Of all the films I saw in 2019, the two that I will remember are Joker and Cats. One was a disturbing, depressing and strikingly dark glimpse into the mind of a madman. The other had a clown dancing down the stairs.

Anyone else feel rebel Wilson sucked outside of singing and the cgi? Her character is just stereotypical chippy misfit fat girl. I can’t stand it and I wonder if she hated how she was portrayed. Edit: looked it up and it turns out Jenyanydots (from the movie version not the opera, obviously) is a transparent rehash of, and I’m not kidding with the name... “fat Amy” yes, really. I can write better than this.

You know, over a decade ago, I used to dislike the old Disney style of putting human clothes on animals. I was through an intense pre-adosecent anti-Disney stage in my life. As an adult, I look at this scene and would rather anthropomorphic animals wearing human clothes in "Robin Hood," "The Great Mouse Detective," and "Zootopia" rather than seeing live action human faces on animals such as here.

In the original Jennyanydots was an older momma cat that was well respected and the other cats were singing about her as she strutted around, not eating human cockroaches or doing dumb gags, and she was noticeably wearing a big poofy dress like how some others wear jackets, not *tearing off their skin coat*

Pause it at 1:17. What baffles me is that, despite all the 'digital fur technology' stuff, there's just no attempt to make the faces look like anything but human. The musical uses a lot of face paint, doesn't it? To make a black button nose and a the strong shape of whiskers with black lines. Here though, it's just a human face and hands upon a furry human body.

For anyone who didn't know, Universal notified cinemas on opening day that an updated movie file with "some improved visual effects" would be available and urged the theaters to replace the old file as soon as possible. THEY LITERALLY RELEASED THE MOVIE UNFINISHED AND PATCHED IT AS THEY WENT

Because in the musical you have professional singers and dancers performing on stage. Here you have movie stars and even if most of them can carry a tune, they are still being forced to sing live on a film set.

I can probably explain why. Almost all movies based on musicals record the singing in studios. For this movie, apparently they didn't record the singing in a studio. Instead they recorded it live as the actors danced around on set so it sounds dull and unfinished. They basically played out and sung on set almost as if they were acting out the musical, then CGI'd everything. That was the explanation given in a video critique.

@@michaeljara8552 The thing is that that approach can work quite well, IF it’s done properly. For example, all of the singing in the Les Misérables 2012 movie is sung live and it sounds brilliant (also helped by the fact most of the actors and actresses they cast were also good singers). Unfortunately, Cats 2019 didn’t get the memo and did this terribly.

Ian McKellen & Jennifer Hudson were considered early front-runners to win the supporting categories in March. Ever since Chicago reinvented the genre in 2002, every major stage to screen musical has some relative success with Oscar (with the exception being Mamma Mia, a pure commercial play). Phantom, Dreamgirls, Sweeney Todd, Nine, Les Miserables & Into the Woods all had Oscar success whilst The Producers & Hairspray got nominated for Golden Globes & SAG. The only true outright disaster at Oscar for a musical (prior to Cats) were Rent & Jersey Boys. Given the history, of course Cats had Oscar buzz. It’s only natural to assume musicals will, just how when Universal puts out Wicked next year that will inevitably have Oscar buzz too

There’s apparently a background extra during the final scene that THEY FORGOT TO ANIMATE. They forgot to give him the cat fur, so he just looks like a regular person. I can’t find any pictures of this, but multiple people have cooberated that this is a thing

@@izzyboola8889 No. The feet, hands, nose, mouth and eyes are left like normal. Ears, tail and fur/mane/hair is emulated to the animal though. Basically to feel like its a human in the suit but feels more like humans intermixed with animal to their body.

It bothers me how far away from cats these characters are. Like, as in ACTUAL cats. In real life cats are cunning, elegant and playful animals and in this movie their portrayal is closer to just... being humans? The movie kind of judges their behavior and personalities as if they were humans who are horrible at being humans. From a cats perspective, Bustifer isn't a glutton, he's a privileged cat who indulges in the finer things: human food. Jenny is a nocturnal cat, so she seems lazy and simple to humans but the cats know that she has a secret life as a hard working member of the cat community, doing... cat stuff that they respect. Misto is a clever cat that humans can't figure out (I always thought of him as THAT cat that figures out how to open the cupboards or sneak outside and then back inside) and in this they just... made him a love interest type of boy.

Yeah I just watched the scene from the play and the purpose of her character was to be charitable toward the rats and mice, in this one she says "They can't keep me in this kitchen!" as if someone's making her do it, which makes little sense. Honestly it's hard to dissect the lines of the plot because the imagery here is so convoluted and disturbing.

@@daisy-gp5nj They did live singing for this movie. They had a vocal coach named Fiona McDougal whose whole job was to teach them to not sound out of breath and screechy. That said, there wasn't a single character in this scene who sounded particularly good. I get that the mice were kids, so they get some leeway, but even with that they weren't exactly saving the scene with their singing skills or anything.

WHY, the Gumbie in the og musical was an older respected cat, and she was a great "parental figure" to the kittens. This was a HORRIBAL reincarnation of this character, and dare I say it, a even worse choice for the actress who played her. No hate to the actress, but she just makes the character sound, and look, like she is way younger than she supposed to be. The only thing of this song is when the mice sing, that little bit of song that their singing is in the original version of the musical, it was on brodway.
