Hooking the leg to avoid getting slammed in a Triangle Choke from guard. I figure this technique was common knowledge. But I received several questions from new BJJ White Belts who were either slammed in their gym or in competition and unsure about what to do about the situation.
So, I received the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu question so I'll try and give a decent answer.
In this video I give a couple of tips on how to avoid getting slammed when finishing a triangle choke from guard. I also talk about how to hit a Armbar from the triangle if the opponent stands to try and slam you.
All the tips are simple and easy to implement. You may already know them. And chances are, if you don't know them. Your coach will cover them soon enough as this is pretty standard stuff in a BJJ White Belt curriculum.
One of the tips I do share, and needs to be considered is awareness. Always be aware in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu that even in a situation where the slam is illegal. It doesn't always mean that the person is either aware or considerate of it. I've seen several people slammed illegally in Brazilian Jiujitsu by a person who was either brand new and watched UFC. So they thought slams were ok, or at tournaments where someone just thought, "screw it I'm going to slam this person."
I hope these tips on the triangle choke and avoiding the slam help you.
As always, thanks for watching!

Honestly, it really irritates me when instructors don't teach to hook under the leg when they teach triangles. I mean, BJJ is a martial art, in a self defence scenario a slam is very probable. You really should have a habit of hooking the leg, wether they pick you up or not. Just my $0.02

I have heard from an MMA fighter that when punches are coming it's actually better to distance yourself and stay perpendicular rather than getting the angle. I think UFC footage basically verifies it. I'd love to see some details on triangle technique with punches in mind.

Not all gyms have the same dedication to instruction. I know, from personal experience, that a white belt needs to be shown and told a TON of things prior to ever rolling. They or their partner can get hurt. I had no idea if slams were legal the first time I did it... he was choking me in a roll and it was a logical way to avoid the choke. I didn't know how to defend the triangle and I didn't know the rules, but I knew it would make him stop choking me.

In judo (at least the last time I competed), picking someone up results in an immediate stoppage. That way, it's still a legitimate "counter" to a triangle/closed guard, but it keeps chances for injury lower. I know you said you didn't want to cover this (likely because it shouldn't be happening), but it's better that someone reasonable explain it than letting the only information about it be from people who would advise it. Behind you 100%, Chew.

Thats a good alternative for ibjjf rules imho. If you simply ignore that slams are possible for the sake of competition, you lose the art. As any other techniques, there are counters

I specifically remember recently getting caught in a triangle and picking the guy up, but I didn't slam him because.....well I don't know why. I guess I figured that would be bad technique and/or frowned upon. I figured I should just take the L and ask the instructor what to do next time. Glad I did.

I've seen slams even when the leg is hooked. If someone has a strong lower back and hamstrings, they can break the grip of an arm around the leg when standing up.

Senseless Nonsense lol there are guys out there it doesn’t matter how much strength you think you can build there just that much stronger. All the bjj world champs that ever came in for privates are all super super strong. Grips like you wouldn’t believe. Not everyone is a natural athlete. Gyms sell you the technique argument to make money, but the fact is all the best are very strong guys.

What is the significance of shaving across the face rather than putting the leg over, when going to armbar? I ask because I've tried going triangle to armbar many times with no success and was wondering if that detail will suddenly make it all better.

Yes you always want to minimize the space for your opponent when you are switching from submission to another submission or position to another position :) It's like if you got the gift wrap and are planning to go for the armbar from there, you shave your hands across his face while you are putting the legs over to apply the armbar, it makes a lot of difference.

Nice. But you should do it to a guy whose actually an athlete. The he can’t pick you up because your part of his body does not apply. Even with the arm trapped, you use your core for lifting not your arms mostly. I’ve seen plenty of former athletes power through all of that.
