In this video I talk about the rich history Humanity has when it comes to Winter Solstice celebrations, and ponder the disconnect South Africans have with regards to the Winter season.

Here's what I've been planning for my first winter solstice celebration: 1. I make a chocolate cake. I wanted to make a yule log cake but I don't have the skill for that yet. What I can do instead is make a normal chocolate cake and add seasonal fruits to decorate. 2. I create a fire and roast marshmallows. 3. I go out for a long walk with a trash bag and shears, and collect flowers and plants. Collecting evergreen plants and those that grow in winter time. They symbolise fertility due to them growing in a time where many pants die or lose leaves for winter time. I use these to decorate around my house. 4. Light a candle for what I'm thankful for: Pets, friends, family... 5. Light candles to represent the sun and it's growing strength. 6. Make bird feeders using apples and seed. 7. Write down and burn your gratitudes. This you burn in your solstice fire, for me it's the same one I'll be using for the roasting. 8. Write a short letter to a deceased loved one then burn it. Burning the message will carry it over to them in the realm of spirits. 9. Serve hot beverages. Because it's cold as heck. 10. Listen to some Yuletide music. Maybe even listen to some folk African music. 11. This year, I found lavender in my neighbour's garden. I'll be using it for cleansing through burning, putting it as decor around my cake, and for the relaxing hot bath I'll be taking. You can do this with other herbs and spices for different effects. 12. Set up an altar. It can honestly be a glorified decorative spot. On mine there's a few tealight candles (for no. 4 and 5) as well as bigger candles (red, white, and green - which are associated with yule and winter). I also decorated using old branches of bottlebrush tree (those look cute), some flowering plants and evergreen branches. Having plants that may have berries or plants like vines are also nice. Anything that grows, looks good in winter, or stays green.

Seems like you will be having a very festive, fun, and busy Solstice! Don't forget to rest and reflect too. ;) Blessed be and enjoy! Keep any eye out for my Preparations Vlog, airing tomorrow, to see what I did...
