@@chuckh4077 Not as a villain, as, well, Napoleon isn't really a villain. He was an army leader who wanted to make his country great, spread the ideals of the French revolution, and off course, be very famous by doing that. He definitely had bad traits, and was quite egocentric, but I wouldn't say villainous intent was part of his character.

Yup! And without him and his character, this movie wouldn't have had the emotional impact it had.

Yeah that’s a pretty impactful scene actually… a sister slapping her brother for murdering their father - and a subject kissing the hand and acknowledging what is now the head of the “royal family”.

I wanted to say the same, Kamilla's English is quite good, including use of some colloquial and slang phrases.

It makes me wish I had been born to parents with different nationalities, so I could have grown learning multiple languages. It would have been so much easier learning a language as a child, rather than now, as an adult.

I agree with you. To a certain part the Emperor evolved that way from his childhood on. Marcus Aurelius was right, when he said, he failed as a father (probably due to not being home most of the time - but at war, and doing politics). Now, sure, not everything is the fathers fault. There also was evil in the emperor from the beginning. As far my estimations about psychopaths go, a psychopath can be molded quiet a bit, when the molding is from his early childhood on. In fact, i knew a quiet nice psychopath once (who happend to be a mathematician too). The thing is: he , by definition, was not able to feel with others. When his grandma died, everyone cried, and he was just saying ''what are you crying ? She was old - we knew she would die sooner or later'' ... He completely not understood, what this ''crying'' is all about .. he even did not understood, what he did wrong, when he said that. By the years though, he recognized, that he functions much better with people (or they with him), when he acts nice ; says the right words - and just dont go every time the path of ''his advantage'' ... I met him already, when he was on that right path. For him it was not an emotional path, but a rational path. More comparable with ''Spock'' . But still - he became likeable , because despite he was not able to ''feel'' with others, he understood the importance, of threating people nice. He understood that social behavior is benefitial and makes sense in general. Now, its very rare that psychopaths understand this by their own. Most of them need therapy. And its very rare, that they go in therapy , because they dont feel anything ''wrong'' with themself. Because: their life just works by manipulating others, or taking advantage of others, etc.. A lot of psychopaths actually are quiet pleased with themselfs. Its the people around them who suffer from that psychopath. That makes it almost impossible that a psychopath ever sees a need for a therapy. Thats also a reason, why the therapy should be begin in the early childhood of those people. And its recognizable for parents, when they have a psychopath child. But parents usually dont want to admit it, or just want to put more weight on the positive sides... like ''ok, he killed a bird.. but on the other hand, he cleans his room all by his own, and his grades in the school are good!'' - for instance. And if a parent ignores that - or even worse: enables it, by complimenting his child for his ''good strong sides'' , the child sees no reason to change - in fact: the child thinks: he is on the right path - and so psychopathic parts gets worse and worse. If that child also gets with the wrong friends together, the wrong circumstances, it can build a very dangerous criminal. But in the most cases it stays that kind of guy/woman, who we experience as bully - in school, and even in adult life , in the job, etc..

I'm excited about that movie. I'm glad watching Phoenix is playing this character. It won't matter that he's not 5 ft 2 like Napoleon since the average person doesn't understand Napoleon was extremely short. 5ft 4in is being very generous.

In defense to some of those reactors, they need to "prattle on" due to issues with copyright. They need to be commenting or they are just watching and will get that vid banned. There is a ratio of commenting and watching they need to maintain. There are of course reactors that take it beyond that and hard to watch.

Agree. Kamilla is one of those reactors that don't always keep talking constantly but rather focuses more on the movie trying to grasp the plot and the details.

She did miss the entire point of the film, however, which is a bit odd given how many times it was made clear in the dialogue.

@coolgareth101 - it is not much different now, especially in US, in some of the aspect of Roman Empire: 1. Marcus Aurelius was quite observant in his Meditations (recommended read), but plenty of other main philosophers before his time too, also regarding the fate of any empire 2. Nothing has change regarding Roman approach of "bread and circuses" - so as long as you keep people entertained (plenty on TV regarding that, especially sport - sort of like old games at the Coloseum), plus give them an "option" to have enough food (keep them feed), and give them a roof over their heads? Yeah, they are not gonna revolt, and rich will gets richer, and poor will gets poorer.

However, he vomited up the poison & his wrestling partner Narcissus was despatched to strangle him in his bath as he recovered. No return to a republic as suggested in the movie though, instead the anarchy of the Year of the Five Emperors ensued.

Correct. Had to buy the DVD to see these extra scenes. But the movie experience will always be superior to watching it at home. With the caveat that some people have really great home theaters, of course. But that's certainly not a majority.

A movie about Hannibal Barca would be great. However, I don't think audiences would really like the beginning, where his father Hamilcar makes him sacrifice a boy to Melqart and swear to destroy Rome.

The life expectancy of gladiators was something like 1.5 years. It was pretty brutal. It is true that the schools tried to limit mortality. (The gladiators were fatened up, and the weapons were not as lethal as they could be.) But in the end, it was trained dudes fighting each other in ways that could kill you. It was no joke.
