After doing all that and more on my 04, all it turned out to be was a crappy ground on the frame under the door. I'd start there because its easy and free other than a few min time.

@@sharpcarco . It was the 4x4 not working vid. I was trying to figure out a no lights on 4wheel drive selector switch and non working 4x4. Cleaning up those ground solved the issue. I guess its pretty common. It also fixed a lingering fuel pump problem. Hope it can help someone else.

On a body mount support almost under the drivers seat. Either one or two small bundles on grounding studs. When they get rusted all kinds of things go wrong.

This video is magic. Tracked my problem from motor to actuator. The switch still worked so I knew it was the module. Followed this procedure including c-clamping to cables to clear codes. First time I have 4wd in 2 years. Thank you!!! 👍

I miss the days when you had a floor mounted lever to engage the 4x4. All this electronic stuff is nice but a pain in the butt (and expensive) when it fails.

I have a2013 Silverado LT. Mine was a broken black wire at the actuator. Got a new wire harness at advance auto and spliced it in.

Hey man! I’m having the same symptoms but according to my scanner people have changed/fixed the connector going to the tccm. The only code I’m throwing is C0398. Been stuck on this for years

My truck year 1500 just lower end dash so shifters on the other side I have B0770 4WD auto range indicator control circuit short or open. And some others going up to b0785 I replaced the switch but on both the new and old the light by 2wd 4hi etc isn’t illuminated but now my service 4x4 is gone I hear it jump in 4lo but no indication light would this part be my problem? Any ideas I can’t seem to find my problem or a fix it’s not stuck in any gear and it switches to any selection or so it sounds and drives like it is

Women’s dads truck is a 2014 1500 stuck in 4wd and the dial isn’t doing anything I was thinking it might be the shift actuator or would it be the shift module under the dash

I have a 4x4 2001 gmc 2500hd the 4x4 will not engage press the 4lo button and the switch goes back to 2wd press the 4hi does the same thing can hear the tccm clicking any idea?

Off the top of my head I’m not real sure it’s probably located on the transfer case if that’s what you’re speaking about.

I’m also in Grand Rapids! Small world. I bought a truck some one hacked a trans into. I did another tranny swap and now I have no powers to my 4x4 system. Lights on switch come on for half a second when starting then nothing works at all no lights on buttons I have no clue what’s wrong

2015 Silverado Z71. Steering wheel info screen flashed Service 4wd. Knob is still working thankfully and allows me shift the transfer case. Service Update 28770 was performed on arrival to dealership in 2015. Gm Forum, Chevy Forum and numerous KZfaq vids have described and shown this to be a ground wire issue. It has been a problem since 2005. My PT warranty runs out April 2020. Why ,if the service flash of the TCCM was performed; did my Computer throw warning?? And is it really a job insurance gimmick on GMs part.

When do bleed down with battery wires. Before changing unit. When it is out. Or after putting in new one?

Did your new controller work after you plug it in?. That’s the only reason you would need to do a bleed down

Yes, I do believe so I don’t think they changed that system till 2015 if it looks the same it is the same

I had this problem. I replaced the module you replaced but my selector switch lights up only when I turn key then doesn’t illuminate. Is it the knob itself or something else??

No I doubt that it’s the switch make sure you check all the fuses and then have it scanned a scanner will tell the person looking at it that the switch is been turned etc. Etc

Clay my 2008 Silverado shows that it is shifting into 4x4 but it isn't actually doing anything at all. Can that module cause that as well?

That would be the module down on the side of the transfer case.

Hello Clay, first, are you a mechanic or a DIY'r with a good scanner? Second, I have a 2010 chevy silverado 2500 hd. It appeared to shift into 4 wheel high (at least that is what it indicated on the rotary switch) but would not switch into 4 wheel low. I thought it might be the transfer case motor, so I removed the motor and had someone turn the switch to see if the motor was actuating. At that point everything went dead. No lights to the switch, nothing working. Would this be an indication that I fried the TCCM? Looking on the web there are a number of different control modules. I would I know that I am purchasing the correct module? Thanks for any responses. Marvin Law.

Hello Marvin . First off I’m neither I’m just an idiot , Second off I might be a DIY . Sometimes I feel like a real mechanic . And some people have called me a real mechanic and every once in a while I’ve actually thought I was a real mechanic. Even after 20 years of owning my shop I’m still unsure. If I gave you any direction on the situation you’re having it would just be 100% me shooting in the dark . I generally like to be at least 50% sure when I answer mechanical problem over a text message . A simple diagnosis of that should probably only cost you about $75 at most reputable shop so I highly recommend you take it to the shop it will probably save you hundreds in the long run just do what they tell you to do and I’m sure you will be fine sorry I wish I could be of more help but remember I am just an idiot lol Have a great day god bless

Take the battery cables off of the battery and put them together , The ends of the cables the metal portions put them together with vice grips or hold them together with Wire it drains the battery from inside the ECM

Stateofsteezo yes, disconnect both the positive and the negative cables. Hold both of the terminals together away from the battery. Gm tech said it was an internal reset.

Why will my 2000 Silverado 4 wheel drive it's hard to turn to the right doesn't matter if it's in 4 wheel drive or not turn s fine to the left but have to use both hand to turn right I'm confuzzed help please

The differential has a limited slip in it so when it’s hard to turn One Direction four-wheel-drive and not hard to turn the other direction your front differential is locking up The only thing that you can try other than replacing the front differential I would think at this time is some slip modifier just Google that and change out the fluid and give it a shot you don’t have anything really to lose

I clearly need help here , if you can please get back to me ASAP , I have a 08 GMC Sierra 1500 Z71 4wd . Now I’ve been having an issue where to my 4wd shifter button marks to be on 2wd high but , when I drop it into gear to drive , you can head a clank in the front wheels , I’m not sure I feel like I’m riding on 4wd high all day cause when I make sharp turns the front tires like skid a bit, I need help not sure what to do cause when I drop it in reverse the front tires clank again as if I were turning off 4wd , any help please ?

Well from the story you’re telling me it definitely sounds like it’s staying in four-wheel-drive and because you say the light is switching it’s either on the transfer case or the front differential mechanism is not disengaging like it supposed to try putting it in neutral switching it to 4 Wheel Dr. while it is in neutral and running and then switching it out of four-wheel-drive try there’s to different times and hopefully it will just come out of four-wheel-drive for you it’s probably not a big deal even if you have to take it to the service shop I hope that information is a little bit hopeful

Hey clay, i have a 2014 Chevy Silverado 2500 with the same issues. I replaced my transfer case control module with a dorman part and before It would go into 4wd high , but not low. Now it won’t come out of 2wd and it flashes service stabiltrak and traction control off. Any idea what’s going on with it?

Well unfortunately that could be a lot of different things but my best guess would be a malfunctioning wheel speed sensor probably some dirt or debris caught up in the reluctor ring sorry I wish I had a better idea

OK I understand what you’re talking about you’re talking about a battery bleed down you’re going to remove. Both of your battery cables and touch them together for 25 minutes if the battery cables will not reach one another then you will put a wire in between them so they are making contact and this will bleed the internal ECM battery down and reset the computer if you do not have a scan tool and cannot reset the codes

I may have to try this for my 2012 Silverado this weekend. My message center says, "Service 4 wheel drive". I hope it works. I don't want to pay Len Lyall Chervrolet their extreme prices. It would be like paying $100 for a loaf of bread. :|

What if the switch doesnt flash or turn solid when selecting a 4wd but you can hear it engaging in the transfer case? Just a faulty switch?

@4:30 What did you mean by bleeding down the battery by connecting wires for 25 min? What wires are you talking about? Can you not just plug in the module and if it's working as expected, be done with it? not sure I follow what you are saying.

you take the positive cable off of the battery you take the negative cable off the battery and you make sure the two Wires connect ..... ,Hopefully that answers your question

Clay Rogers thanks that makes more sense. Do you know of there is a way to test the module? I've got code c0396 2011 silverado stuck in 4x4 auto. Cleaned ground and Just replaced actuator still no luck. Looking at module now but don't want to keep throwing parts at it.

Well that’s exactly what mine was doing and I replace the module and it worked. Unfortunately without being there I wouldn’t be able to tell you and if I remember right my scanner told me that was the problem so I didn’t get deep into figuring out exactly how to fix the module it self

Clay Rogers thanks for the tip, I've been having trouble figuring out which ground to clean for my 2011, but I tested them all out so I went a head and ordered the module. Hopefully it works for me, I hate playing the guessing game...

I think it needs to be in Neutral to shift from 2 to 4awd, at lease that's how my works

I recommend that in every situation but the manufactures tell us that we are supposed to be able to do it on the fly but I’m sure you’re right
