In today's video I will be taking you with me while I go thrifting for furniture to thrift. I love watching Thrift With Me videos so I thought I'd make one for you all! I will be sharing all the do's and don'ts of used furniture shopping. I'll be going to my local Value Village and Goodwill. I'll be showing you what I look for, what I try to stay away from, and what the prices are like in Portland.
Please let me know your do's and don'ts in the comments section! I would love to know your process too!
If you enjoyed this video please give it a thumbs up, and if you didn't give it a thumbs down! Thanks for watching!

You're right. To me there's a lot of junk for too much money. Anyway the mothball scent in the cedar chest is NOT typical. The whole point of using cedar in the construction, is not needing to use mothballs. Cedar itself is a bug repellent. Anybody that puts moth balls in a cedar chest, has no idea what they're doing...and they never deserved a good cedar chest. Ugh And who covers cedar with funky paper and rivets? 😵‍💫

I don't know for a fact, but I'm willing to bet that if the cedar chest were to be sanded down the mothball scent would go away. I saw someone take a cedar chest and redo it plus put short legs on it. It turned out really great.

Yes! I love thrift with me videos, and I'm doing one this week too 😀 Holy prices, Batman! We're similar in Phoenix right now too depending on the store and neighborhood. I bet your store bought those green and orange pieces from a hotel liquidation. Damaged particle board for $20 or more is insane! Thanks for taking us along, I dislike filming in public too.

This was very educational for sure. I love that you call out the overpriced items at Value Village. It shocks me what they ask for items and how badly a shape some are in. And yes to calling out the stickering. Value village is owned by , (I believe the Waltons Son). The Waltons own Walmart of course and are multi millionaires if not billionaires.

Loved this video! Very informative. Due to the pandemic I have not been thrifting recently. Those prices were crazy high for the condition things were in. I loved the cedar chest. I found the two toned leather interesting but not for me. I have watched several videos where people have taken the bottom trim off and added new legs to modernize it so that piece may have worked! Hi -- that "cosmetic bag" you found is called a train case. Made by Samsonite, it was part of a luggage set, and was an essential part of every college co-ed's and newlywed's gear in the 1950' s and 60's. I kept mine for many years.

@@ChicAntiquebyHolly Bummer. I guess the inability of flippers to sell anything remotely like a dressing table is a reflection on the loss of time women are able to (and perhaps wanting to) take for themselves. Sadly it also feels a bit like a loss of romance to me.
@ChicAntiquebyHolly
@ChicAntiquebyHolly Жыл бұрын
@@RevdUp.Art.Fotografer i think that’s posible, but highly likely that styles have changed and vanity/desk needs have also changed. most vintage desks are simply too small for most people who need a desk. the “tabletop” portion of vintage desks does offer enough space from my perspective.

Dressers are bestsellers for me! Everyone needs one. Not everyone needs a nightstand or an entry table or a buffet. Everyone's bedroom has a dresser in it. I haven't really noticed a difference in tallboys or wideboys. They do about the same for me.

Really depressing when you think of it. I’ve watched other people’s thrifting videos and I see them go to six places and get skunked. They’re experienced people like you turning down relatively inexpensive pieces because there’s no profit margin in them. I’m not sure I want to try flipping or not.
@ChicAntiquebyHolly
@ChicAntiquebyHolly 2 жыл бұрын
Flipping furniture is hard. It's a lot more work than most people think ro consider. I am a very disciplined buyer. I have many rules and I don't budge on them because I know how much work I can handle, and what pieces sell for me. I am passionate about what I do. That passion keeps me going most of the time. However, at the end of the day, this is a job. I have to make money to keep doing it. But that doesn't have to be the case for you. Many people do this for a hobby. If you do want to make money, the only way you can get there is by practicing. It takes time. Regardless, if you want to try it, start small. Practice on small pieces, and work your way up to larger pieces. It's hard work, but it can be very rewarding if you stick with it.

@@ChicAntiquebyHolly Thanks for the advice. I’ve got another option that most flippers don’t have. I have the tools and the skills needed to make and restore furniture. I’ll just have to figure out on a piece basis what best to do.

I cant believe how picky you are ,i n Australia we would kill for some of those ,especially at those prices ,and you went straight past 2 beautiful trunks , ,so basically you want a perfect piece for zero dollars , good luck
@ChicAntiquebyHolly
@ChicAntiquebyHolly 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I am picky, and I'm allowed to be. Those trunks were beautiful, that's why I went past them--they are perfect as is. I would never flip something that I didn't do any work to. They could be restored, but I'm not experienced in restoring trunks, so I left them for someone else to take home and cherish just as they are.

What you need to remember is that Holly knows her market: she knows what sells & what doesn't, how much she can sell for & if the work involved is worth the money she can get. I too was envious of the prices - here in NZ you couldn't find a chest of drawers or hutch under $150 no matter how damaged! Also, paint is expensive - DB is $28 per 230ml plus $15 shipping. Good luck getting a profit out of furniture makeovers! Also, don't forget how big the USA is - there is much more scope for bargains on fb marketplace, garage sales & roadside finds. I can't make a living from flipping but I am making over my old & mismatched furniture for myself. I'm just happy to watch the experts like Holly so I can learn & be in awe (plus get some ideas to practice)
