In this episode of Wisconsin Foodie, we hit the road, crossing the border into neighboring Minnesota to meet up with Wisconsin native, Chef Yia Vang. Chef Vang runs Union Hmong Kitchen located in Graze Provisions + Libations food hall. Yia’s goal is to make Hmong food more approachable for American diners while also paying homage to his family and their history. Host Luke Zahm joins Chef Yang at his brand new concept, Vinai, not only to dine, but also to attempt to kidnap Yia and bring him back to Wisconsin to cook with him at the Owl Farm.

Luke, if you were the host of this show when it started I bet there would be a few more zeros added to your subscriber count. I get to come out to Vernon county once or twice a year to fish and see family and I gotta say, you really do the driftless area justice, brother!

Love this. It’s very Hmong to cook together. We do this all the time cook together. It’s more fun and taste better when you eat together. That’s right we use palm sugar, but it’s a great substitute. My boyfriend thinks it’s funny that I just start cooking. But we learn from a very very young age. The first time I started cooking I was 5…😂😂😂. I was plucking chickens… and cooking all kinds of stuff. Kids now may not be able to cook an egg.😂😂😂

We'd love to try some Hmong food, but I don't think that they have any vegetarian options.

For over 5,000 years in China, Hmong food has lived. If only China didn't genocide our people, we wouldn't face hardship.

The only real Hmong food is zaub qaub and zaub ntsuab xyaw nqaij npuas. Everything else is common food or copied from other cultures.

You dont know food history and culinary. Chef Yia is expanding on our culture. Instead of eating boiled chicken and pork with greens, he is introducing Hmong fusion food, from our thousand year migration. Hmong food is very good.

@@hdggt I’m not disrespecting chef Yia and I don’t need to know food history because I was living in it. But I will never say Hmong food is… then show a bunch of copied food from different cultures. Boiled pork with greens and basic grilled or cooked food is all we know and all we ate because that was all we had. I would agreed more if he stated the basics then say his adding a new twist inspired by other cultures. And that grilled ground turkey was definitely not Hmong food, im positive they got that from KZfaq.
