This is the sight no South African wanted to see, As Kolbe had a serious ankle injury in the Top 14 match of Toulon vs Lyon. Seeing Kolbe cry as he gets carted off the field scared me, because it would suggest Kolbe think he torn his ankle ligament and suffered a grade 3 Ankle sprain. If that is the case that would make it very difficult for Kolbe to be fit in time for the World Cup, and even if he is fit, he most likely will miss a few games of the World Cup.
I hate these types of injuries, when there is no contact involved, it's usually the worst types as that is when we see torn ligaments. It sucks to watch it because it's something Kolbe does so many times, where he scores a try and we're used to it, in this case it looks like he just steps awkwardly and was in a ton of pain afterwards. It's a freak an freak accident that you never want to see on any player, nevermind a star player.
There is still no official confirmation to the extent of the injury, we do know it's an ankle sprain. We'll most likely only find out the grade of the sprain once Toulon do some MRI tests on his ankle, then we'll know how bad it is. Best case scenario it's only a grade 1 or 2 tear, which happens frequently and athletes can easily come back from that, he'll be fit well before the World Cup. However, if its a complete torn ligament (Grade 3 sprain), then it becomes very difficult as the recovery time is significantly longer. We're looking at 3-6 months. As I said in the video, the one thing we do know about Kolbe, is that he is as tough as they get, and that makes me feel more confident that he'll be back.
I'm sure I'm speaking for all Rugby fans we I say that we hope to see him make a quick recovery. Rugby is way more fun to watch, when Kolbe is on the field. He's a magician.
