Being real vulnerable on the internet today and discussing one of my big struggles with mental health and the industry. I don't think I'm the only one with these experiences and feelings and I hope talking about them can remove some of the stigma and loneliness.

Mine is body jewelry too. I always spend too much on plugs. Every time I feel bad I buy plugs, when I’m happy I buy plugs and weights. When I “deserve” a treat I buy plugs and weights. When I’m driving home I always stop at the mail box and get the mail and it’s a let down when there’s no plugs in there.

i'm very sorry you went through this. as always, thank you for sharing your story and bringing into focus the hidden-away parts of the industry that us clients don't get to see, it's really opened my eyes on what to expect and look out for. it's really upsetting that mentors still deny their apprentices the right and dignity of getting paid and treated like an employee, i would never support a studio that participates in that. i hope you're having a wonderful time in washington!

I have 28 piercings. I love to see others wearing fancy stuff but I cant go back to spending my time, money and effort colour matching . I only wear rose gold plain titanium now. Its a kind of minimalist jewellery maximum piercing situation 😅.

Oh that might’ve been me - I commented once that I’d like to hear more about your shopping addiction cause I was going through it, too. Thank you so much for opening up & sharing! I’m finally getting a handle on my spending and you are right - finding happiness in other areas of my life has really helped. Also my piercer lowkey called me out lmao but it was a welcome wake up call! Idk anyone else who deals with this re: body jewelry so it was nice to hear your story. Always down to hear more, of course 💜

I went to you when you used to pierce down here in SoFL and stopped going after to that shop after you left. You are one of my favorite piercers and loved your energy! Sending you all my unwavering support and love 💕🫶🏻

I really relate to this- especially with like.. skimping out on necessary purchases to buy body jewelry. I would skip out on buying a new winter coat or replacing worn out sneakers... Or even buying better groceries to be able to buy body jewelry. As well, my addiction started through a low and traumatic part of my life. Thank you for shedding light on this, it's not talked about often enough

I also think the way piercers/tattooers are constantly being paid in inconsistent large amounts creates less structure. You always assume you’ll earn it back fast (which could be true or not!) and you don’t always have a set amount to expect/rely on (like a typical paycheck)

I came to this video expecting to learn about shopping addiction and came out of it being appalled by the abusive and inhumane relationship you had with your piercing "mentor." It´s ridiculous that anyone needs to learn a trade that way and there should be way more oversight and legislation when it comes to these type of apprenticeships. I´m so glad you got out of that and that you´re doing better now!

But Lynn, didn't any of your repeat clients recognize or suspect what was going on in the shop? Pass you a note, talk to you outside the back door of the shop or just call social services or even the state labor board? In your situation, buying sparkly stuff was one of the few things under your control.

Some of them actually did! Once of them has become one of my dearest friends, and she pulled me aside multiple times while I was there to say she didn’t like how he was talking to me or treating us. Others would bring me food as tips and such. I am forever grateful to the clients who did see some of what was going on and offered to help, but I also know that we did a really good job of hiding a lot of this at the studio. And many folks just assumed it was a bad day or work drama.

@@Lynn_Loheide Too many people observe something they know is wrong, but are afraid to intervene. Sad, because it sounds like you really needed an intervention or de-programming

Hi! Apologies if you’ve mentioned this in your other videos, but I was curious about your opinion on hourly paid piercing positions and your thoughts on this. I’m newer to the industry, and my apprenticeship was not run in that way, rather on a 60/40 scale. Do you have any advice? Or find that one is more common than the other? Thank you for all that you post and share insight on.

I thibk hourly and commission are equally common depending on the studio setup! Both can be ethical ways to be paid as long as they are set up correctly.
