In this video, we have a 2005 Honda Accord that is displaying the "Check Fuel Cap" message when started. We discuss the first thing you need to do when this happens, and that is to check and ensure the fuel cap has a clean O-ring and surface to seal against on the filler tube.
At the end of this video, the system stops displaying the Check Fuel Cap message, but it is immediately followed by the vehicle illuminating the Check Engine Light. This means our diagnosis is likely going to have to take a deeper dive into the EVAP Emissions system.

I replaced my gas cap and the cjeck engine light was still on. Watched your video and wiped out the mouth of the tank, and the light went off. Whew! Thanks ever so much❣️

Thanks So Much for the Simple Explanation! I did just exactly what you said respecting the checking and cleaning of the cap rubber "O" ring gasket and the surface of the gas filler neck. Once I did those things, the check fuel cap light went out almost immediately.

Just cleaned and coated the cap and spout opening with wd40 and started crv. Dash cap alert still on. Played your video and took advice to totally clean and dry the seal and the opening and it worked like a charm. Gas cap check light gone. Thanks

For what it's worth, I had this msg on a 2015 Civic LX. I tightened the cap, took it off retightened numerous times. Would not go away. Drove it for a bit, still would not go away. Then I started the car with the gas cap removed, let it run for a minute then turned the car off. Put the gas cap back on, started the car and the msg was gone.

I just turned on my car to go to work and it said check fuel cap message. I saw the video and thank you it solved the issue. It didn’t show any check fuel cap message anymore.

Thank you that was simple easy to do. I like how you explained it step by step and clearly. This made my panic go away immediately. I could smell the gas coming from the gas cap and i cleaned it. It was a bit dusty and slightly dirty. My cap wasn't on tight either. Also I didn't know a gas cap that was loose, dirty, dusty , etc.. could cause problems. Now I know thanks to your clip.

Not sure if my 2005 Ford 500 Limited has that warning light but I was told that it can cause the "check engine" light to come on if not sealed. Thanks!!

This happens with Chevy sparks as well, I'm sure that's what the problem was , always go to KZfaq before shady mechanics who want to suck your bank account dry

Is that gas cap a one-click ? I'm asking because I have a '02 Ford Taurus and I bought a new gas cap that seems to be a one-click lock. I replaced it because the original gas cap continually spun with the clicking sound and I had a gas smell.

Generally all working gas caps are multi click but Isaí ally it’s deacon end to do a 1-2 click for a good seal, but check you owners manual for what it recommends

It's a fall safe mechanism so you dont lose your cover in the event of opening and it falls off without you noticing.its your choice and discretion tho.

@@danitzadanna7099 so I found a good mechanic & he did a smoke test on it & it was the “purge sensor” only. It wasn’t expensive.

Step #1. Tighten the fuel cap another 3 or 4 clicks. That usually solves the problem.

U can tell u have a leak at the fuel cap just look at the back off the fuel door

Just take a rag and wet it with AT-205 on the seal of the cap. Don't oversoak it....Just get the seal good and wet. Make sure the car is OFF. Wipe the dirt off around the filler neck...PROBLEM SOLVED....NO MORE MESSAGE,NO NEW SEAL NO NEW CAP..........DONE It worked for me. Message NEVER came back on.....
