2016 Chevrolet Equinox 2.4L Ecotec High Pressure Fuel Pump Replacement and oil change.
Had code P0172 (rich condition), dieseling (engine stumbling to die when shut off), and smell of gasoline in oil.
Fairly simple job. Maybe 1 to 2 hours to replace.
Parts:
GM part EP1028 for Fuel Pump about 185$
GM part 12608374 Fuel feed pipe about 50$
5 quart 5w30 syn and Stp S9018rxl oil filter
Tools:
10mm and 5/16 sockets with extensions
automotive trim tool
5/16 Fuel line disconnect tool
17mm wrench or line wrench
32mm socket for oil filter housing or channel locks work

Hey, just wanted to say that your camera angles were superb for helping me along with swapping the pump. Now my wife's car isn't dieseling, and there's no longer fuel in her oil. Really appreciate the thorough walkthrough!

Great video! I did this yesterday on a 2012 Buick Verano. To anyone planning to do this repair, this video exactly describes the process. Do plan to change the oil while stuff is out of the way, and don’t be surprised if the oil reeks of gasoline. Definitely change the oil.

Tip* Didn't know it at the time, but it would be worth replacing the cam follower while the fuel pump is removed.

Hello Sir , did you check the cam follower that is between the camshaft lobe and the pump shaft for wear ? Do you recommend to change it ? Thanks

Yes sir. I pinned the top comment that I would recommend replacing the cam follower. It's easy access and cheap.

I have the same issue and it seems like a straight forward fix. In some videos they suggest finding the low side of the cam shaft. Is that necessary?

I can't see the fuel pump spring giving you any issue if the cam lobe was on the high side, so I'm gonna say don't worry about that.

I did not have to do that. I did be careful and tighten the bolts slowly and evenly to prevent any canting or binding

Thanks for the comment. I was interested in how the pump actually worked. If I have another one to replace, I will try to tear it down and find the leaking seal.

I'm curious I have a 2013 GMC terrain and it stalls n kicks after starting it doesn't matter if engine is hot or cold during the day,After I start it a second time doesn't do that stays running and only does it on the first turn of the key ,Did you have any check engine lights before telling you that it was the fuel pump because I don't have any check engine light showing up for anything

We have different issues. I did have codes but it was just indicating a rich condition. Yours does sound like a fuel issue, Not sure if it's a pump or something else without looking at it.

I think the terrains started direct injection around 2010, so I think you do have a high pressure fuel pump, but our issue was a seal leaking fuel into the engine oil. Your first step would probably be checking the fuel pump and the pressure upstream of the high pressure pump and then troubleshoot the pressure downstream.

@@treyhaberman OK thanks for the response,I was also thinking something to do with the fuel ,it is 2013 terrain it has a high-pressure fuel pump same as yours in the videoI also did smell fuel on the end of the dipstick with the oil I'm stumped because I have no check engine lights and after the second start it idles fine and the RPM stay at 900 and drives fine it's only upon starting the first time like it's not getting fuel or something so I gotta turn it over the second time for it to run

@alhavana9426 well if you think it may br leaking that bad, that it won't even stay running then you definitely would see that on the fuel rail pressure

@@treyhaberman It's not leaking like that bad I barely smell the fuel but i do smell it on the dipstick l don't know maybe I have the same problem where a small amount of fuel is getting past that spring n seal on the high-pressure pump like you were saying about yours I don't know I gotta find a way to check the pressure on it too, anyway apreciate your input and help

It's what runs between the fuel pump and the cam lobe.

It’s an important part of the installation. Always replace it. The pump won’t run right if it’s worn down. Why the pumps get loud it’s that part. Sometimes the roller is all that’s wrong with the pump.

Got all of the parts to do this on a 2012 Equinox that my daughter just bought. Lumpy idle, rives fine below about 3,000 RPM, but if you give it WOT, it will say "Reduced Engine Power, Service Stabillitrak". Figure I would start here since the 'Nox has about 192,xxx on it. Got the pump, fuel line, and cam follower to do it all at once. Hopefully this fixes everything. Has also shown the throttle position sensor code which would point to the sensor in the gas pedal. Only other code that does not make sense is the P0291A. Previous (original) owner just replaced the MAF sensor as well. Considering a one owner car that we only paid $2,800 for with a file folder full of dealer service records, I figured it is worth put a little bit into to get it running right. Any other thoughts as to what I could be missing?

Did you smell fuel in the oil or does your Nox continue to run and then stumble and die after you shut off the key?

@@treyhaberman It does not do the "dieseling" when I turn off the key. Haven't smelled a noticeable fuel smell when pulling the dipstick. The pump area is really noisy when running; more so than you would expect on a GDI motor. I have heard of the cam followers going bad, so that could be making the racket and/or the pump could just be worn out with 192K miles on it. My next thought is the actual injectors could be shot, and/or may the throttle body. Since we talked the seller down $1,450 from what he was asking because of knowing I could be chasing some electronic gremlins, even if I end up doing the injectors and throttle body as well, the cost of all those parts plus the HPFP and cam follower, I'll only be out ~$800 in parts, but then I will know it is all new.

@tomcunningham2063 yea, the problem is different then the equinox I worked on, but I was about to say it sounds like an injector issue. Since you bought the Hpfp, might as well install it because they are prone to failing. Good luck buddy.

@@treyhaberman Thanks. Working on process of elimination. I can't recall the code off the top of my head, but it was one to do with a lean condition on bank 1. Again, looks like this vehicle was taken good care of by the one owner (Interior literally looks brand new and only 2 dings I found while washing it) so I think there is value in going through the exercise.

Just did the fuel pump yesterday. Took about an hour. Fired the 'Nox back up and all check engine lights were gone. Thanks again for the great video.
