One of Doug's favorite holiday classics is given a closer look. Why is this so much better than everything else that has the Grinch's name? Let's take a look at How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (also known as Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!) is a 1966 television special directed and co-produced by Chuck Jones. It is based on the 1957 children's book of the same name by Dr. Seuss, the story of the Grinch trying to take away Christmas from the townsfolk of Whoville below his mountain hideaway.

For the record, I am indeed here when the website owned by the technology conglomerate, Google, known as KZfaq, decided that the little image that appears on a video appearing on one's recommended videos section known as a thumbnail, was removed from the video, however, the video itself is still fine, which in my opinion, is fairly humerous.

I grew up watching this every Christmas, despite being born a year or two before the Jim Carry came out, and I honestly don’t remember what my first time watching it was like. What I do know it it’s my favorite Christmas movie along with Christmas Story! I remember as a child just absolutely loving the story so much, although I didn’t really understand till I got older why the Grinch didn’t like Christmas to the point he felt like he needed to steal it. Especially when my parents said they like the movie because the grinch was relatable. I always wondered why he didn’t get headphones or earplugs lol

I actually do remember the first time I watched it - it was a few days before my family and I went to see the Jim Carrey film and felt kinda reluctant about it so I checked out the cartoon. I got it a video store and my brother and I watched it and I fell in love with it, mainly its theme song. When I went to go and see the Jim Carrey Movie, I ended up loving that more than the cartoon and when Jim Carrey started to sing 'You're a mean one' I think that was my first official fan freak-out! We watch it every Christmas, I happen to be one of the few fans who likes all versions of the Grinch. Except for the live show version, I haven't seen that yet.

@SingeScorcher
@SingeScorcher 3 жыл бұрын
That really is one of the bigger core issues with the two feature films. In both of Universal's adaptations the Whos are so obsessed with the capitalistic side of Christmas that they become insufferable. You want the Grinch to steal it from them, they don't deserve it. It also results in the lesson being forced down your throat. Because apparently people are too stupid to see characters being a good example and learning from it.

I find it weird that people prefer the Who's being an entire race of Mary Sues who are perfect and don't have to learn a lesson (that also happens to help fill a theatrical run time) instead of being fleshed out and relatable like being bummed out that all your stuff is gone, but you still have each other and that's what truly counts. It was fine for a 22 minute TV special but for a whole movie, if the Who's had nothing to add other then being a plot device then most would see that as lazy writing.

I think one of the biggest reasons this is such a good rendition of the story is Dr Seuss. As you mentioned, the author consulted with him to see how to develop it correctly. In the recent versions, it feels like they said, “add goofy things that makes no sense because it’s doctor Seuss.” It’s kind of similar to how playhouses always have to portray Shakespeare plays as serious as possible.

Honestly I feel the Jim Carrey version would have been better if the focus was just Cindy showing how nice Christmas is and the Grinch just not buying it to the point he does steal it. Some of the extra elements like the disgruntled town, the mayor, the girlfriend, and the backstory do feel more unnecessary as Doug mentioned and it would have probably been more impactful if the Town already knew the meaning and the Relationship with Cindy was the focus, especially since that was the best addition to the story the film had and made for the best interactions with her genuine innocence vs the Grinch’s relatable bitterness

Thank you for this beautiful review Doug! Along with you, I've never been satisfied with any other adaptation of the Grinch for a multitude of reasons. But something I never quite put together that you pointed out here is that the Who's never questioned where everything went, they were just so overjoyed to celebrate Christmas and everything it is that they didn't even think twice. Hearing that in your review actually brought me to tears. The Grinch was my grandma's favorite Christmas movie and it was something that we always shared together and so it always reminds me of her. I always love your reviews but I have been anticipating hearing you talk about the actually GOOD Grinch, and I was not dissapointed!

I love how they don’t explicitly tell you “the reason” why the grinch hates Christmas. Yes they sorta explain that he doesn’t like the noise, but in the movies, THEY SHOW AND TELL YOU THE REASON, so it’s kinda false advertising when they say “so what ever the reason”, it’s like YOU JUST TOLD US THE REASON!!!! Not this cartoon though. That’s why this is a timeless and endless classic

when I was little. (NO IM NOT A LITTLE KID MY PFP IS ONE I TOOK IN 4TH GRADE) I always wondered what they thought when everything was gone and what made them decide to go out and sing. It never really crossed my mind that they actually didn't even notice. And did Cindy Lou know it was the Grinch and just didn't tell because she knew we would come back? It always confused me
@sarahsims6164
@sarahsims6164 3 жыл бұрын
I always assumed that Cindy (both in the book and the original cartoon) was too young to know who he was; considering he supposedly never really left his cave, chances are that she either didn't know what he looked like or was never told about him because everyone in Whoville probably didn't remember him either. On an unrelated note, why did the Grinch steal this video's thumbnail? Did KZfaq hold Max for ransom until he went through with it?

@user-ln4gd6hx7e

Favorite part: Always the climax where he runs up and saves the sled after finding his inner strength at the last minute. You just spend the whole short despising this charecter and thinking the grinch is such an asshole then in an instant so much humanity and courage and goodness comes out of him, it's just one of the most inspiring things I've ever seen. The big reveal: Well, guess I wasn't as shrewd a child as yourself Doug. Yeah, it was a huge surprise initially. I did not grow up in a religious household so all I associated with Christmas day was the presents under the tree and how great it felt, so the idea of waking up to find everything gone was probably my second worst nightmare after being trapped in a cage on the bottom of the ocean with a tiger....true story. Anyway, knowing how upset I would personally be it was unthinkable at first that the Who's wouldn't wake up the next morning and loose their shit over what had happened. But anyway, seeing how they ultimately reacted gave me so much more awareness and appreciation about the spiritual significance of Chritmas, far beyond the consumer element I had only appreciated beforehand so all was good I suppose.

The original Grinch cartoon is one of my all-time favorites! Part of what I love about it is that it's about the REAL spirit of Christmas. I've seen it almost every year since it first aired. I still get a leap in my heart and my eyes get moist when the star rises from the circle of Whos. (I even recorded the Grinch song on my younger brother's and my childhood reel to reel tape recorder back when one was stuck with whatever channel and time the networks showed things.)
