That was very helpful thank you. I did a brake job on my wife's car before and it's doing exactly what you described the pads are super hard to put in and it was the outer pad that was grinding the pads down to nothing and destroyed the rotor. I thought about putting grease in there but I didn't think it would be a good idea because I thought it would allow dirt to stick. thank you for making a very clear concise video you just save me a ton of time and money having to do this again later.

Glad this helped you. Thanks for your feedback. The grease will hold a little bit of dust, but next brake job new grease replaces the old so it’s not really an issue.

@@JoesCarSmartsNY that's good to know because I think it's starting the problem on the other side that I had redone as well and it's probably the same thing it's just the pads are too tight in there so I'll be checkin that one over and I'm off to the store for grease. You are a great teacher!

I rarely ever find aftermarket rear pads that fit correctly. I just had to do the same thing on our 2016 Acadia. The rear pads were almost seized in there. Thanks for the video

I find the same thing. I always have to make at least a small adjustment to the new pads.

I have never had to grind new pad to make that fit.

I don't find it necessary every time, but there are times when I find it necessary to make sure the pads don't bind. I think it matters what parts I use also. Some brands aren't as precisely stamped as others.

I was going to say, those brakes look new. Understanding that tightness is the issue

Good video, grinding the brake pad, doesn't it compromise the integrity of the brake pad? Just wondering, I'm not a mechanic I'm learning because sometimes there isn't enough money to take my vehicles to a mechanic which sometimes can be pricey. Thanks

This is a good question. I have done this dozens of times for my vehicles, friends, family, and even customers. I have never had an issue. What I'm really changing is the shape of the backing plate which the pad material is "glued" to. I'm not grinding the pad material itself that actually grips the rotor. The reason for the grinding is because these backing plates are stamped out of thick steel by the thousands and then painted. This can lead to poor quality control in some cases, which causes them to be slightly too thick in certain areas. Also, the amount I'm grinding off is about 1mm thickness maximum. If you choose to grind these backing plate "ears" to make sure they fit snug, but not too tight, just do it carefully, so as to not overheat the metal when you do it. Best of luck to you, the expense of vehicle upkeep is exactly why I learned how to do almost all my repairs myself.

If you don't have the piston tool to press the piston back in...any hacks you can suggest to accomplish the same thing? like thinking cost savings during this time we are all going through? regular hand vise and piece of wood?

C-clamp or rent the right tool from a car parts store. They will only charge a deposit which is refunded when you return the tool.

Before you take the pads off all you have to do is grab the caliper and squeeze it all the way tight against your rotor that is before you remove the old pads and you will have it pushed all the way back in for you then you just pull the caliper off put new pads on and slide it back over the rotor tighten and you're on your way 5-minute job very simple

How many times you pump the brakes
@JoesCarSmartsNY3 жыл бұрын
When you’re done with the job, pump the brakes maybe 5 times and you should be good. The pedal will be firm again when you’re safe to drive.

This is nothing more than a POS Chevy. I got one sitting in my driveway. Don't tell me those are good. I find them to be a piss pore design. I can't stand it. Ch3ap disposable vehicle. The dash, the transmission clam shell, the cheap plastic covers everywhere, the shifty window switches assembly, the radio buttons loosing paint, i can't say anything good about it...

Since I made this video I have also heard nothing but problems about these.
