That contour/profiling at the top of the side panel made all the difference. Looking good gents 👌👍

Looks great guys, when tapping do a full turn and then turn it back a quarter and it ejects and clears the swarf making it easier to turn next time. Great show.

Probably easier to use a starter tap, it will make the main tap easier I reckon. Then follow the bushcraft and fishing fella

I like the covers, they look like they fit the area. Once painted they will look even better. If you keep with the black idea they will blend in.

That seam at the top, thought of filling it with solder? Some pinchweld, along that edge where you trimmed the sidecover mounts should tidy that up nicely, in black it may just help that area vanish from sight. I had my doubts to begin with, but damned if you guys haven't done a great job. Cruising down the road, the flannelette waving in the breeze as hipsters everywhere kneel and bow, "We are not worthy" Looks great, built not bought. Congrats.

Im loving this series and the bike is really coming together. Not sure why the tapping was so strenuous though, always found it to be fairly straight forward. You absolutely can use the drill press (ive also used a lathe) to tap. Great job so far, and giving me some great inspiration for my own CB250 build..

The covers came up great 👍, you guys need to invest in a Air hacksaw, that way you can do all the cuts without the sparks ⚡️ keep up the good work 🏍

Just a thought, could have use those captive nut clips. They allow a bit of free play and save all the welding and tapping. Anyway, good job.

Looking good boys... Was expecting Matt to lose a thumb there for a bit lmao.., if the panels vibrate add a couple of mill. Droplet of automotive silicone on the mounting face like a rubber gasket. It will act like a rubber gasket not allowing any rattling noise.. Cheers

There are different size RivNuts for different depth metal that you could have used, quick and easy install and work well for holding things like side covers in place.

I was more worried about the water and electricity mixing more then the petrol and sparks haha. With taping those holes it seems like the holes was too small for the tap, i'm sure there would be a guide on the net somewhere about the right size drill bit for the certain tap. Got there in the end anyway. Side covers do look better for sure. Cheers.

Hi Mark, Mark here Manitoba, Canada. I agree it is starting to look like a café racer. In my opinion , I think the bike would look even better with a set of straight handle bars. Would like to hear what you guys think. keep on keeping on.

Hi Mark - it shouldn't be that hard to tap those threads. Did you use the correct size drill before tapping? There's charts to tell you the correct drill diameter, but a quick way to know is to subtract the thread pitch from the diameter and that's the drill size. For example M5 x 0.8 thread would need a 5 - 0.8 = 4.2mm drill.

A few years ago, just for fun, I took a night course in TIG welding at a technical college. It's a great way to learn techniques and tips from a pro. Maybe something like that is offered near you? This was my polite way of not commenting on those welds ... lol . The side panels are going to look good!

If you had that much trouble starting the tap the hole was to small. I really wish you sort some help from a tradesman on this build as the poor fab work is a downer on a otherwise great build. If I lived closer I would have been happy to help out.
@ChaoticDetour
@ChaoticDetour 5 жыл бұрын
The point of Mark's channel is what the average guy can do with a little gumption on a limited budget. He is knew to this as are many of his viewers. If you have followed him very long you will notice how much his skills have progressed over the years. I am sure his fab skills will improve the more he does. If he always had someone do it for him how would he learn from his mistakes?

Also when hand tapping, use a back and forward motion: ,cut a quarter turn or so of thread, then back out the tap a little , lube, rinse, repeat. Avoid using hand taps in power tools, they are not designed for the torque and may shear catastrophically.

I watched a video a few years ago of a super bike ...it had no rear fender with a huge back tire . Well his female passenger flew off on a bump and landed on the wheel and it sucked her tight . happened fast and before the driver could stop it burned threw her clothes black smoke and all. had to of burned to her tailbone spine whatever . It was horrific and I bet it was life altering for her.

Your taps must be as blunt as f@#k ! 5mm hole for an m6 and easily tapped with one hand . use a bit of oil / wd40 as lube . JB weld would work well to fill and fix the split in the side covers .
