Connections and conductors in a ceiling rose and pendant with the old cable colours RED and BLACK. We look at the layout of a ceiling rose and its connections - loop, neutral and switching line but this time with the cable colours from pre 2004. At college we often have only 2 twin and CPC (twin and earth) cables at the lighting points and they are in different conductor colours during training but often in the real world this would be 3 cables. The connections in the ceiling rose are for the 3 plate method of wiring a lighting point explained using pre 2004 cable colours BS 7671.

In Germany red used to be the earth. One can think what happens if one connects a German light fixture.

we're still on red and black with green/yellow for earth here in Australia. unfortunately, after two years my attempt to become a sparky has come to an end. nobody wants to take on a 40 year old lady as an apprentice, especially when there's government incentives to hire under 25s. so I am going to become a nurse... which isn't at all what I want to do but its what is available for me.

I’m fitting a new light and it has a little white box to put the neutral, live and earth wire in, but I have all these wires what are in the rose. What do I do?

Does that 3 pin bayonet (BC3?) have a designated polarity?

No. As stated in the video the inner spring loaded pins are not polarised. The outer pins are to hold the light bulb into the holder and are not electrical. 2 pin is standard. 3 pin is for a special light bulb.
