Are you an aspiring Midwife or Midwifery student? Want to talk to someone who's been there and now owns her own practice? I offer consults worldwide to discuss your career goals, steps for achieving them, and help with Midwifery school applications/personal statements. You can book your consult here: globalmidwife.youcanbook.me
A common question for those interested in the Midwifery field is whether to go the nursing route or to become a Midwife without nursing training. To be completely honest, I didn't decide to become a Midwife until I was already in nursing school, so becoming a Nurse Midwife was the next logical step. Originally, I planned to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, but when I fell in love with OB working as a doula, I shifted gears towards Midwifery.
Even if I wasn't already on the path to becoming a nurse when I decided to become a Midwife, I still would have chosen to become a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) as opposed to a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). Let's compare the two, and then I'll highlight the deciding factors that appealed to me.
This is the 32nd episode from my weekly series, "Wellness Wednesdays." On Wednesday's, I'll be dropping new content about Midwifery, women's health, and mental health.

It’s a tug of war between the two for me. I want to have my own practice and go more of the natural route but I love the range of abilities of CNM. What’s stopping me is age. I’d be starting from the beginning at age 28. By time all schooling is done I’ll be at least 36. With CPM I can be working by 32. I am stressed to make a decision!!

Lucy Blake i personally feel that being a CNM offers a lot more flexibility and opens more doors. I know CNM’s with thriving birth center or home birth practices. Do you already have a bachelor degree in something else? If so, you can often do a 1 year BSN program, then 2 years for your Master.

Start ! Don't worry about age you're still young and in my opinion 32 and 36 isn't too much of a difference :)

@@GlobalMidwife I was also concerned about my ability to open my own birth center/practice if I chose the CNM route! Hearing that there are CNMs who've achieved this makes me very happy. I want the well-roundedness and educational security of the CNM route but the autonomy of being a CPM was quite appealing. I also love the concept of natural, low-risk births done in the home or at a birthing center much more than being in a hospital all the time. That said, I do not mind a hospital birth from time to time; I just could not be conformed to that setting forever by any means. Would you say that it was difficult for those CNMs to open their own practices? It really didn't make sense to me while I was doing my research why a CNM wouldn't be able to have autonomy despite (according to some people) being more qualified than CPMs. I've heard that a CPM's education is highly dependent on whoever their apprenticeship is under and can be poor or highly competent, whereas CNMs have more rigor and concrete standing in how well they'll be educated because of the requirements placed on them. Do you find any of this information to be true? I'm only 18 and am on my way to obtaining my CNA certification upon graduating high school and completing all my exams. It's arguably pretty early for me to be asking these questions, but I'm 95% sure this is what I want to do in the future so any advice is much appreciated. Thank you so, so much for posting this video! You've helped many people : )

@@GlobalMidwife Thanks for your answer , I'm from Spain and here the process to become a nurse midwife is similar, first you have to do nursing (4years) and then take and exam and star midwife (2 years). I'm planing to move to USA with my husband and I have a question, to CNM, you have first to take NCLEX and then other exam? or only NCLEX? Thanks again
@GlobalMidwife

Judit Rincón you have to pass the NCLEX to have your RN license, then when you finish Midwifery school, you take the Midwife certification exam in order to qualify for your license.

Yes, CNM’s can open their own practice doing home births/birth center births in states that allow full practice. Most of your training will probably be in the hospital though unless you specifically seek out those type of clinical sites
