These are the top 10 reasons why 2019's "Cats" is the WORST. For this list, we’re taking a look at why the cinematic version of “Cats” is a shoddily made, borderline incoherent mess of a movie, and why "Cats" is the worst movie of 2019.
We acknowledge that this is destined to become a “so bad, it’s good” cult classic, but that’s clearly not what the filmmakers or studio had intended. From its creepiness, to its annoying songs, to its complete absence of a plot, there are too many reasons to count why "Cats" is one of the worst movies of the year. The reason the orignal cats movie was done in the theater style was because the film makers didn’t think it would translate well to an all film-based story. They purposefully kept it as a theatrical musical. They were given the option to redo it so it had a storyline but they felt it took away from both the ts Eliot’s poems and Webber’s music

I recently rewatched the 1998 film of Cats where they all performed in costume. I don’t get why they just didn’t do something similar for this film. Why did they have to try and deviate from the plot so much???

@@Ravewave126 uh , yes I did . A plot is not simply explaining to the audience that things are going to happen and then end . That is just a narrative with zero subtext or meaning . The characters do not have a chance to develop nor did I care what happened to them as a consequence. Maybe there exists some metaphor but it’s so so vague ,that I wouldn’t call it a plot line that was anywhere near complete.

@@AmericaJonesiepipes Cats does have a plot. The Jellicle cats prepare for the Jellicle Ball where Old Deuteronomy (basically the Jesus of the Cats world) picks a cat to go to the Heaviside Layer. We then go through some cats who are showing themselves to try to be worthy enough to be chosen as the Jellicle choice. During this, Grizzebella is being shunned and rejected by the rest of the cast and tries to be accepted throughout the entire show. Most of this is explained in the beginning and it's kinda clear when watching it.

@@natalollipop_art basically, one must extrapolate the whole “Jesus” plot out of nothing . The play is based after a poem , which btw also does not explain wtf a jellical cat is . Excuse me if I spelled that wrong , though idc because it’s not a real thing . At least whenTim Burton adapted a poem into a feature length film we ended up with A Nightmare Before Christmas .compare the two , one is a complete story with an intact plot while the other clearly is not .

I think the biggest change they made in the film is that they made the Jellicle Choice into a contest. I believe the reason is that in the broadway show,the idea of being picked to be reincarnated has made the Jellicle Cats seem like a cult.

KittyPooComedy Honey, Titanic didn’t have cgi demon cats. I honestly thought the dancing and sets were fun and inventive. It’s just REALLY hard to get past such unredeemable cgi. It actually sucks for the artists that are getting bashed for working on it. It’s not their fault the movie was so rushed, and therefore incomplete.

My wife dragged me to this because of her nostalgia of seeing Cats on Broadway when she was 11. It was creepy as f*ck and we walked about 30 minutes into it. We both hated and it just felt cringey. I told her it was a bad idea to see it. For me, the best part of the movie, however, was the previews. We went and saw 1917 as a result a couple of weeks later. You know it's a bad movie when you are thankful you made it in time to catch the previews.

I liked it a lot. It's not really a play, though. It's more of a cabaret -- different acts put on by the different cat characters with only a VERY loose through-line running through the whole show.

I actually preformed it in HS. It serves better as a musical than a feature film. In a musical your prefomance is based completely around the song and it’s transitioning from one to the next, instead of the film where you need to have time for exposition.

A musical stage production doesn't necessarily need a tight plot because if the live performances ie, the songs, music and dancing, are done right, then you can have an amazing musical revue with just the thinnest thread of a plot tying the numbers together. However, a film is a little bit different and music and dancing doesn't always translate or "come through" with the same power as when done on stage. And that's assuming all things are equal and that the movie's performances are at least close to as good as the live show's, but in this case, the most of songs are weak , watered down versions that dont compare to those in the original live show's. So before we even factor in the creepy CGI, the film was already had several strikes against it.

Recently, Red Dwarf made an hour and a half long episode about the Cat's people. We saw lots of humanoid cats in there, and I think it's safe to say they were all better.

I always thought the musical was great because of the way I interpret it. The Jellicle Ball is not a competition, the Cats are trying to prove they still belong. The cat that is chosen is ultimately a sacrifice. Think about it - Every time Grizzabella comes out she is shunned and forced away, then at the end she scream-crys "memory" and suddenly everyone loves her again? Bitch please - she goes into the "heaviside layer" and promptly hits the heaviside ground face first and burns up all 9 lives.

Although "jellicle cats" is defined as a corruption of "dear little cats", when visiting friends in NE England (Geordies) in 1967 they referred to their cat as a "jellicle cat". When queried, they said it was because of what it looked like. I said, "Oh, we call that a calico cat in the US." Who knows?

The director was too arrogant (or stupid) to take the backlash to the trailer as his cue to completely redesign the characters. Just fixing their CGI fur was as effective as rearranging the deck chairs on a sinking ship.

When I first heard about Cats The Musical being adapted into a Movie, I was hoping that it would be an animated movie with normal shaped cats like Disney's The Aristocats. Although, after thinking about it, it would be difficult for The Jellicles to dance, which is what this Musical is all about. And I suppose they used CGI on the cats to make the film feel more Cinematic. So yeah, adapting Cats into a movie was a Lose-Lose.

Actually, some studios will record real people dancing and use the video to help them figure out how to make their characters move the same way. They even did motion capture for George Miller's _Happy Feet._

The sad part of this is there WAS an animated Cats movie planned that looked like Aristocats. Sadly, it was scrapped before anything happened. You can find concept art for a few cats floating around google.

With the comment about Jason Derulo’s performance as The Rum Tum Tugger being extremely sexual, in the Broadway version the character pelvic thrusts is multiple of the girls faces, so it wasn’t just this interpretation of the Rum Tum Tugger, that’s just his character. Now with the rest of the characters in the original aren’t supposed to be extremely sexual, at least I don’t think they are.

The live version was great and it’s longevity and awards speaks for themselves. There is totally a plot and the comments about the missed meaning of things (i.e. Jellicle cats) from this video are explained if you just listen. However it didn’t make a great movie because of the digital animation, in my opinion and the added scenes. Don’t judge this until you’ve seen it. there are some funny parts and James Corden steals the show. It’s also emotional and has a happy ending. Give it a watch and decide for yourself. Cheers.

There was a major glitch that they didn't fix when "Cats" was released to theaters. What was supposed to happen was that the projectionist would hit the "PLAY" button and the movie would self-destruct. Unfortunately, when the "PLAY" button was pressed, the movie actually played, disappointing audience members.

You should never complain that the cats movie is just introducing cats, because actually the movie/opera is based on a poetry where every cat has an own unique story and is formed in a poem. I do dislike the cats movie though, because its CGI is not well made. (Sorry for my bad English, i am still learning.)

I love the 1998 version of cats because we only have about 30 characters who we see on screen the whole time. If you want to learn more you just have to watch the background. I agree with you that the poems give us whole detailed stories.
