Interested in making your N-scale railcars into one-of-a-kind works of art? The process can be fun but the small size of the models makes handmade graffiti a unique challenge. Here, we examine fine point markers and other tools that might help!

I agree! It may never be perfect but I enjoy the personal artistic touch on my rolling stock. They become truly one of a kind.

Thanks Donald - I'm no artist that's for sure, definitely not like the guy from the midwest who weathers HO cars like true artworks, though I do watch his videos religiously :). Good luck and have fun with it!!

I'm going to have to find some of those paint pens and markers. I've been using acrylic paint and detail brushes along with sharpie markers for my graffiti work. Great video great work !

Thank you Fred, turns out those pens have been incredibly useful in a lot of precision applications beyond graffiti. I'm really happy with them thus far.

Enjoyed your tutorial very much . As we have talked before , my hand shaking for fine work is getting worst , so I will have to use the decals . They are okay after using the Solvaset . I still might see if I can put some free hand on . Keep up the great video's .

Thanks Steve. I think it's totally fine to approach this from what you can do. I have a number of cars with decal graffiti, I've been pretty happy with MicroScale's decals. A few rounds of Solvaset with high quality decals seems to do fine. I will airbrush fade and weather on top of that to get rid of that 'fresh paint' look that not much graffiti really has.

IMO, tagging / graffiti post spray paint era significantly increases scene realism. Great job, as usual. Your video is a reminder I'm so glad I model HO scale, lol. I have not yet tried dry transfer film for my own artwork but at some point it will happen. In addition to my own drawings, there are a few photos of graffiti I took while traveling that I'll Photoshop, print and then affix to structures/walls on my layout.

I do sometimes envy the HO modelers as the scale is more amenable to these sorts of details - at the same time I do find N can be a bit more forgiving for my level of sloppiness (or at least people seem more forgiving because of it!). I'd love to see how your models turn out with the transfer films - sounds very cool!!

Try the Windsor Newton Series 7 brushes...expensive but wowzers are they great!

Thanks for this. I don't mind using decals, but I need a way to do tags, the little barely legible scribbles. I'm going to try the Micron pens. My hobby shop was showing off some kind of paint pens for doing fine work, I'm going to go back and see just what those were too.

I'd actually forgotten I had that car til I pulled a bunch of railcar photos for the video! Oddly enough, Atlas made a run of those some years back.

The YARR still exists under Ohio Central/G&W operation. The 3rd video down in my recent uploads was them spotting a steel customer. The prototype branch is mostly dead though unfortunately.

Amazing that you can do all this at 1/160 scale! I'll have to check out a stationery store in Japan when I go there in March - have added the pens to my shopping list.

Awesome!! Hope you find some cool stuff there. One thing I noticed post hoc on the case for those Gelly Roll pens is that they make even finer-point pens that are non-ballpoint. I'm going to try and find those, they might solve some of the 'traction' problems I had.

I can understand the desire for authenticity but every time I see a rail vehicle defaced by these so called artistd my heart sinks.

Graffiti art on trains is certainly polarizing John, I agree. I have no particular take on it other than to represent what's out there as an extension of my own artistic mission. But I get it, many also would just rather have their cars without and that's also fine by me. I actually keep a stock of weathered but non-graffiti'd cars for when I run more prototypical late 80's early-90's trains, when graffiti was much less commonplace.
