Finally, we get to the creation of the titular Silmarils. Melkor makes a move for them; and Fëanor, scion of the Noldor ... starts losing his mind.

I also forgot to include one of the artwork captions in the video. The image of Melkor appearing as a thundercloud (at 20:30) is by Stefan Meisl.

@@BeckyYork Oh, for sure. Eru was the only one who understands all of the themes of the music and understood what was to come in the later ages. Melkor's presence "mars" Arda (like the fall of man), and Eru's plan is a corrective one. For their part, Manwë and the Valar know some things that are coming, but certainly not everything.

Feanor basically telling Melkor to GTFO and slamming the door in his face is if not one of the bravest things anyone has ever done in the history of Arda

Fingolfin is easily my favorite character in The Silmarillion. My favorite passage involving him is far in the future, but this chapter definitely laid a strong foundation for a great Elf.

I’ve read The Silmarillion twice so far, but it’s been a while and it’s hard to remember the vast number of characters. But I get it, Fingolfin seems like one with honour!

The fact that it is the light of the trees that is to be preserved instead of stars or sea given the push-pull relationship emphasized until now seemed curious to me. But it also makes me wonder how glorious those forests were. I remember passing the part of her hair in my first pass and snickered about Gimli being superior to this master craftsmen. If only he knew. I'm not sure he would have ever given up the bragging rights. I admire Fingolfin and Finarfin also for 'taking the high road' when their brother obviously received preferential attention from their father instead of letting that fuel jealousy. I also need to thank you for enlightening us to the further expanded universe. Also, featuring guests as you have is one of the most ingenious and impressive inclusion of talent and method of promoting fellow creators. I think others should take a page from your book if only for the amusement factor alone. You also manage to put in the most stunning artwork with every installment. I am in love with the shield work and waves on the Celeborn portrait. And the perspective on the Kinslaying one is breathtaking. The detailing on The Hunt is also insanely impressive. Color me envious. No pun intended.

First Timer users ... prepare yourself for well Tradgy if I were to say it kindly. Excellent video dude, I was just tackling one video a day so I don't overwhelm myself with information. Now I have to wait for the weekly grind ... algoods quality takes time. I read the Silmarillion this year without this guide ( used others) got to say newcomers will have a raw deal using this as a companion. But also revisiting these events makes you think DAMN that's what actually happened, or subtly of Tolkien writing that's hard to decipher in first reads and look at it objectively.

For me, this era of Arda is the most heartbreaking. I wonder, was it all Melkor’s doing? Could there have ever been a similar conflict with the Noldor and the Valar without him? I suppose it was all fated as mentioned below... Sad times.

It's the fall of the Eldar... the point at which everything starts going wrong. I find the narrative switches tone a little in this one too (and continues through the next two chapters). It becomes a lot more tangible and immediate, and slightly less cerebral and distanced. Tragedy and loss is woven through the whole narrative, and is prevalent in the Great Tales, later on.

@@Labyrinth1010 You mean since their awakening at Cuiviénen?! The Silmarillion doesn't tell you many dates, but The Annals of Aman (published in Morgoth's Ring) has it at 400 Valian Years, between when Varda raises the Valacirca (The Plough, or Big Dipper if you're an American) and the completion of the Silmarils. Which is a little under two millennia, in Years of the Sun.

Feanor, who had asked thrice for just a single strand of Galadriel’s hair, was denied each time. However Gimli, a mere dwarf, asked only once and was given three strands of hair. Gimli then preserves the hair in a jewel that he passes down as a heirloom. I’d say it’s safe to assume that this jewel was just as, or even more beautiful, than the Silmarills

Question: Since Melkor has a part of all knowledge of the Valar, would that imply that ALL of his knowledge was incomplete, and perhaps even substantially less in any single category, overall, than most of the Valar, even though powerful and still beyond even Maiar?

It says it's been 3 months since the last video posted. Do you know when the next chapter will be posted? I'm on I think ch21, the one with Turin. Still working thru it but I've been waiting for your videos to catch up because they help me so much. I think I asked several months back and new videos have been added since but the channel isn't yet caught up to where I've stopped in the book.

When varda says "no mortal flesh" does she mean the coming edain/men? Kinda weird that she feels the need to add that or maybe I'm reading too into this, great video by the way.

First time reading but I still see Feanor as redeemable here, he turns Melkor away, albeit for the wrong reasons but he still turns him down. I just hope his father speaks some sense into him! It’s almost like his father doesn’t care.
