Ideal to use a small electric vacuum pump (Harbor Freight) with an intermediate sealed plastic jug like they sell with the Harbor Freight hand vacuum pump. May want to do it 3-5 times if the reservoir and top end are black/sludgy still. May also want to put 3-5 ounces of Archoil in the top end to help it stay clean as well. Can do that with one of the fills he showed.

To all the 7.3 bros... I bus mechanic who works on these daily siggested the following.. Perform oil and filter change first... Remove oil from hpop... While tge hpop is empty... Put a magnet through it to check for metal shavings Then fill hoop with .75 quart of MMO or stiction eliminator.. He said to perform this 2 times per year

Just from my experience. Power stroke help said to change the upper oil 3x at each oil change. Meaning such it out replace. Run. Repeat. I striped the plug for the hpop reservoir. Had to wait to change it after I changed the regular oil. 75 to 100 miles later changed it. Dip stick oil is pristine. Did the upper 5x. Yes 5x and was still jet black. I have 1100 miles on my last oil change
@GrowingPains9176 ай бұрын
Is there an easy way to change it 3-5times? Do you add oil to the Hpop after you suck it out?
@brianturck2742 жыл бұрын
Just going to make this very simple... the only oil that is not circulated through the system, is the high pressurized oil, in the lines going to injectors... there is no return for that oil... everything else does eventually goes through the engines oil filter... the hpop tank can only hold a limited amount of oil.. and if you are taking out 1 quart of oil and adding three back, use your head the additional oil is heading to the oil pan... period.. you can't over fill the hpop, but you can overfill your engine oil by adding to much to the hpop...
@robertkwiatkoski12926 ай бұрын
if reference to my poast, i take the 1 quart out 3 times. I'm not a mechanic by any means but i can swear that I've done this many times and the upper oil in the reservoir and rails remains BLACK even after running the vehicle 75-100 miles after just changing the lower. I stripped the plug and had to wait for the parts. Thus I'm a believer in changing it.

First, what you referred to, as the HPOP is merely a reservoir that holds oil for the high demand part of the starting procedure. The HPOP is under the fuel bowl reservoir. This oil circulates once it's sent to the injectors just like all the other oil. There is a debate about the value of changing it; however my opinion is, getting the most bad out before putting the good back in has to be a bonus. It should not effect the starting, if you have kept to a reasonable schedule of changing your oil. I think particles settle out of the oil and to the bottom of the tank every night when it sits. So that may be why it seems dirtier than the bulk oil.
@NoName-tz5ji2 жыл бұрын
If you’re going to change the hpop reservoir oil at least do it for the right reason (to get all the old oil out of the engine) and do it the right way.( three times in a row idling five minutes in between). And any fool who thinks it don’t circulate needs to ask why trucks injectors and pump lasts here hundred of thousands of miles.
@michaelatkinson38714 күн бұрын
I agree. you can do that as part of a regular oil change to get more new oil in the system. Doing this without an oil change is a waste of time.

There’s no such thing as hpop oil people. Its the same oil that’s in the pan. Anyone else that tells you different doesn’t know shit about that engine. Oil goes from the pickup to the hpop reservoir to the hpop, comes out high pressure to the heads than to the injectors and out the injectors back to the pan

Do not use a plastic line to stick in there. Use a small steel brake line. Any pieces of plastic and bam, shit get stuck in injector. Also the solenoids on top of your injectors lose clearance. They make a shim kit for this.Incase this dont work. Also the O rings can go bad and cause low HPOP pressure. I bought mine new. And 4 years the thing wouldn't start when cold. Change the top HPOP oil and It starts in -10F no problem.

The cause of the hard start is oil leak down. Replace your low pressure oil pump and you will solve the problem. After that consider replacing the hpop. It's not difficult. You can do the low pressure oil pump for $100 or less in a couple hours if you're as skilled as I think you are.
@michaelatkinson38714 күн бұрын
Yes, this is a controversial topic. If you know that the low-pres pump feeds the high-pressure reservoir to the high-pressure pump to the injectors and then into the top of the heads. Doing this has no effect except to change some oil in the top.
