Testing the new .22 lr self-defense ammunition from CCI with my KEL-TEC P17. It features a copper jacketed hollow point bullet with skiving to help the bullet open up and expand into 6 petals all the while delivering around 8 inches of penetration in ballistic gel when fired from 2.5" to 4" semi auto pistols... or at least that's what's advertised... the ads show beautifully expanded bullets.... does it deliver? That's what I set out to find out with my trusty P17.

I see where your P17 runs great and I have a dilemma in deciding whether to get a P17, or the highly rated Taurus TX22 which has had its share of issues and I also have had a very poor experience with factory repair of a Taurus G2C and am still hearing stories of very poor customer service from them. It appears that when you get a good one then they're great, but if there are any issues then dealing with Taurus is a nightmare. I am wondering if you have a TX22 and can compare the two. Reliability is very important to me since the fun of having a semi auto plinker is in being able to fire it a lot without dealing with a bunch of jams, misfeeds, light strikes and failure to ejects. I've been shooting 22's since i was a kid so I understand that the ammo isn't as reliable as centerfire and that some guns work much better with some brands of ammo than others and sometimes you just have to test it our with a number of different types of ammo to determine what works best.

@@JamesJones-cx5pk Thanks for the input. I like the Sig P322 the most but I keep reading of folks having issues with the barrel leading up and issues with the mags feeding rounds. The Sig costs twice what the Kel-Tec does. Feel like I'm gambling on a 22 semi auto problems no matter what I pay, and if that will be the case then I'd rather not fork over the extra for the Sig if it isn't going to work any better.

I wasn't there. I don't know what goes on at any of these other guys ranges. I do know that if you work for a company, you're not going to put a video out showing their product in a negative light. That's just common sense. Nobody in their right mind would do that. If they did, they wouldn't have their picture on that company's products anymore and if you disagree with that you've never done business with anyone in your life. That's why I keep my channel unsponsored. I don't want to owe anyone in the industry anything. I'm not accusing any of these video makers of anything nefarious. Their batches of ammunition may have worked fine. It is however, a very bad look.

@@josephpacchetti5997If the density of the test medium is not close to that of human soft tissues (1.040 ± 0.020 g/cc), then there is no way that the test medium can accurately reproduce the expansion and resultant penetration depth of a test bullet. The density of human skeletal muscle tissue is 1.045 g/cc. The density of human adipose tissue (aka: 'fat') is 0.945 g/cc The density of properly prepared and calibrated 10% ordnance gelatin at 39°F is 1.037 - 1.043 g/cc. The density of water is 0.9982 g/cc at STP. The density of Clear Ballistics Gel is 0.824 g/cc. The Clear Ballistics Gel product is between 13% and 21% less dense than human soft tissues. This is why Clear Ballistics Gel produces less dynamic pressure to initiate and drive projectile expansion. Clear Ballistics Gel produces less expansion and greater penetration than what occurs in any human soft tissue or either of the two valid accepted soft tissue simulants: 10% ordnance gelatin and water. The take-away? Clear Ballistics Gel is an inferior test medium which is incapable of producing test data that is representative of any human soft tissue.

These are rated at 950 fps. I was averaging 973 fps according to my chronograph. So the velocity was on the high side of what the bullet was supposed to be engineered for, not the low side. Obviously the bullet was not properly designed to bloom at the rated velocity.

@@buffalosoutdoors I thought that the best thing to do with undersize,underpowered rounds,was to make a LOT of deep holes, and not worry about expansion. This was the lore according to KZfaq when I first started to watch gun channels !
@FTWIHA
@FTWIHA 6 ай бұрын
@@CrimeVid That's still mostly true though, at least in "professional" use. If you use a bullet smaller than 6.5mm you're better off going for high velocity and a bullet design that is either frangible or yawing and that can withstand a high twist rate because while a 4.6x30 for example carries the same energy as a 9x19, the bullet simply does not have enough mass and size to efficiently deliver that energy through expansion, so it has to be delivered by either using the entire surface area of the projectile through yawing or to dissipate and deliver it through fragmenting. Taking 4.6 as an example again, this is the exact reason the military and LE use homogenous brass and steel bullets with a copper plating for aerodynamics and barrel life, because those rounds yaw and disintegrate like hell. Same reason why you're better off with homogenous bullets in .17HMR or the glorious .17 MachIV for hunting.
@buffalosoutdoors

@@CrimeVid As you heard me say that in the video, yes, I still follow that doctrine. Penetration over expansion in calibers like .22lr, .25 acp. .32 acp etc etc. Typically, what I have found is bullets in those calibers that expand don't deliver enough penetration. However, I enjoy testing new designs and seeing bullet/cartridge technology move along so I had I hopes for this Uppercut stuff for the people out there that prefer a little expansion in their small calibers.

Excellent testing. That bullet does not make enough velocity to reliably expand under a variety of conditions, as you showed here. It seems it ONLY expands in 10% organic gel which is sad because a lot of people see those videos and think it represents real world conditions. As yours and many other videos have shown, once you get just the slightest bit outside the consistency of the organic stuff this bullet fails. Not to mention that when it does expand in organic gel it does not meet penetration requirements, something many people seem to not be noticing. Thank for your hard work and thoroughness!

But if he did say that why didn't he say that in his video. If these bullets are so sensitive that they require special circumstances to expand that is important information to share with your viewers and makes the ammunition useless in real word conditions. What are you supposed to do stop your attacker and give him a bottle of water because his liquid percentage was off a little? That's why I find it hard to believe that he said that but stranger things have happened.

For whatever it's worth, in 22plinkster's comments section he is responding saying that he used calibrated "Simtek gel". I am just a layman on the subject. Thanks for the review and being transparent and frank about it.

Others have mentioned that. I didn't know he was being scrutinized for his video. Here's the thing about the gel. If my self-defense hollow points require a very specifically calibrated gel in order to work then it's worthless in the real world. What you gonna do with an attacker who isn't exactly 70% water? Give him a bottle of water if he's a little low, make him run a mile if he's high? That way he'll be just right so that hollow point can expand. Nope I don't buy it. If my self-defense hollow points require a particular gel in order work properly then they aren't self-defense hollow points.

Thanks for testing this, Buffalo! Although it was a disappointment, I greatly appreciate your honesty! In science they say even a failed experiment teaches you something. Now I know what NOT to buy! Thanks! On a side note, CCI also recently released the CCI Clean Hyper Velocity load with a 31gr polymer-coated lead flat-nose bullet with ballistics somewhere between a Stinger and a Velocitor. I suspect they would perform a whole lot better than these did and would love to see you test some in your P-17 as well as in some shorter and longer barrels.

Great video...late to the party over here but CCI pulled that ammo. Keltec knocked it out of the park with the P17, which is my "go to" choice for C/C for all the reasons you mentioned, plus the fact that you can carry 49rds of freedom seeds that weighs in at just over 1 lb...talk about a party in your pants...50 if you count the other fun gun, lol. One could spend a lot more & still have nothing better!!! The new king of the 22lr pack in my opinion. There are some great 22lr defensive ammo choices out there.

Would be interesting to see if it expanded at all shoot from a rifle. I think CCI needs to rework the bullet so that the jacket is thinner at the tip because it took you a while to file it down from all the copper there. That is probably preventing it from opening up at pistol velocity.
@buffalosoutdoors
@buffalosoutdoors 6 ай бұрын
I had plans on testing this from a variety of barrel lengths and firearm types. I lost interest when it couldn't perform the job it was engineered to do. CCI never intended these to be fired from a rifle, they don't even list a rifle velocity on their website. If I have to use this ammunition in a way it was never intended just to get it to work I'm not interested. I do thank you for the comment.

Hey brother, you never made a boring video yet. I watch your videos because you give a working man's review on these weapons and ammo. You've never let it go to your head either, like many YTube video makers do. Ok. About the ammo... to me, a "defensive round" as they claim it to be, should have a bullet that may not penetrate as deep, but expand, and cause a nasty wound channel. This ammo did not, neither did the Federal Punch. They being hollow points, they should have mushroomed out better. Glad I saw this before loading up my P17. I'll check out your bonus video next. Great video, as usual, with a great 22 pistol. I have one too. It's my 2nd favorite 22 next to my Ruger 22/45 Lite. As for the ammo...I think we need a duel between you and Plinkster. Both shooting at the same range, into the same kind of gel. You could each bring your favorite pistol and let the other guy shoot it. The results are somewhat shocking in the two videos. I think both of you gave your honest opinions, but there's got to be a reason one shows great expansion and the other shows NO expansion. Kentucky and Tennessee are neighbors. You guys need to meet at the border (not the one in Texas) and have this duel. Science is calling.

Thank you Buffalo Outdoors, pretty much echoes my test firing...I don't have access to gel-blocks, but basing my findings on "report" and "felt-recoil", I am disappointed with these CCI Upper-Cuts. I tried them with an S&W M&P 22 and an older S&W model 18, 4-inch K-frame revolver. I tried them against CCI's Velocitor and Stinger rounds. The Uppercut both, sounded a much lower report, and much less felt recoil. You could really sense the difference between them and the other two CCI offerings. I just wonder why CCI would develop a really good copper jacketed 22LR round, and NOT use the same loading as either the Velocitor or the Stinger. I'm sure they'd have had a winner if they did. So, now I'll relegate these for pest control. Again, great! video and report

So, the CCI sponsored channel you mentioned has stated in some comments on his video and on another channel's video that this ammunition will only expand in the type of gel he used in his video. I was not aware of this until some viewers pointed it out to me. I've had great success with bullet expansion in Clear Ballistics during my .22 magnum short barrel revolver testing, especially with that 45 grain Federal bullet. Those videos are on YT. These Uppercuts are apparently much more picky about expanding. Glad you enjoy the videos!
