Darren Magee outlines the characteristics and traits of a sociopath. One of the anti-social personality disorders, and part of the Cluster B group of personalities. Common traits include, narcissism, superficial charm, manipulation, impulsive behaviour and being irresponsible. Also looking at the sociopathic stare, sometimes referred to as the psychopathic stare, an intense and fixated look which often appears just prior to an act of domination, sensation seeking or ego gratification.

No thank you Darren, your videos have been a breath of fresh air. The way you articulate these various psychological disorders is amazing. There are so many people out there doing videos but I find your probably the most interesting and informative because you give real life examples of behaviour that make it so much easier to understand. So once again thank you for making these videos because they have helped me reach a greater understanding and helped me get to a better place in my own life after suffering abuse.

The sociopathic stare, sometimes also known as "shark eyes" or "dead eyes". It's a soulless, cold glare or blank look totally at odds with whatever emotion they're currently feigning or the situation at hand. It's as if their face is a mask and the eyes just painted-on.

I thought I'd do a quick update on my situation. I filed for divorce in January of 2021, the divorce was granted on January 27th 2023. Because my X caused so much chaos and mayhem with our finances, family, my attorney and the Courts, it took 2 years to finally get to court/with the granting of divorce. It cost me $24, 400.00 in legal fees. I could go on and on. One thing I will mention, over the course of the 2 years he sent me over 700 emails. It's going to take a loooong time to sift through all the craziness of 24 years of marriage. Sometimes it feels so surreal. Anyway, blessings to you all. ✝

Now I understand better. Thank you. I am currently in burn-out , trying to recover after working full time for a sociopath for over 10 years. I knew she was a narcissist , that was obvious but now I agree with my therapist who said her behavior is that of a sociopath. I made excuses for her anti social behavior to our customars and collegues and myself for years. "she is under a lot of stress" "she doesn t realise how she comes across" "she had a hard childhood" and when I finally couldn t take the financial, emotional abuse anymore she immediatly turned around and attacked me, bullied me, intimidated me. Only then I saw It she really had zero respect for me. Eventhough I gave my all for her business for many years and tried my all to have healthy communication. (Wich never worked as she leaves no room for other parties to speak) It was truely horrible. She drives on conflict and adrenaline so I had no choice but to completely block her. I still pity her, she has no real relations. Must be so lonely.

Yes! I got involved with someone who sounds like this. I don't think she's aware of the consequences but she knows what she wants. I was vulnerable to her because I was more reliant on external validation at the time and let me tell you, that stare when you believe there's a genuine attraction.... but ye, she knows there's something not right with her, but hasn't got a clue what because she's focused on devaluing others. I kind of feel for her and have to maintain contact at work but I'm learning to be much more boundaried and not rely on her as a reliable mirror!

This was very well delivered and explained, thank you. I believe I was tormented as a child repeatedly by my sociopathic uncle's stare, he would use it to corner and intimidate me, when I least expected it. I was always on high alert, and I hated with all of my heart how he would so casually turn on that flip switch...he always favored me, he was incredibly obsessive and parasitic in his behavior towards me, acted like I was his one and only resource of love on earth. He treated me nicer than anyone, when he had an intense history of violence and emotional abuse. It was always treated like this thing that was okay, but it wasn't, I suffered inside, in silence, for many years...He really messed up my ability to attach to people, to myself, even...and made it easier for me to attach to people who aren't safe, without recognizing red flags and creating distance. I'd attach to them, instead, like I learned to attach to my uncle....I resent those memories, on some days, and how they disrupt my nervous system, still, and make me feel unsafe inside my own body, but, I'm glad there are qualified and educated people out there who can touch on the subject honestly, and give it a name, so I can work through those emotions with professional help, and heal. Thank you. ❤

This knowledge was one the healing balms for me during my time of therapy. My therapist explained my then romantic interest's behavior, I did further research as well, and the light came on 😉 You may laugh, but I allowed on print out on the disorder, read the characteristics to someone who knew that person, that someone said that what I read sounded like the former romantic interest, I showed them the print out (Sociopath at the top of it), and they said, Damnnnn! No kidding.

It sounds like you are confusing type 1 and type 2 psychopathy types. Type 1 (primary psychopathy) lacks empathy. Type 2 (sociopaths, ASPD personality construct) do not lack empathy (they have impaired empathy). Type 1 are charming and manipulative. Type 2 (sociopaths/ASPD) show criminal versatility and impulsiveness. Also, people who have truly dealt with psychopaths in their practice would not characterize their stare as "blank".
@FreeRepublicofIreland
@FreeRepublicofIreland 4 ай бұрын
Totally disagree. Both can be criminals but not necessarily. Sociopaths can only feel empathy for maybe animals, and maybe their immediate family because they are part of their ego. The major difference I’ve seen is this: psychos are calmer, they internalize their evilness and are usually OCD level of organized and put together. They’re the kind that you may piss off and they’ll appear emotionless, no reaction, but then will murder you in your sleep a few days later. A sociopath is usually very disorganized and erratic, sloppy, disheveled, and prone to sudden extremes of expressed rage, like throwing an explosive tantrum over the smallest inconvenience or showing no hesitation to scream and berate someone in public. The term “Karen” is a decent example. Sociopaths are also able to control themselves when they’re around someone who has leverage over them, like their boss or client: think Dr Jekyll and Hyde. Rebecca Glashow at BBC Studios is a great example.

My ex, a true sociopath, got this exact "stare" when I finally confronted him. This was many years after I had divorced him, and during a family function that invilved our grown sons, although in private. I had never witnessed that stare before that day, mainly because the occasion never presented itself for me to have to put him in his place. I wasn't scared, in the least, instead it was such an attention-getting reaction that had me feeling like "Wow, I must have really struck a nerve with this monster". After that, his retaliation, the smear campaign from Hell, had me questioning my existence, as he alienated two of our three sons from me. The deceit that this monster was capable of had no limits, and the fabrications and twisted truths that he concocted trumped all truths. His ability to play victim was award-winning, however his pedestal is now crumbling, as his coherts/flying monkeys are seeing the demise of his protective cover.

A very likely correction: its not a matter of they cant understand other people's feelings. Sociopaths actually have the ability to understand other people's feelings, but they choose to not understand them in order to keep themselves at the center of their own attention. Even when having a conscious thought of themselves should have empathy for others, they reject it and go back to keeping themselves at the center of their own attention.

In my observation of sociopaths it had come to my attention that they may have their own language? Or at least Grammer is different in their speech. For instance the popular phrase "death to fascists" would really mean "death is in the hands of the fascists" or "the fascists are now responsible for death, we are not in this particular situation, but we are participating indirectly" a type of sociopathic dyslexia if you will This is an observation I have come by because I noticed quite a few people with narcissistic tendencies I know are Grammar Nazis. To the point that it seriously disturbs them. Probably as it deeply confused them. We know very little about the sociopathic mind and how differently their perception is. Just a thought

No empathy. I had one say, "I did what I had to do." Here is an example of the mother who created this person so read closely: This individual is son #1. Son #2 lives in another state while son # 1 lives in close vicinity to their mother. The mother has an extremely expensive energy bill and ask son #1 for assistance. He gives the total amount, approximately $300. Mom then calls son #2 and ask for assistance for the same bill. Son #2 sends the money, but Son #2 calls his brother, son #1, and admonished him for being in close vicinity to their mother, able, but unwilling to help her. Son#1, more or less, became upset, and as they dialogued, they learned that their mother, their mother had manipulated both of them. True story.

Props to Dr(?) Magee for reminding people not to diagnose someone themselves / someone else because of the information from a single KZfaq video instead of studying Psychology for years to be able to properly diagnose.

Someone I was seeing in the past described herself as "I use to be a sociopath but I'm not anymore". Is this true? Can someone move away from being a sociopath? Or is that merely yet another delusional lie in their arsenal to manipulate and control someone's view of them? She still to this day displays narcissitic, manipulative and charismatic behaviours that gets people wanting to do things for her or give her things. It drives me up the wall how charming she is and how she has both men and women absolutely drinking out of her hands.

Most psychiatrists and psychologists agree that sociopathy/psychopathy is an inborn character trait and as such, is not likely to ever change. Most likely is that this person is saying that they've changed in order to further manipulate their victim(s).

I’m 19 but I think I have a lot of traits of a sociopath. When I look back on things I’ve done and how I behave, all the pieces click of a textbook sociopath. I’m confused and don’t really know what to do. I want to get professional help but I’m scared. Do you have any advice to steer me in the right direction? I’d like to have a family of my own one day, but I don’t want my sociopathic tendencies to get in the way and hurt my new family.

Are there strongly differing degrees of Sociopathy? Someone related once about a case of someone who, seemingly, didn't really believe that anyone else existed besides himself, that everyone else in the world was just part of his imagination. Is there any basis to this story?

Yes. I have aspd and I’m a fairly normal person. I just don’t feel much empathy and I’m really impulsive. On the other side of the spectrum you have someone like Jeffrey Dahmer. We’re both sociopaths, but I would never hurt someone the way he did

@@DarrenFMagee I watched several channels on this topic and the best one so far is dr. Ramani who that stated that a narcissist does feel shame. I ask this because they really overlap and therefore its difficult to understand the fundamental difference between these 2 personality disorders.

Happy anniversary for 12 years with my narcissist sociopath. Obviously I didn't get anything he didn't do anything special with me, he went out and had some fun for himself behind my back. He thinks this is normal. The other day he gave me the stare.... For something he was accusing me of doing that I didn't do. It's a long story but that was the last straw I can't take anymore. He's taking so much from me but he thinks he's good he thinks he's been a wonderful husband. But I'm dying inside. I am still with him because he pays for my health insurance, but I pay for all of my needs I paid for the house I pay for everything he never has to buy anything for me. I feel very alone being married to this man. But yet he thinks he's doing good. 😵‍💫
