Thanks for the video and filter sock primer. I have another use for filter socks, water changes. We were getting sand in the sink trap from the Python water changes. Solution, the Python sink adaptor drains into into a filter sock. We also have a BRS filter sock bracket mounted on a 5 gallon bucket for old style bucket water changes. In my experience the mesh socks clog quicker but are extremely easy to clean. They clog because of bacterial films and only having a single layer. On my tank mesh socks clog in 2-3 days, felt socks clog in 4-5 days.

I'm thinking about removing my socks and replacing with a roller fleece. Not sure I want those in my washing machine...lol

Ive always wondered weather hanging the filter sock in midair without touching the water Column in the sump, will it still be a nitrate factory after 4-5days ?as the waste matter isn’t suspended anymore in the water so there is no direct contact of the waste containing filter sock with the water, so it’s only deduced to the contact of the water coming from the display,without directly polluting the water, what is your thoughts on it !

The water will still be running over the decaying matter, so it probably won't have the effect that you're looking for. Not to mention, it could be pretty smelly setting it up this way.

What about mesh filter socks? How often would you replace them?

Mesh filter socks don't hold up quite as well to cleaning from a durability standpoint. Even so, you should be able to get quite a few washes and re-uses out of them if you clean then gently. I don't recommend putting mesh socks in a washing machine.

Also, I see a shrimp in the filter sock section a 3:22, is there a reason why it's there/purpose?

Not sure, but my son’s tank got snails from a plant purchase. No we remove them with water changes to a hose in a filter sock. So our socks have snails ! Happy Thanksgiving, Jim

We had a few peppermint shrimp in the sump back when we were dealing with aiptasia in the BRS160. That one went a little rogue!

Best solution, use reefmat, get rid of these socks But experts pls chime in, any benefits of using filter sock over reefmat? apart from cost

i think you missed the 'change out the sock' question. Not, how often to clean, but how often to replace the physical sock(wear and tear) after X number of weeks. How many washes does it take to degrade the filter sock?

That's gonna vary based on a lot of things, how often you're washing them, what type of washer you use, how gentle or not it's heavy duty cycle is, how good of quality the sock is, etc. I've had socks only last a few washings before falling apart, and I've others I've been using for over 5 years. I just throw them away when they start falling apart.

@DaiMasters has great advice. Ultimately, it's going to need replacing when it starts to fall apart or has holes. In most cases, filter socks can be washed dozens of times and reused.
