@Empyreal empyreal it seems to me that MacArthur ignores all of the apostolic fathers and early church fathers when he speaks of the Catholic Church as if their writings are to be ignored or carry no weight at all . Some people say that about formerly being Catholics. I'm not looking to defend Calvinism, because I'm strongly opposed to their stance on predestination. I've come to the point as a Christian though, we need to have grace for each other, and just accept that some Christians have some different theologies. Our core as Christians is that Christ is our redeemer though, and if it weren't for his atonement, none of us could be fully reconciled to God.

@@saintejeannedarc9460 No, disagree that we just need “to come to terms with the fact that some Christians have different theologies.” In John 6, Jesus says “You must eat my flesh and drink my blood in order to have life within you.” Seems like an important difference between Catholics and most Protestants. “Life” here would most certainly mean “eternal life.” We should evangelize everyone because the Truth carries eternal significance.

@Eucharist Angel There could be no "sola scriptura" before there was a "scriptura" i.e. A bible; and there was no uniform agreement on which books compose the canon of the Bible. To this day there is not agreement as to which books belong or don't belong. Protestants have no way of determining which books compose their canon; or even why they hold the books to be inspired. They also have no authority superior to their own private opinion as to what is the correct interpretation of the scriptures; or how to settle disputes as to the interpretation among themselves. Sola Scriptura was also impractical until the invention of the printing press in the 15th C. Which made possible the widespread availability of books at an affordable cost.

Same. I was raised Protestant so it's no wonder I became an Atheist in high school. I spent 15 years wandering in that desert before I investigated the Catholic Church on a fluke (or maybe not a fluke.) I'm actually really mad that Catholicism was kept from me. I heard so much anti Catholic garbage growing up, from Pentacostals no less. Now, this last Easter Vigil, I and my wife, along with our son came into the Church. And we're blessed to have a Traditional, 1962 Father Lasance Missal, FSSP, Latin Mass.

@@josephalbek62 Do it. Even if the RCIA is a Novus Ordo (mine was.) Although, that being said, if you have a choice, you're more likely to be better Catechized at a Traditional Church that uses the Old Rite. At the Novus Ordo that I went through, the most effort they made was to have a few conversations and run a series of Bishop Barron videos. At this point, I was already well aware of Bishop Barron's... reputation... for waffling on important theological questions. "Dare we hope" and "Christ is the Privileged Way," etc. So, I wasn't thrilled to being taught the Faith in this manner. It went fine though. We were brought in, Baptized, Confirmed and First Communion. Although, I'll tell you this. For our First Communion, my wife and I wanted to receive on the tongue, the way it's traditionally been done. The Deacon and the Pastor nearly had an aneurysm about it because "muh Covid." We pressed the issue though. We wanted to receive our Lord for the first time with due reverence. They agreed, against their rather forceful "counsel," but we had to wait until literally everyone else left because and I quote the Pastor, "If others saw you receiving on the tongue, they'd want that too." So, the clergy specifically acknowledged that they knew what their sheep wanted and were intent to deny them and to go so far as to even prevent them from seeing someone else getting what they yearn for. Incredible. Needless to say, the very next Sunday after our Confirmation we attended the Latin Mass that we still go to and haven't been back to that Novus Ordo. I feel kind of guilty about using them for Confirmation, but not really. They lost us with the way they conducted themselves. The Novus Ordo sacraments are valid, I just cannot bring myself to attend Mass in that way. It's fine if you have nothing else, but seriously, the Traditional Catholics are right. 10/10 would recommend. I realize that there's many people that are upset by that claim, but there's a reason why the tiny parish I attend is packed to the rafters with people parking in the lots of surrounding businesses and walking to Church. Our "cry room" is standing room only during the 1030 AM high Mass. Meanwhile, the parish that I went through Confirmation with, was this massive, palacial Church and was nearly empty. Huge parking lot and finding parking was never an issue. At my Latin Mass Church, you better be at mass 30 minutes early minimum or you will be walking from a nearby parking lot.

As a protestant and graduate of Fuller Theological Seminary with an MA in Biblical studies I was so persuaded by John MacArthur. I thought he came across as a Godly person. But I saw him in an interview one time where someone asked him when the Catholic Church went wrong and he said he didn't know exactly "maybe in the 3rd Century" he said. But that is when the Church was developing doctrines like the hypostatic union, the Trinity, the incarnation. They were also starting to discuss a possible canon of scripture. If they did something we cannot trust in the 3rd Century then how could we ever know what is true? Jesus set up a Church, the New Testament makes that clear but according to MacArthur it started to fail within 250 years or so? Thank you so much Trent for debunking MacArthur's gross misrepresentations. You were a large part in my coming to see the gross errors in Protestantism and coming home to the Catholic Church. This introduced a false gospel and a politically run false church, claiming ,everyone must join the ONLY TRUE RELIGION THE ROMAN CHURCH. They later adopted the title as they did not recognise any church outside of it .Then they persecuted all others, killing thousand of Waldensians ,Ana-Baptists etc .In the 6th cent Pope Gregory sent Augustine of Canterbury to G.B. to try to get the British church to recognise him as head over all the churches .The representative of the British church Dionoth ,said they had their own bishops and did not recognise the Pope. Augustine threatened war, but died soon after. This was how you ended up calling the Roman church the one 'HOLY' Catholic church. In my town the last woman burnt at the stake was killed for saying she thought the bread did not change into the body of Christ . Many Catholics today do not believe it either. That is what happened to real Christians before the reformation. Thousands of Waldensians and Anabaptists were put to death .

@Philip Bolin First, do you believe in Eucharist? No, you dont. If you do, how do you celebrate the Eucharist which has been done since the Apostles' days? Read John 6:51-57. Apparently, many of you just believe in Jesus by the lips. Second, you seem to forget Jesus' OWN WORDS in Mat 28:18-20. Clearly Jesus instructs the APOSTLES to 1. Make all nations His disciples 2. BAPTIZE them in the name of the FATHER, and of the SON and of the HOLY SPIRIT. 3. TEACH THEM TO OBSERVE ALL THAT I HAVE COMMANDED YOU 4. I AM ALWAYS WITH YOU TO THE CLOSE OF THE AGE. You see how BAPTISM is a must. After that FOLLOW WHAT JESUS COMMANDED TO THE APOSTLES. I DONT SEE JESUS SAYING AFTER BAPTISM, DO AS YOU (THOSE ALREADY BAPTIZED) LIKE. NO, WE NEED TO FOLLOW WHAT JESUS HAD COMMANDED THE APOSTLES AND THUS THEIR SUCCESSORS.

@Eucharist Angel Fortunately, I can refute that very easily because my eternal life does depends on it. John 6:47-59 (ESV) Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. ****And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.****"The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, ****unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.**** Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever." Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum. - He also says the same, but shorter, at the last supper. Luke 22:19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” This is a pointless conversation. You aren’t interested in hearing the plain truth of the Bible. You’re too arrogant to consider that there might be an authority higher than yourself and your own interpretation of the Bible.

You've hit the nail on the head about modern American protestantism; "emotive frankness". People want quick and easy answers that are spoon-fed and that make them feel good. They do not want to have to do deep thinking on their own or have to connect dots. It's why they are so good at pulling one verse of scripture as a proof-text, whereas Catholics rely upon the Catechism which draws upon all of Scripture for a complete view of a teaching.

@Eucharist Angel "WE ARE THE ONES THAT HAVE PRODUCED MORE COMMENTARIES ON THE WORD OF GOD than anything the RCC has come up with, THAT'S FOR SURE. " Considering the Catholic Church has existed for nearly 1400 years longer than Protestantism, that's a highly dubious statement. Do you have any statistical data to back up such a claim? Or are you merely stating your opinion? Case and point about shallow thinking is to label the mystery of the Eucharist as a re-presentation as "science fiction", along with other terms such as "sham and a hoax". That's the language of a person who is not filled with truth and wisdom, but with bigotry and hatred.

Your blood will boil in hell. The true Bible was together at the start of the second century in Antioch ( Syria ). The early Church in the Acts of the Apostles were not the 'protestants' you are obsessed with. They were followers of the living God meeting in houses with the doctrine of the Lord Jesus Christ. They were hunted down and slaughtered ( all to no avail ) because of their belief in Gods Truth. In due course, the pagan emperor Constantine came along ( 4th century ) and invented the roman catholic cult thus declaring himself 'bishop of bishops'. See what the Lord Jesus Christ says about the 'mother of harlots' catholic system in Revelation 17 and how He prophesies it's total destruction in Revelation chapter 18 along with all the catholic heretics. 🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:03 📺 Introduction to the response video and its purpose. 01:23 📜 Church history support: Church history doesn't universally back the Roman Catholic Church; diversity exists among church fathers' views. 03:37 🕊️ Calvinism vs. Catholicism: Catholicism aligns more closely with early church fathers than Calvinism on doctrines like eternal salvation and justification. 04:56 🔗 Baptist Successionism debunked: The theory that modern Baptists trace back to ancient heretical groups lacks historical credibility. 06:08 📚 Early church fathers' agreement: Church fathers' unanimous agreement on Catholic doctrine is not accurate; diversity in their views exists. 07:47 ⛪ Apostolic succession: The concept of apostolic succession isn't biblical; apostles had unique authority due to personal encounters with Jesus. 09:52 📖 Scripture's role: The Bible is seen as the ultimate authority in Protestantism, but its interpretation varies among denominations. 12:39 🧐 Circular reasoning: Both Catholics and Protestants have elements of circular reasoning in their arguments about authority and infallibility. 14:45 🏛️ Church authority: The Protestant emphasis on individual interpretation lacks unity, whereas the Catholic Church claims continuity and authority. 18:02 🌐 Church unity: Protestant denominational diversity raises questions about the lack of a unified structure and authority. 20:50 📜 Solo Scriptura: The doctrine of "sola scriptura" (Scripture alone) as the sole divine authority is challenged by historical context and interpretation. 23:51 🕊️ End of public revelation: The argument from Jude 3 doesn't definitively support the belief that public revelation ceased with the apostles. 24:04 📖 God's revelation didn't cease after apostles; no evidence for living apostles giving revelation. 25:02 🎁 Cessationism: Holy Spirit doesn't give miraculous gifts like in apostolic times. 26:13 🧩 Calvin questioned by Catholics about miracles supporting Reformation. 27:23 🔮 Continuationists: Spiritual gifts continue; potential risk of accepting continuing authority. 28:21 📜 Authority dispute: Scripture vs. Tradition; Protestants emphasize Sola Scriptura. 30:00 🕊️ Tradition's role: Not extra-biblical, but pharisaical misinterpretation. 32:24 📚 Sola Scriptura: Divine revelation in Scripture, not in man-made traditions. 34:12 🙏 Catholic approach: Mary as mediator, contrasts Calvinist God's determinism. 36:03 ⛪ Catholicism: Plea to saints and intermediaries; Calvinism's predestination. 38:52 🕊️ God's nature: Reconciliation and salvation offered to all, not just elect. 43:29 🕊️ Imputed righteousness: God's treatment of Jesus, not actual sin transfer. 45:10 🔥 Atonement models: Penal substitution vs. Sacrifice of love. 46:05 🕊️ Atonement interpretation: Incarnation as 'being made sin' in 2 Corinthians 5:21. 47:27 🕊️ Alternative view: Imputed sin refers to humanity's fallen nature. 47:56 🤨 Catholic interpretation of "made him to be sin" refers to Christ as a sin offering, compatible with Catholic understanding of atoning death. 48:49 🐑 Second Corinthians 5:21 aligns with Catholic view of Christ as a passover sacrifice, offering himself for humanity's sins. 49:20 🕊️ Second Corinthians 5:21 does not refute Catholic concept of Christ's atoning death; individuals must choose to accept its effects. 50:01 😇 Catholics don't need to wait until after death to find out if Christ's sacrifice applied to them; it's a settled fact in life. 50:57 🌟 Catholics believe in justification by grace, apprehended by faith; human actions don't contribute to salvation. 51:26 😳 Calvinist view leads to double predestination, where God decides both salvation and damnation; contrary to Catholic belief. 52:07 🤔 MacArthur's view on imputation and righteousness is inconsistent with Paul's use of different Greek words. 52:21 🙏 Catholic view: Christ's righteousness applied to believers through sacrifice, transforming them and making them pleasing to God. 52:48 🚶 Catholics believe in transformation through Christ's righteousness, leading to obedience and a new heart. 53:45 🛐 Catholic view of transformation aligns with God's promise in Ezekiel for a new heart and spirit. 54:54 🕊️ Jesus' full life and obedience were necessary, fulfilling righteousness and inaugurating his mission, not just for a weekend crucifixion. 56:04 😇 MacArthur misunderstands Catholic view; infused grace is not about multiple infusions, but about transformation and cooperation with God. 57:16 🤝 Catholics believe in cooperation with God's grace, not diminishing God's sovereignty; faith and works intertwined. 58:41 🏰 Misinterpretation of Catholic teaching on purgatory and works by MacArthur; salvation comes from Christ's sacrifice, not personal efforts. 59:53 😇 Both Catholics and Protestants emphasize the role of faith, but differ in the role of works in demonstrating and increasing faith. 01:00:08 👀 MacArthur's interpretation of James 2 is flawed; James talks about genuine faith being evidenced by works, not about earning salvation. 01:08:10 🕊️ Catholics and Protestants have overlapping concepts of justification, sanctification, and glorification, with differing emphases on process and cooperation. 01:11:33 🤨 MacArthur claims that Roman Catholic theology prevents people from being saved, as it involves cooperation with God's grace for salvation. 01:12:15 🧐 MacArthur's strict view could limit true Christians to only five-point Calvinists, which is unlikely. 01:12:57 😇 Many new Christians in their church are ex-Roman Catholics, drawn by their existing belief in the Trinity, Jesus' deity, salvation, and desire for heaven. 01:13:39 🌱 Roman Catholics are fertile ground for effective evangelism, and it's tragic to misrepresent them as Christians already in the kingdom. 01:14:08 🌐 It's beneficial for Catholics to understand biblical foundations to share their faith with Protestants and vice versa. 01:14:48 🌊 Baptism is a response to salvation and an act of obedience; it follows conversion, not a human work that produces conversion. 01:15:29 🔗 Water baptism symbolizes joining Christ's body, while spiritual baptism unites believers into the spiritual entity of the Church. 01:16:25 🤔 MacArthur's view of spiritual regeneration before faith leading to later inclusion in the body of Christ is questioned. 01:17:05 🌊 Baptismal regeneration is not just a Catholic belief; many Protestants and even Eastern Orthodox accept its importance. 01:17:31 📖 Romans 6 suggests water baptism as uniting believers with Christ's death and resurrection, indicating its centrality. 01:18:26 🤷‍♂️ MacArthur's arguments are summarized, highlighting the importance of understanding diverse Protestant theologies for Catholics.

I'm so glad to see people standing up to this guy, John MacArthur and others, who can be at times ferociously anti-catholic. Even as a former protestant I would get irked in my spirit listening to his sermons and talks and I know others who did too. He not only goes after catholics but other protestants as well (charismatics, Billy Graham, Rick Warren, etc...). He seems to think he is God's watchdog and goes on the hunt and attacks. The man is entitled to his opinion as we do have freedom of religion but he seems to state things as though they were facts instead of merely his opinion. People seem to hang on to his words like he is the pope of the evangelicals. In my opinion, I find his views to be very narrow minded and he seems to take some things very literally in the bible. @Brent Braxston The next verse only proves synergism, that it is both God`s grace and our response to it that is at work here. @Eucharist Angel For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. Matthew 16:27 The bible says that God desires the salvation of all. If that is the case, which it is, and his grace is irresistible, there should be no one who is lost. Think about it. The Jesus you espouse is not the Jesus that the bible speaks of, or the Jesus I believe in, or the Jesus that the verse I just gave you speaks of. @Brent Braxston So, Paul here doesn't, as you suggest, "emphasize the need for 'us' to work it out," That simply isn`t true, and the text doesn`t suggest anything of what you`re saying. Perfect eisegesis. Furthermore, if one is elected, and no one can interfere with that election, it would make no difference if anyone were to interfere with the work of God, since they cannot lose their election anyway. Total nonsensical claims.
@myrddingwynedd2751
@myrddingwynedd2751 3 жыл бұрын
@Brent Braxston It still says that "when their free will is added". So it's clear that it is synergistic. Of course, no one us the initiator of the good, and that's what Augustine is warning against, to not claim the good work as belonging to you apart from God. So Augustine agrees that the free will of man is added, but to not boast that the good is solely your own. Its very simple when one realises that love requires the consent of two wills responding to each other, otherwise it cannot be love, and neither can God be loved by his creation if they are not free to respond or reject.

It’s one thing to say that transubstantiation was made up in the Middle Ages. It’s another thing entirely to see the thing “transubstantiation” being described by St. Ignatius of Antioch who was a follower of St. John. There’s no “middle man” or many centuries to mess with that. Reading that saint made me convert.

John MacArthur disputes the infallibility of the Catholic (Christ's) church and claims it's teachings are wrong i.e. fallible while at the same time claiming his teachings are correct and thus infallible. Oh the irony, and all from a teacher of doctrines that have been chopped and changed amongst the thousands of denominations since the time of Luther and Calvin. One would find it laughable if wasn't so sad. So, so sad :(

Different people, different countries (or states) different theology. Luther doubled down on the law( due to the constant warfare in germanic region) and went hard on the peasants (endorsed the killing of 300,000 german peasants).... calvin was a ideologue, and old school corporate CEO, feeds on the weak and ignorant and wanted a plantation state vision with the whip master ( himself) going to heaven. An elect few. Which is why it expanded in places like the deep south of america. Luther started it, but totally different people, and wanted to contain his people, calvin wanted to expand in defenseless territories ( like australia, english protestant world)

I'm actually grateful to John MacArthur for helping me to understand Protestantism. It's a bit round-about, so this will take some explanation. A typical discussion I've had with Protestants consists of them accusing Catholics of Pelagianism or Semi-Pelagianism, without using those terms explicitly. Since the Church proclaims these to be heresies, it's quite unlikely that the same Church would also be promoting them. I've gone over this ground with some people hundreds of times, discussed it, along with other Catholics, from every conceivable angle, but still the same people lob the same accusation. At this point there's no excuse for not knowing the accusation is false, so how can they justify bearing false witness? I came across an essay by MacArthur in which he stated that he could murder five people, die the next day, and still go to heaven. That seems counter-intuitive, since there would be no divine or temporal justice for his innocent victims. Where was he getting this? It turns out that Luther used the same example in regard to his idea of imputed righteousness. It was always clear to me that this doctrine is a license to sin, but various people who held it denied that. Not really surprising as people often hold logically contradictory ideas. But here was Luther admitting the truth of the matter, and apparently it wasn't just a quaint, obsolete Protestant belief as MacArthur was echoing it. Anyway, Luther followed the logic of his doctrine, and went on to say that it obviated the need for Christians to follow the Decalogue as well. So the admonition against bearing false witness was out the window, too, explaining why Protestants don't mind lying about what the Catholic Church actually teaches. Apparently, Luther also wrote advice to some of his protegés, on the basis of imputed righteousness, to "commit a few sins to shame the devil". Well, committing sins doesn't shame the devil, it's doing the devil's bidding, and advising someone to sin is a wicked thing to do. Imputed righteousness is clearly a false doctrine. Protestant lying about the Catholic faith is extensive. One of the sillier ones is by Thomas Horn, who wrote _Exo Vaticana_ , which puts forth the thesis that the Pope is in league with demons from outer space. It's surprising that anybody falls for this nonsense, but he put together a video accusing the Vatican Observatory on Mt. Graham in Arizona of naming its telescope "Lucifer". He interviewed some of the staff and highly edited the video to make an innocuous question and answer session seem somehow sinister. Well, it turns out that "Lucifer" wasn't the name of the telescope, but that of an imaging device in a different facility run by the Max Planck Institute. (It's since been renamed due to this slanderous accusation.) Horn was just outright lying; being in a different building entirely, this couldn't have been an honest mistake. So whenever some Protestant tells me I must leave the Catholic faith for Protestantism, apart from asking which of the thousand of sects I should join, I just remember all the lying, and the invented doctrinal justifications for it, and decline.

I remember years ago watching some of MacArthur’s sermons when I was going through a young earth phase (I don’t really care for either, old and young earth still speak to the glory of God there’s better hills to die on) and I watched a few videos and his stuff didn’t really sit right with me. Watching this now explains why I didn’t like his stuff. I will say, something I’ve realized about the works thing between Catholics and Protestants… is that it’s literally something we should be doing anyway. Like technically MacArthur is right when he says that our works should be proving that we are Christian. Exactly! That’s what’s going on in Catholicism too. Yeah they connect it to our ongoing sanctification but they are literally things we should already be doing!! So praying, going to mass, taking the Eucharist, the Ten Commandments, the laws, confession, and everything, we should already be doing those things with a joyful heart! That obedience comes from a joyful heart. It only becomes legalistic when you make it legalistic in your heart. I hear Protestants complain about the venial and mortal sins and how it’s horrible how legalistic Catholicism is when they are literally already doing that in their own mindset of obedience and ongoing sanctification in Christ and trying to be like him! And then I’ve heard Catholics yell at Protestants for not fulfilling these things when in reality they are, just outside of communion with the Church! That’s something Catholics need to realize when talking to Protestants, when you’re talking about the different types of sins and indulgences, you have to tell them that it’s what they’re already doing but it’s to make us closer to Christ not to keep us out of purgatory. Because that’s what they hear most of the time, indulgences keep them out of purgatory when from my understanding purgatory is just cleansing you of the last pits of sin before you died because you don’t want to come before God in any state of sin. Otherwise they’ll think “well I already am trying to be more Christ like, I don’t need to go to mass and get *your* Eucharist.” Especially since many don’t believe in purgatory. Purgatory is the refining place that many Protestants sing about but only associate to the trials of life not the place they go before meeting the Father. It’s crazy, cuz as soon as I put two and two together as a Protestant going Catholic, everything literally made sense! Like it clicked for me!! So yeah. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk! God bless!

Hi Trent, would you like to have a go at a theological question I have, quite beyond my own learning. I am very perplexed by the scripture 'Do you not know that we will judge angels?' 1 Cor. 6v3. How is this to be since the medieval teaching of man's position on earth in the Economy of Grace and the Great Chain of Being which place us higher than the sub-moral animals and lower than the sinless angels, prima facie seem to preclude this? Anything you can contribute much appreciated.
