Thingol must have been a pretty OK dude from the very beginning. He inspired such loyalty in some of his people that they decided to forgo seeing the Two Trees in order to find him.

He also ditched 'em all for a strange broad in the forest while they were on the greatest quest given to them by the Gods. Not cool man.

@@thekiatty6953 Just because of a spell caused by Melian to lured Elwe a.k.a Elu into the forest stucked together till 200 years later. The spell broked and Elu and Melian became the royals of the forest kingdom Doriath. He also allowed his clan to go to Aman as they wishes. No force happened to them.

@@thekiatty6953 Also don't forget Olwe (Brother of Elu and grandfather of Galadriel) took the leadership of the Teleri clan. Half the majority of the Teleri almost reached Aman. They Tol Eressea (Former Boat Island) became their kingdom. Later the Teleri were attracted from the light of Valinor and they wanted to go there. Till later a Maia of the sea and servant of Ulmo - Osse (Teacher later patron to the - Befriended them and taught them how to build ships. The Teleri learned, built and mastered to manned the ships. The ships finally reached Aman. The Teleri and the Noldor meet each other after landing and they begin building a 2nd city - 2nd home. They made the magnificent city of Alqualonde meaning "Swanhaven" and became the new capital of the Teleri high elves. Now the seafearer Teleri will call themselves the Falmari (Sea Elves) as we know them from Aman.

It really is kind of insanely awesome that Tolkien pretty much made all of this, just to give a the languages he created a proper story for how they came to be what they were.

Love these videos so much. Every chapter I read I come and listen to your "recap". I understand the text very well but its very nice to have you explain things in "layman's" terms and make the text much more manageable and putting things into perspective that I nay have over-looked.

I don't know if my brain is that leaky or the audiobook I had listened to was abridged at a random spot, because I honestly had no recollection of the creation of an island. And on an equally foolish note... I still wonder what possessed Tolkien to name something so important...Túna... But I was swept away with the description of Alqualondë. It sounds quite like heaven, honestly. What I have to thank you for is the way you've presented to tackle the names. I am hopeless at remembering names in general. But I really need to try to apply this to my reading here on out. Maybe by the end I'll be able to untangle these lines.

If I was an artist I would paint Tirion on Túna as a circular walled city sitting on a giant can of Chicken of the Sea.

Your videos really help me to get deeper into the story. At the moment I listen the chapter via audiobook first and then whatch the matching video. I really struggle with the different names (elves are not always called elves, every name sounds quite similar etc.) but having pictures of them helps me connect the name to a person. It just baffles me that gandalf, galadriel and other charakters are so old and powerful ... it gives the movies and the books so much more epicness. Tolkin is by far my favourite author. Greeting from Germany and stay safe during these difficult times.

These are brilliant. The book is absolutely amazing in terms of its depth of explanations regarding the creation of one of the greatest worlds we will ever read. However, with that comes an abundance of information to take in which is quite difficult to process. These companions are absolutely perfect. I’m finding myself reading a chapter and then listening to one of these to embed it and further understand it. Probably going to explore a few other Tolkien books next as I’ve only read LotR and The Hobbit, albeit a few times, would you consider doing these companion videos for other Tolkien books or are they not as necessary?

In a previous chapter, Ulmo was advocating for the Elves to stay and create their own society, but here he's using magical music from seashells to entice them into going to Arda. I'm having a hard time reconciling this as it seems like an inconsistency or conflict of some sort. Was he sort of following orders according to the decision of the rest of the Valar to bring Elves to Arda? His opinion to let them use their free will to create a society seems in direct conflict with putting them under a spell and artificially creating a desire within them to be drawn to the light of the Two Trees of Valinor. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Straighten me out, I'm probably missing something.

Correction: Ulmo doesn't bring the elves to Arda. He brings them to Aman (Valinor). Here's my explanation for this: Ulmo has his own opinions and shares them with the others. But he's not someone to force others to obey him. Clearly, the other Valar wanted to get the elves to Valinor, so Manwe ordered them to guide them on the journey. Ulmo is loyal to Manwe and obeys him, even if he disagrees with him. And he respects the free will of the others. When the elves wanted to stay with Osse, he let them stay. When their desire to continue their journey grew stronger, but they couldn't bring themselves to leave their best buddy, Ulmo made it easier for them by pushing them to go. It wasn't because he approved it but because it was their wish and he respected that.
