com and drinking that a couple of times a week. Thank you for watching and commenting!

During the night, I use the same kind of catheter (MTG-EZ Gripper) but decrease the amount of time in between catheterizations to 3, 3.5, or 4 hours because I tend to get higher volumes at night. I think it's because my feet are "elevated." Therefore, fluids don't go to my feet. Thank you for watching and commenting!
