I use diy draw string filter socks and I boil all new filter socks in hot water for 5 minutes to remove the factory finish of the fabric then wash them under cold water to stop it from cooking.

I was told quite a while ago by one saltwater aquarium service person (he wasn't working for me) that for the same reason you soak/rinse your brand new filter socks in water change tank water or RO/DI water just before using them, you should do that with re-used ones after washing them out in tap water. I use a high pressure hose to wash mine and I live in L.A. where the tap water is not just filled with chloramines, but probably also has a bunch of phosphates and/or silicates in it. It seemed to me that the aquarium service person's advice made sense considering that some of those particulates could likely be left in the washed sock after it dries. So when I do a water change, I use that water in my buckets to soak my re-used filter sock and I even wring it out rather thoroughly before putting it in my sump. It's interesting but I have only heard of one or two others on forums who also do something similar.

You do have a point here; contaminants from your tap water can make it into your tank via a filter sock. This is in very small amounts and rinsing with RO/DI water prior to use is a good practice. Rinsing in tank water will certainly work but then again could also transfer dissolved organic waste. Personally, I just rinse them with RO water before going into the tank whether it is a brand new sock or a used one. While this extra step is a great preventative measure, I think the reality is that most of us just get the socks clean and let them dry out before going into the tank. Sort of the same concept for cleaning pumps and rinsing out your skimmer cup, best practice is to rinse in RO/DI water but not all of us do so because of the minimal risk. Rinsing brand new socks is very important because they have residue left over from manufacturing that tends to foam up in your tank and cause the skimmer to overflow if not rinsed thoroughly. Add the thin nylon mesh sock inside these and then that sifts out algae and other fine stuff that gets trapped in the cloth filter. Keeps them a lot cleaner longer. You can wash those thin mesh easily by hand fast.

I use hydrogen peroxide at about 5 percent. and it keeps them clean and white. it is also known to denature organics.

All of my past salt water aquariums have used other filters along with bio balls. I have a new setup and am dealing with filter socks for the first time. So, I was just tossing them out when were no longer filtering the water. How many times can you reuse them before you have to replace them?

If you're gonna use the bleach method just change your socks every two days I was actually looking up something else but I never let my socks get bad enough to the point I have to turn them inside out once they start to get discolored that's a sign enough for my lazy meter to wash them

Michael Russo theiling roller mat, or none at all just good skimming. Also if your looking for clear water a BRS reactor with ROX carbon is great too.

Filter socks are mechanical filtration so anything that is going to remove physical particles from the water will help. Plastic sponges, filter floss and filter pads are all acceptable forms of mechanical filtration. While you may not see any immediate effects, the particulates will surely build up over time and contribute to organic waste levels in your tank in the long term. Having said that, if you are having success without...why fix what is not broken. :) Thanks for watching!

@@BulkReefSupply I agree what you said, so if the particles built over time will increase nitrates right?
@KolkataMarineHobbyist
@KolkataMarineHobbyist 3 жыл бұрын
@@JosephKarthic Yes If you give thr particles to build up , it will eventually break down from organic form to inorganic compounds like nitrate phosphate So more often you change your mechanical filtration or Perform kore aquarium cleaning or use bacteria for eating organic waste , less nitrate and phosphate will be produced .

I saw you washed your filter socks in an upright washing machine. These fill up with water completely each time. Have you tried washing them in a side-load or low-water-use machine?
@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 6 жыл бұрын
You know, I have not really tested or tried in different style machines. I imagine that may have some effect but if it gets your clothes clean, it probably would be fine for the filter socks. -Robert @ MD

Well, after a couple months washing they seem to be holding up. I was most concerned about the extra banging on metal causing the filter material to separate from the plastic shape/ frame part but so far mine haven't come apart.

Good lord guys! I would never put my poopy fish socks in a public washing machine! Also you talk about using a pressure washer & show a guy holding the sock with his fingers. Never do that with a real high pressure washer. Good way to lose fingers.
