It's funny after all these years I can't believe you guys at "Nostalgia Critic" have not touched - The Land Before Time. One of the biggest punch to your gut/ nostalgic movies of all time. That's a really good question. I guess the original is seen as so good that it doesn't quite meet the original scope of the channel - making fun of bad movies. Then again, he's had episodes featuring bad sequels to great movies from the start, so ... yeah, I agree with you there. What puzzles me the most is that he has never reviewed MacGyver. It was released during what the channel originally defined as the "cutoff period" of 1980-1997 or so, Doug has repeatedly talked about it off-hand so he knows what it's about, and the show *really* isn't as good as you might remember it to be. There even was a movie. It really was the sort of series someone else should remember so you wouldn't have to.

Yeah I’d be interested to see him review the sequels because I do think there’s some decent stuff there. About the point about Star Wars potentially sliding into mediocrity at the end of the Rogue One review: After the divisivness of episode 8, the slapdash thing that was episode 9, and the relative return to form that was The Mandalorian. Star Wars definitely stuck to the script of "it's either awful or pretty good."
@Terminalsanity
@Terminalsanity 2 жыл бұрын
The thing that worked with Force Awakens is at the end it left a foundation to take the series in any direction... and then The Last Jedi wiped the slate clean again instead of building off of what was established, retroactively negating the most effective aspect of TFA. Which left TRoS having to desperately scrap together a climax out of 100% nostalgia with no narrative gas in the tank. Bottom line they needed to establish and stick to rough outline instead of winging it from film to film.

The sequels made me realize that the prequels did one thing very right: Iconography. Have a look at any character, ship, or location from the prequels, and you can immediately tell "That's from the Star Wars prequels". In the sequel, everything looks and feels too much like the original trilogy, maybe with an extra stripe of red paint. There are Stormtroopers flying TIE fighters against "rebel" X-wings, there are AT-AT-like walkers, Star Destroyers, Imperial guards, Luke, Leia, Han ... but nothing that really looks original or new. Even the new characters had to share the screen with characters we already knew, giving less time to set up anybody. It's like the sequels leaned way too hard on the visual identity consumers were already familiar with, neglecting to make something unique for their own. Oh, and at least the prequels had some sort of overarching story that was thought out before they started filming.

I guess being self-contained made it possible for the writers to create a script with a beginning, middle, and end, and then go back and fix things at the beginning if something didn't turn out right towards the end, and only start filming once it was written. The sequels had no overarching plan, and it shows. Episode 9 in particular was doomed from the onset. Episode 7 was too self-contained and didn't bother with a setup, and Episode 8 neglected what little setup there was, and left nothing to build upon. When you're building a house and the foundations are crooked, and the walls are even more crooked, the roof will also be crooked no matter what.

@@BlazerK1914 I disagree, I think the force awakens is more forgettable and less watchable than the prequels. I would be lying if I say the prequels were great films but in spite of the bad dialogue(u should hear Riverdale's dialogue), outdated cgi , clunky writing and boring political stuff(actually the best part imo since it involves Palpatine's rise to power) which btw is still better than the intersectionality politics Disney tried to shove in the sequels especially the last jedi, it was still at least very original, showed an interesting world of Star Wars, no forced down awkward fan services, and deep down tell a fundamentally good story with the fall of the jedi, the rise of the Sith and Anakin's rise to power and fall to the dark side being an actually a good piece of character work. It also ends in a bloodbath in episode 3 where a lot of characters die, the heroes lose and the villain wins and is left with a bittersweet moment that one day a new hope with arise from the ashes of the fallen. The force awakens, like the rest of the sequels, was doomed from the start especially with the opening credits showing a terrible world building that basically sets the world back to ANH despite being a sequel. If this film were made by another studio it would automatically be reprimanded for plagiarism but I guess disney can get away with it.

Rogue One also made a really good show of how vulnerable the Rebels were. It showed they had the resources to fight a space battle, but only for a short while and only if everybody committed to it - and the Council was full of disagreeing voices. There was enough of a Rebel Alliance that Luke could join an established fighter wing, but you really got the impression that it was not much more than that either. Every ship counted, and the Empire had a comfortable upper hand. But still, the Empire had only one Death Star too, and it would be a major setback for them to lose it given the amount of resources was spent on it. The sequels didn't manage to create the same framework for the story. We never got the impression how strong the First Order were, or how many they were fighting, or what the rest of the Galaxy was thinking about their conquest. Losing Starkiller Base didn't seem to affect them in any meaningful way, nor losing a Dreadnought or Snoke or his flagship - they just carried on as usual as if their losses were irrelevant. That makes it harder to get a grasp of what the Rebels were trying to achieve or whether their effort made a difference. Imagine Lord of the Rings beginning with "Sauron had 172 Master Rings, and now the Fellowship is sent on a quest to destroy one of them. We don't know where the 171 others are". Doesn't make much of a difference whether they succeed or fail now, does it? Rogue One managed to convey and sell a story with believable stakes. The sequels ... really didn't.

@@Codraroll Just look at when we introduced to the main character in both films. We first see Jyn in a prison cell. She is dirty. Her will is broken. Her face conveys that she has been through a ton of horrible things in her life. Such as killing those who are innocent and being seriously taken advantage of. The greatness of that introduction is that I can go ahead and imagine whatever I want to have happened to her. The film leaves it to me to decide. But the film conveys very clearly that this little girl who is now an adult has seen and been in horrible things. Both to her and things that she's done to others. It is a perfect example of film showing us about a character rather than resorting to telling us about the character. If a film need not tell us, it shouldn't whenever it can simply show us instead. I don't need any backstory or voice over when we go from Jyn being a child to becoming an adult. The visuals tell me everything I need to know. Compare this to the fist image of Rey that we see. Rey is alone. However every hair on her head is perfectly placed like it would be for a princess. Her skin is untouchably perfect. Rey's body is perfect. Rey has a weapon and is well versed in using it. As good in it as a trained soldier would be. Then we are told that Rey is basically a slave or at best a share cropper...and what??? These two ideas conflict with each other. If Rey is a slave/sharecropper she wouldn't look like she does and she wouldn't be allowed to have a weapon she can use on whomever without suffering punishment. Her skin would be darkened significantly with a serious tan. she should be suffering serious skin damage as a result of so many sun burns (she's not Luke who has a a home, technology to live comfortably on his desert planet) She would be dirty as she lives in a desert with little water and she has no real home to speak of. She would be scrawny as I get up because she would barely have enough food to feed herself daily. But Rey has a perfectly toned body. You couldn't achieve that so easily as a slave/sharecropper. She is as white as Snow White. Which is impossible in a desert. So the images we see of the protagonist in each film is all the difference needed to tell which is a good film and which is a bad film. The appearance of the character has to fit their situation. In Rogue One it does perfectly. In Force Awakens it fails miserably. I believe in less than a second that Jyn has had a rough life. In no way does what I see in Rey fit what her life would be like if she really lived it. Consequently I don't believe in the universe in Force Awakens anywhere near as I do Rogue One. Believability is everything in sci fi. Good sci fi will make you believe its real. If if fails, it isn't good sci fi (if it was trying to be realistic).

@@akmal94ibrahim yes I agree. Rogue One shows how an inferior group of terrorists (not rebels!) would have to fight to defeat the Empire. The difference between terrorists and rebels is important in a film. Rebels only do good things to achieve a good ending. Terrorists would do anything to achieve their good ending. If the Rebels only did good things and behaved like Boy Scouts they would have been stomped out by the superior Empire in a heartbeat.

The other movies were not perfect by any means but they weren't terrible. They weren't a lazy paint by numbers non interesting film that just tried to please everyone while ultimately failing it's own characters. And watching the reviews just shows that, and reliving the hype in 2015 just to be so let down by 2019 leaves a bitter taste. The Last Jedi is what gave us RoS. Seriously That film was a narrative void: Snoke, Phasma, even Luke all thoughtlessly snuffed out to little narrative impact. Kylo and Hux reduced to bumbling jokes, Rey was rendered even more of a blank slate, Fin and Poe were left spinning in their wheels while the Resistance was literally going to have to rebuild from scratch. There almost no narrative forward momentum going into RoS. Contrast that with end of TESB where you had the setup Han Solo's rescue and and a final confrontation with Luke and Vader with a whole new context to consider. I mean I don't envy JJ having to salvage that shipwreck what could he do? Too late to make Kylo and Hux into credible villains, too late to make satisfying character arcs for Rey, Fin and Poe. All he could do is going back into the nostalgia well again but the good will that could bring in was spent in TFA. There was just so little to work with.

@@Terminalsanity Not necessarily. I think the blame goes more to Disney/Lucasfim's lack of confidence on Trevarrow's treatment for episode IX, a lot of ideas and concepts from his vision really fed off the Last Jedi. There weren't any real retcons, and even sounded like they were giving better ideas for concluding Rey's arc. They felt the backlash was too great from TLJ, that it really felt like they needed JJ for "damage control". It's a classic case of trying to please everybody, but ended up pleasing nobody. They should've just maintained the confidence to let Trevarrow take the helm - it certainly would've helped to the Sequels to truly feel like their own thing. Hell, we would've even got a major prequel/clone wars reference.

You'd also think the effort would drive you unconscious first, before it kills you- as 'getting knocked out by over-extending the force' has been used before. But it does open up a logic hole- Why didn't the emperor just do that instead? He's older then luke, and stronger overall it seems, the guy could kill fleets with space lightning. Though it is true Palpy could just have. Not used it because it probably makes you real weak afterwords. When killing entire fleets with force lightning doesn't kill you, why would making yourself appear somewhere else do it?

Yes, that is the problem with constantly throwing new Force Powers into the mix and just accepting that to be the norm, it opens up previously existing stuff to an infinite amount of "what if" questions, so you got to be extremely careful or you do dumb things like making your main character bring somebody back from the dead which was the entire reason for Anaking Skywalker to turn into Darth Vader and Rey can just nilly willy do that instinctively. Astral projection? sure why not... but over hundreds of lightyears? ...is the force faster than light now? does it connect things through hyperspace? ...Luke didn't even know where Rey flew off to... how did Luke end up on the right planet to begin with? Did he look for Leia through hyperspace force stuff? ...this is getting awfully stretchy the more i think about it.

It would work as power limiter, for story telling perspective. Sith on the other hand having all sort weird powers which also turn them into disfigured abomination which are only keept alive by their refusal to die and in constant agony does also work in the same way. It could be that. Luke just kind of died there- just a quick scene of the projection disappearing and him fading away i.e. Yoda. I don't mind new powers, I just want them to line up with the old ones- Hell I was all for basilia's jedi battle meditation. Because it worked well with the emperor having a constant influence on his empire much the same way. Or when Thrawn does it- Hell [apologies for the second curse] I'm more disapointed in what they did to luke- the wealth of things he did after, the jedi academy, dueling against thrawn- It just seems that they killed Luke to get rid of him rather than anything else- and they did it poorly. I wouldn't be against him dying in the movies admittedly but. You could have gotten a similar effect with a high tier hologram without needing to sacrifice luke sky walker- guy who regularly beat the shit out of worse odds in the comics, movies, games, books. While it's true that he's old- several key people in the pantheon are already insanely old and it seems jedi and sith age more like a wine than everyone else. Sorry for the wall of text, but in short- New powers? Fine, powers killing you? Sounds like a dark side power at best, a sort of lich deal maybe. There's a Lego holiday special done by Disney just FYI. But I remember hearing a rumor once that Boyega claimed he was asked to reprise his role as Finn for chapters 10 - 13 but refused because of how he was treated while filming the movies. Supposedly the next set of trilogy was going to make him a Jedi and the force awakens was just setting him up to be. And that 7 through 9 was always focused on Rey. But honestly; Finn being related to Mace Windu would be a great idea. Disney could reintroduce Windu in other live action format since Sam Jackson has been in constant talks to reprise his role. I'd actually enjoy a Mace Windu show or movie. And honestly; Diisney really needs to move past chapters 1 through 6. Star wars has so must lore that would give the franchise a breath of fresh air like using Revan. Show how the rule of 2 became important. I'd love to see a live action movie exploring why the G1 lightsaber was built in the 1st place. Thankfully star wars is about to explore the high republic era. And would the father, daughter, and the son be concidered the Gods of the star wars universe? They are referenced in old Jedi temples. Although seeing a Lothal wolf in the Asohka show would be interesting.

I love how this channel likes to dog on the sequels yet they're just as responsible for the sequels as channels like RLM and Chris Stuckmann

@@sauvezlesbebesporgs5561 prequels are at least entertaining for how dumb they are. Pod racing, Darth Maul duel, Anakin jumping down throughout the city, clone wars, gladiator fight, space scene in the beginning of 3, Obi wan vs Anakin. Tons of great moments. Sequels are boring and political

@@hajime5486 totally subjective, you can think what you want but I least, even if prequel are more exciting, I find sequel very entertaining with a lot of crazy scenes too. And I don’t care if this is politicals, a lot of people like prequels because they are politicals so why sequel cannot do same thing (and do it better)

while the framing devices have always bugged me for these, rewatching the sequels, reevaluating them, and than watching these. I have to give points to doug for clearly paying attention and considering stuff. It sounds patronizing but it feels like most of the star wars fanbase didn't. It feels like most people especially the people who hate it (and I'll hold my hand up because I fell into some of these) either just stright up ignored stuff, misremembered stuff or took moments without the context. A prime example for me, is everyone (this is one I did as well) is yelling about rey being a mary sue. But upon watching the movies, she does have a personality, she does fail and she's honestly really fun. The problem is that in 8 she gets sidelined and in 9 its jumping around like someone who slammed back a gallon of coffee and ten pounds of sugar, so as a result she only gets a few scarce moments to show it. Hell I would argue much more that EU luke is much more of a gary stue with how he's the strongest character evah. Another is luke "trying to kill kylo because of a bad dream" people forget that visions are a big thing is star wars and tend to be right. And luke got a vision that his nephew was going to become the next vader. Luke has aso shown bouts of the darkside so him having the moment he does is not out of character for him. But doug also gets something right that everyone else forgets. He didn't go through with it. It was a single moment, it was gone as quickly as it had arrived but the consequences were already done. Everyone forgets this and talks about the moment like luke really did try to kill ben, but he didn't. There's also all the shit about 7 just being a new hope 2, and doug hits the nail on the head. Sometimes to tell a new story you have to tell an old one first, and star wars has always gone back to the well of a new hope. Than with 9, yeah, TLJ nuked every plotline and than poor JJ (even if I don't have any feelings for him as a director I feel bad for the hate he gets for stuff that really wasn't up to him) having to back track and try to fix a sinking ship that was already half way underwater . Let's be honest, with everything that happened TROSW was always going to be garbage. I respect doug for being more open minded and genuinely realizing these points while most of the fanbase just screamed and bitched about everything. It's clear he was actually paying attention unlike a lot of people

For me, it was a 6/10 at best. Underdeveloped and forgettable characters, a jumbled narrative with some odd editing choices, a slow pace that eventually builds to a sensational third act with amazing action, spectacle and a heart-pounding ending. Just because the last third was great doesn’t make up for the first two acts which were a bit of a slog.

Honestly the thing that pisses me off is that Disney had plenty of great EU content to work with and more than enough money to get rights to all of it if they needed to. They could have adapted some amazing stories to the big screen. Hell they COULD have written Dark Forces into a movie instead of making whatever the hell Rogue One was. I will never understand why they decided to retcon decades of solid lore in favor of the bland corporate secretions they ended up sneezing out.
