I'm getting ready to do this soon. I had a knocking noise replaced the fuel injectors went away. A week later noise back running like crap and oil smells like fuel. Great video it's saved and hopefully this will fix it!

Good video, it helped me to change my 2012 Equinox pump. Please remember too pull out and clean the cap behind the pump spring in the engine block, it can get stuck.

i was told that needed to be replace and i was like why it wasn't really dirty or worn. I was also told that it has to go on the flatness part so rotate that shaft in there somehow and place it. I didn't see you touch it so i'm thinking is it even necessary.

@@rodscomfortblecreations8544 Yeah man the Cam - follower is the name, i was ready to just put the HPFP solo but being that it's (follower) acts like a bearing and gets worn from the bad oil and fuel it is a good time to replae -- the part number for the alignment tool is EN 48896 which you will need to place the correct depth for the follower, you will need some needle noise pliers to pull the original one out and spray down with 5w-30. They say you have to rotate the engine by hand to get the exhaust cam to be(TDC) flat on the side the follower faces. Bro Bro Growers Love, Peace.

our 2012 equinox starts and when on idle starts to like wana turn off and it does unless i press the gas ... engine light was on and i replaced the gas cap and engine light inmediately turned off.... but still when turned on and regulates down feels like it wants to turn off and it still does unless i press the gas after that it stays on normaly its a 2.4 l any tips oh and no codes come up and engine light is gone ever since i changed gas cap....... do you think its my fuel pump i have to replace just my guess

Make sure that pump is OEM from GM! I seen people replace it with an after Market and still have the same issue. Also you do not need to position or remove the cam-follower. I’m here if you need help!

Sorry for the late reply! Have you tried cleaning the mass air flow sensor? Have your tried checking the injectors? Does the car act funny or anything you notice after the check engine light?

How will I know if my pump is bad? I have no codes but I did an oil analysis and it came back more than 5% fuel dilution. Coil packs are good and spark plugs are good. Is there a test I can run to see if my pump is having issues? Thanks in advance

When the pump is on its way out, you will definitely get a check engine light. If you have access to a scanner try checking the fuel trims! How old are the spark plugs? Check the gap on those spark plugs.

Having an issue with my 2012 Equinox 3.0L where it cranks but doesn't start. Tried swapping the fuses involved and same issue, also tried battery jump pack and battery tender overnight to make sure it isn't a lack of power. I am thinking now it may be a fuel pump. Does that sound right to you? If so I may give this procedure a try. When the key is turned you can hear it crank but it wont start.

Remember, you need fuel, spark and air for the car to be able to start. Here are a few tips to check if your fuel pump is bad or not. Have someone turn the key into “On “ position “ while someone else checks in the back underneath for a buzzing/ whining noise. That should be your fuel pump priming everything time it gets turned on. If you do not hear anything move on to the next step. Located your fuel tank and bang the bottom part where the fuel pump would sit in. Give it a few good bangs and then try starting the car. If it starts you might have a bad fuel pump!

Nice video just changed fuel pump and oil. The oil smelt like gas and my equinox would run for awhile with key off. Question I just changed the oil same time as pump how long do you think I should drive it before changing oil again. Just want to make sure all the gas is gone

If you want you can go ahead and change the oil again now. For sure there shouldn’t be any gasoline left in the oil.

I just happened to be trying to pump fuel from a 2013 Equinox that has a pretty full tank because this car is just sitting for now. Disconnected the supply line before the schrader valve and connected some hose going into a container. I jumped the run crank relay but fuel pump will not stay on. Seems like a prime cycle or something. Is there an easy way to make the fuel pump run continuously? I mean, aside from crawling underneath and jumping 12v to the pump connector.

@@Fwerks.1592 just want to pump the fuel out in order to transfer it to a vehicle that is being used. I planned on putting the car on ramps and seeing if I can get at the pump connections. If I can then I'll just jump 12v to the pump and I'll be able to get this done. But if there's an easier way, let me know.

couldn't it be fixed with just a new gasket? from what I've read it's a faulty gasket.... I also thought about using a hi-tac gasket saver to strengthen the gasket so it won't happen again... thoughts?

A gasket??? Noooooo this is definitely an internal issue that was failing. I didn’t have a leak issue. I had an issue with fuel leaking into the cylinder via the cam lifter. The spring on it wears out . Please do not use any gasket make or hi -tac gasket! Since it’s fuel it will break down quick! Use the metal gasket provided with the pump!

My gf's 2012 nox threw the p0172, was doing the diesling at shutoff. I cleared the codes and it seemed to resolve itself after a few attempts and has been fine now for 500km. Do these HPFP intermittently fail? I'm assuming this is still going to cause me problems in the future.

Do you still have that slight delay when you shut the car off? Also check your dip stick smell the oil. You don’t want to have fuel mix with the oil. Eventually it will need to be replaced! It is a very common issue among the 2.4 eco engine on the equinox.

Great video, very informative. However I see no mention of replacing the high pressure fuel line between the pump and the fuel rail. Isn't that required when changing the pump? Not throwing rocks, just asking as I'm attempting mine now and want to make sure it's right.

Good morning! It all depends on the mileage on the vehicle. It’s not required to replace the high pressure fuel line but since your are there it would be a good precautionary item to do. I did not replace the line since this was the first time undoing the hp pump/line. So the line was still good and leak free. You can only undo the line a couple times before you have to replace it.

@James Johnson, it’s was pretty simple. The only thing that gave me trouble was disconnecting the fuel line. Other than that the new pump, slides right in. It only goes in one way.

Thank you for the video, Sir! I have the exact problem and P0172 code on our 2013 Terrain 2.4 and I also smell some fuel on the oil dipstick as well. I watched another video where the problem was with the Injectors and I'm not sure how I can tell if the issue is the HPFP and the Injectors or not. I guess trial and error will have to tell or just replace both. Also, I read on a Forum that you may have to set the alignment with the CAM Shaft to the new HPFP, is this true? I know we didn't see you do it but just wondering if you have any words of wisdom on that! Again, Thanks Bro!!

The high pressure fuel pump is a very common issue among the eco gm engines! Whatever you do, DO NOT mess with there lifter. I seen people rotate the engine to align the lifter to then align the new pump. After they all do they they have all these codes popping up. Just replace the pump and nothing else, I would also replace the fuel line if you can get it. When installing the pump putting it against the block will give you a little resistance. Once you line it up and start both bolts the rest is piece of cake!

Also to answer the question no it’s not true that you have to rotate the the engine to install the lifter/ cam roller. Just don’t touch it or try to put another one in there. This equinox has been running solid ever since the video and it’s been over a year lol

hi i have a 2011 equinox 2.4 engine light was on i just had the high pressure pump replaced at a shop and they said they rebuilt it and changed the oil as there was gas in it however i drove the car for a couple weeks checked the oil and after letting it sit over night i checked the dip stick and it was dripping a bit and had gas in oil again but no engine light and runs fine fuel trim was good to on my scanner. do you think i should just buy a brand new oem pump and that will fix the problem i figure rebuild is crap

I would have recommended replacing the HPF pump with a new ACDelco unit. Does the car shudder at times? Is there a delay when you shut the car off?

@@Fwerks.1592 no its fine i also put a acdelco brand new one in yesterday and the car ran great for about 30 mins then it started the stay running when shut off and started stalling so i put the rebuilt one back in and its fine so im thinking its normal for oil dilution in these vehicles gdi wont be buying a GM again after this

I started working on my wife's Chevy Equinox 2010, it started with the Air mass flow Sensor, fixed that and new spark plugs with coils. Then the Brat gave me Bank one Sensor, ok changed them both, Cleaned the Throttle body like new. Now isnlike ut git worst. Nownits telling me the Fuel Pressure is to high. Code .P228D.(( Whats up with this thing. Lol... Please help... PS.. I did order the Fuel Pump, GM original so i will be changing that next.

So the high pressure fuel pump is on the block. The traditional pump your talking about it the sending unit. That’s always located inside the fuel tank. All vehicles have a fuel pump inside the tank and they also have a high pressure fuel pump located somewhere on the motor. No worries you’re all good bro!

I have a P0191 code - replaced back fuel pump and fuel pressure sensor and code still there. It is also causing Stabilitrak error causing engine reduction. Is it possible the high pressure fuel pump work also cause a p0191? Not sure what else to do at this point.

Have you checked the injectors? You can use a stethoscope and hear each injectors to see if there are clicking which means they are spraying. Also check the connectors of the injectors. So we know it’s somewhat of a fuel issue. Have you checked the fuel regulator?

@@Fwerks.1592 they have changed the fuel pump in the back, fuel sensor, new exhaust manifold, new throttle body. The issue began with hearing a roaring noise but only from within the cabin. Then a week later, the code popped up along with stabilitrak and engine reduced error. All the issues happened within 2 weeks of an oil change. Is it possible that the incorrect oil could have been put in and caused this?

@@rachky734 you said it all started with a roar noise within the cabin? That sounds like a bad wheel bearing to me! Also looks like one of the front abs speed sensor went out! That can throw a stabilitrak issue!

Don’t be afraid! It’s a straight forward job. As long as you can disconnect the fuel lines you should be fine!

Does your car shake/ shudder when idle? A little hard to tell without being there. Might be a bad fuel pump going out. Do you hear like a whining more lie a bussing noise coming from the rear? Might be a fuel issue. Could be a bad fuel pump or a high pressure fuel pump.

Once I start a second time it idles fine and rpms stay at about 900 rpms it idles fine no fluctuations and will drive fine never stalls during driving, i dont hear the hissing sound from fuel pump in tank, its got me stumped,Like I said only kicks n stalls after the first attempt of starting the car I have to turn off the ignition and then on the second try that starts fine and does not stall

I noticed in the video, he did not replace the hp fuel feed line with the yellow tag on it. Can this line be reused? the dealer is telling me i have buy a new one with the install. Problem is it is not available though.

This line has been reused. Keep in mind this is the first time this high pressure fuel pump has been removed so the line is still good! The dealer only wants to replace it because it benefits them to sell you the part. Once you start taking the same fuel line frequently, then it needs to be replaced %100. If this is the first time undoing that fuel line you should be fine. Again the pump I replaced I had no issues and no fuel leaks! I’m not saying don’t listen to the professional, but giving you my experience. I hope this helps, thanks!

I've been reading you do need find the lowest part of the cam lobe before sliding it in. EN48896 is the tool.

@@itsnitz0575 if that’s what they say I don’t think it’s true. I did the work without the special tool and literally this is a plug and play part. Remove the old part and put in the new part. I have not had any issues so far!

@@Fwerks.1592 there is other videos showing removing the casing inside. Cleaning it. Then adjusting the lobe inside with the tool or finger before re installation.

Had the same code. Not sure about trim numbers. 2013 equinox was sputtering and car shut off late as you said. Replaced the HP fuel pump and it ran better and shut off correctly. I did notice I had a lot of oil in the shroud intake. I cleared codes and After driving it a while it still shows 0172 code. I assume the rings are shot. Thanks so much for video. Any suggestions?

@@Fwerks.1592 it seemed to idle better yes and had more power. Also, the eco mode is stuck on. The button obviously had something spilled on it and makes it stick when depressed but won’t shut off eco. When I removed the shroud it had a lot of oil in it. It poured out when I removed it.

Not exclusive to GM, Bosch manufactures 80% of GDI components, for all manufactures. Still better than the EA888 cam eater, (although they both have an appetite for timing chains....)

Great video. I currently have a p0172 code as well, I just changed the spark plugs and the o2 sensor and cleared the check engine light and it still came back on. I also got another one p0191 for a "fuel rail pressure sensor" before I did the spark plugs and o2 sensor. You think it's time to change my fuel pump? Also, when I turn the car off, it "diesels" for a second or two. That would most certainly come from the fuel pump, no?

Ali A., I can assure you it’s the high pressure fuel pump!!! The biggest sign for me was when I would turn the car off it would take a few seconds for the car to actually shut off. Meaning the fuel pressure pump was leaking internally and causing fuel to ignite in the cylinder chamber.

If you are still under warranty it should be covered, but to be on the safe side give your local dealer a call. They will be able to tell you if it’s covered or not.

No. Whatever you do “Do Not “ remove the camshaft follower. Just remove the pump. When installing the new pump. Just insert it and start off a few bolts. The pump has a stiff spring on it so it will give you slight resistance when starting the bolts. Push slightly and start two of the bolts.

Do you need the actual GM part? I brought an aftermarket part (did not know) from A1Auto a really reliable place. The dealer was like of course you need the GM part and we sell it for $429!!!!! The part I paid for was $181 I replaced the part not the line. Did everything you did code still popped up and getting a stablitrak error on dash and low engine power. I will change the line and see if that works because they swear that was the issue and because it wasn't a GM part.

Have you tried to set any codes that come back? I used a genuine pump just to be on the safe side. Any critical parts that I replace like, water pumps, thermostats, high pressure fuel pumps, solenoid sensors I use OEM dealer parts. When I install the new pump and put it together, I had a code still popping up, but when I had reset everything the code went away and has never return since then.

Yes get the fuel feed line too! The dealer mentioned that fuel line is a one time use.

I had the same problem! When I would first start the car, it would shake after idling 5 mins. Also when I would shut the car off there will be a slight delay for the engine to shut off. It was like fuel was still getting through and burning inside the chamber.

Great job ..👍🏼 I saw a different KZfaq video where they were replacing the pressure pump but the guy did something with the engine where he rotated to get it to the lowest point before he put the pump back in and there's a little cup in there he pulled out and installed it on the pump before he put the pump in I see you didn't do that I don't know if you skipped it or you just didn't record it but I was wondering if that's part of the replacement because I'm going to be replacing mind and I've never done it before just wanted to make sure if it can be done either way?

Either way Is fine. If it’s your first time, Do not rotate the engine. I did not skip any steps , what you saw is what I did. The high pressure fuel pump has a spring on it that compresses against the lifter cap. The high pressure fuel pump came out one way, you’ll have to put it back in the same way it came off. When you put back the bolts make sure to tighten them in an alternating way. Make sure the pump is flat on both sides when torquing the bolts. When you tightened the pump, it will push the spring into the lifter cap , just like it was in the first place. You’ll be fine for sure. Also note: do not buy a cheap pump make sure it’s an AC delco original one!

@loganator78r you bet!! High pressure fuel pump, camshaft/ exhaust sensors, oil consumption just to name a few of them. Ohhh and let’s not forget the water pump! When that goes, shops love to charge over 1k to do the job! A failing high pressure fuel pump will allow for gas to leak down into the cylinder walls and make it down to the oil pan.

Bryant Natal, first off were you able to pull any codes? Remember you need 3 things to be able to start the car (Spark, Fuel & Air) It can be several things that may cause a no start. Check the battery/ starter first then move on to the fuel. Keep us posted!

@@bryantnatal , try checking your fuses and relay to make sure they are good. Also when was the last time the fuel filter was replaced? Have tried tapping the lower bottom of the fuel tank for a few seconds and try to start it?

This can be many things! It can be a bad fuel regular, it can be a bad fuel pressure sensor or in some cases a high pressure fuel pump. I’d get the car diagnose first before making any moves.

It’s hard to tell not having the car in front of me. Is that the only symptom you have a reduce power? Sounds like your not getting the correct fuel pressure. Might be a faulty fuel pressure sensor. It can also be the height pressure fuel pump. Check your dipstick and get a smell sample off the oil and see if it smells like fuel.

I happened to just buy my 2012 equinox and 3 weeks later it started sputtering and then one day it said reducing engine power shortly after cutting off on me. Looked up reasoning and it said because of bad oil or low oil. Safe to say it was just my oil. I had no oil really in tank. Rushed my vehicle to get oil change/put in so my engine light went off and reduced power off. one thing to note as a female looking for her own vehicle.(check the oil before buying (close call). I still need a fuel pump because I’m burning way too much gas and it’s having a hard time picking up speed and accelerating.

@@tperry484 I would watch the oil level every 1 thousand miles on this equinox. They tend to burn a little more oil than usual. Totally normal but unnecessary. If the oil is a little low just add some oil in between oil changes.

We have to try this. The so called mechanic says thats not the issue? It wouldn't go past 25mph, the suv was stalling, the lights would not cut off after we cut the veh off. When he test drove it, he said it ran fine?? What do u think??

Sounds like you may have a bad throttle body. A bad throttle body can prevent the car from exceeding a certain speed limit. It can also cause a car to stall. Did the mechanic properly scan the vehicle?

Excellent video. New subscriber. I had to unplug my PCV system by removing the HP fuel pump and intake manifold. Everything installed (including a new HP fuel pump gasket w/ o-ring (o-ring broke)). Started it up, and engine shakes with check engine code -P0203-00 Cylinder 3 Injector Control Circuit with misfire (P0300-00) Any idea what might be wrong? 108K miles. (New plugs at 100K). Wiring? Leak? Slow acceleration. HP fuel pump was extremely dirty around the spring with a lot of oil and carbon I sprayed off with cleaner. Anyways.. Thanks a bunch!

Did you replace the O ring that broke?? Pull the plug on Cyl 3 and check the status of the plug. Check and make sure all your connections are properly made!

@@Fwerks.1592 Replaced the o-ring and gasket (which came as a kit). Double checked all connections. Tested #2 and 3 ignition coils with multimeter. Identical readings. Noticed that #3 spark plug is EXTREMELY dirty. (#2 was clean in comparison.) Replacing #3 spark plug- hopefully that fixes it. 🤞 If so, then I’ll replace all spark plugs so they’re identical in life.

@@Fwerks.1592 Well, that did not work. Could be timing chain (although nothing is rattling). Funny that it's only cylinder 3's spark plug that was dirty- like it had 100K miles on it. (They all only had 8K miles on them.) Wondering if oil has been leaking into #3- oil gets dirty quickly and I have to top off with a quart in between oil changes. I hate this f$%*& engine. Drove it in (with 3 cylinders firing) to my mechanic. Stay tuned... $$$$$

@Olga Puentes, the sensor is all in one unit . The only way you can change the sensor is if you buy the entire pump assembly. I don’t think they sell the sensor separately.

Upon start up the rpm’s where bouncing / rough idle. There was definitely no smoke coming from the tailpipe. It felt like a misfire.

Honestly, I don’t think that would be possible since there are small tabs that would need to be pushed in by the tool. I would suggest buy the 14$+ dollar tool and save headaches!

The intermediate fuel pump line is required to be replaced when replacing the fuel pump.

It is not required to replace the line if you are undoing it for the first time. The material on that fuel line is soft and if removing it a couple times, then you will be forced to replace it. I’ve done a few bmw injectors before and it requires to remove all the lines for each injector. The manual clearly states replace lines after unbolting them a couple times. It’s been over a year and that Chevy equinox is running like a champ, check engine light free and leak free. I guess at the end of the day you can replace the line along with the pump that way the you know the job is well done! Or you can still get away with using the same line if it hasn’t been touched before. In my case I honestly forgot to order a new line.

I would definitely put this repair anywhere around $500- $650 is they also do an oil change. The OEM HPF pump is well over $350 just alone.

Well very good question! The fuel that has been leaking into the cylinder walls falls down to the oil pan. Fuel is mixed with the motor oil and that will cause your oil to be thinned out. Plus you never want fuel mix with your oil. This will decrease your oil lubrication properties inside the engine moving parts!

Are you referring to the low pressure fuel sensor? That one is located on the front driver side. You will need to remove the wheel and right by the steering rack you will see a purple connector that connects into the low pressure sensor!

So I just wasted money going to Jiffy Lube getting a oil change and full system cleaning fuel throttle GDI2STP when I thought from them that’s the problem. Not even two hours the “Losing Power Comes on” and then the same thing keep happening when shutting of the vehicle with the keys it stay on for seconds and kind of shakes when it cuts off. Damn I should’ve watch this video before I paid that extra money and just buy the fuel pump like your video suggested. Smh
