Just a thought to help prevent comebacks on these seals - take some brakleen to the seals mating area on the case to remove all oil,dirt & grease etc.. then add some loctite bearing and seal adhesive (can’t recall the number sorry) around the outer ribbed edge of the seal before pushing in the new seal. It will greatly help hold the new seal in the case. Cheers !

@@PinBall3 good one, sir ! modern childish 'engineers' .....never went to the school of hard-knocks....maybe use angle grinder with narrow wheel, cut groove in axle shaft, with 1/2 of the groove, underlapping that seal. Then, snap 0 ring it in, seal cannot move anywhere.
@rodconner9079
@rodconner9079 3 жыл бұрын
@@PinBall3 Same thought I had! There are a couple ways of doing it. Bushing, whether it be metal/brass/copper or even a plastic (pvc, cpvc, black poly, etc), glue on flange or a washer/spacer at the seal. Be sure to not get it too tight -- maybe 1/8 gap/play (@ wheel and seal both). It'd keep the seal from walking out. The seal isn't tight at all -- able to push in-place with thumbs (sorta tells me it has or needs to breath/vent)... being plastic/fiberglass, as it warms up, would have a tendency to sweat. The flex in the housing allows the shaft to wobble, walking that seal right out.

The problem is the sideways wiggle allowed by the rs800. It allows the shaft to work the seal loose over time.I solved this problem by cutting two equal lengths of galvanized pipe and putting a washer up against the seal. It keeps everything right in the middle with no wiggle. Replaced seals 3 years ago and no problem since.

I wouldn't use a metal hose clamp. I would use a zip tie to provide you with some peace of mind. The metal clamp will only trap dirt and other debris and this could cause premature seal damage.

As a mechanical engineer in the auto industry, I remember the fear when Ford Festivas went to 4 and Renault LeCars went to 3 lugs per wheel. So, with my 40 year old JD214 still sporting 5 lug bolts per wheel, I was enlightened in this video to see that modern riding mowers are using E-clips. It makes sense from a cost standpoint, but I haven’t purchased a mower in 20+ years. So, I didn’t know. Also I was interested to see the seal can push in by hand because I could not envision a seal driver (or deep socket) longer than the axle stub that would allow the seal to be “driven” in. As always, it was a great video that I’m sure helped people with modern mowers either save money or understand what they were paying their local mechanic/chickanic to do.

It's actually insane how much better my old 1975 wheelhorse is built compared to riding mower today haha I mean everything down to the manual transmission and the axles is so much better on my wheelhorse .. and husqvarna makes two types of riders. You need to be careful when buying them because they make a cheaper version- plastic trans and other cheap parts. And they make a very well built version with good parts and no cheap stuff but they look the same for the most part so you have to actually know what models are made which way.. or you can usually tell by price but that's not a guarantee :)

I have a 99 Sears 16.5 Kohler 42", 6 speed. I want another 6 speed. Amazes me that they only sell autos or whatever they call them. What's the worst that can happen with a stick, pop the belt? I wont buy a new mower when the time comes. I'll keep fixing this one until the engine dies. Then I'll Frankenstein something. Has to be a stick. I might not have brakes but that just means I use a lower gear going down hills. Mine came without the clutch adjusted that gives you 'sort of brakes' with the clutch. I looked up a JD 100 and the screw was in the same place. So I sort of have brakes. Yay.

Caution! If you fail to put the key in the axle it will cause the brakes to not work as well The brake pedal locks up the transmission and without a key on the axle the wheel will turn even with the axle locked. The way she has shown to install the key is the best method as you are sure it is in place. Do not put the key on the axle first and then install the wheel as it is likely to push the key off the axle out the back and you will not notice it. Always spin the wheel after installing the wheel and key to make sure they are connected.

That reminds me of an 80’s Trans Am I restored. The rear axle leaked gear lube because the seal had spun and rounded out the housing to where a new seal could be pressed in easily with two fingers. Since I didn’t want to do the job twice, I made sure that the housing was absolutely, thoroughly degreased with brakeclean then epoxied the seal in place. Six years later, still no leaks.

a lot of times a seal will blow out because the vent on the gearbox is clogged and won't allow pressure to escape when the oil and air in the gearbox gets hot and expands. I've seen it happen on a couple of trucks I've owned. The pinion shaft seal on the axle got clogged with mud and the seal blew out. I don't think it happens all at once but every time the oil gets hot it moves it a little bit and eventually it pushes it out enough to cause a leak.

I can easily see why the "seal" comes out. Absolutely nothing is holding it in place. If that is their design, they are looking for service repairs. I would total clean the housing to bare material with no oil or grease and coat the new seal, on the outer diameter, with some type Loctite and allow it to dry/cure before moving the mower. Odd they didn't have a "C" clip groove with a "C" clip installed to hold the seal in place. JMHO

I liked your video, however, when you press the new seal into place, it went in way to easy. What I have done in the past on similar unit, I used gasket silicone and put on the outer flange of the seal. Once seal is installed, let it overnight so the silicone sets up. That has usually kept the seal from popping out again. We just need to remember, the manufacturer want to either sell customers a new transmission or a whole new lawn tractor. Raise the prices and build them cheaper!

Hey Chickanic, love the channel. You refer to the transmission as being made of fiberglass. It's most likely a glass filled injection molded compound. It consists of tiny glass fibers mixed into a molten compound which is injected into a mold. Regardless, it should be able to be molded with tolerances that would retain the seal better. It shouldn't just come out of the housing like that. Thanks for bringing this up. I never knew they were making these housings with this process and material. I think it has potential, it just needs refinement. Keep up the good work.
@landonedwards7504
@landonedwards7504 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! I used to be in plastics compounding. If the housing is made to automotive standards (and it probably isn't), the "fiberglass" could be glass-filled nylon 6 polymer. That's commonly used for under-the-hood applications because it takes a lot of heat and resists expansion/deforming. (Nylon 6 melts around 420-450 degrees). It also has some wear/durability traits. So the loose fit of the seal is likely more of a molding tolerance issue than heat or wear and tear. The housing is probably made to allow for replacement with no tools - another way of saying with no acceptable level of quality. Once again, it's true - you get what you pay for. Unlike with an automobile, where components aren't allowed to just fall apart (unless it's GM in the 1980s & 90s).

if you smear some silicone on the outside of the seal do you think it would hold itself in the housing better?...that looked like a very loose fit if you can just push it in that easy.

Yes if you use gray or black RTV on the outside of seal it will hold it in place and you wont have anymore trouble I've done it many times on these and also another issue to watch out for is to keep the top of that transmission clean from debris if it builds up it will start to hang up the forward/reverse pedal

I have a Husqvarna rider. I fixed my seals and added a homemade seal pop out preventer. I used 2 large washers that just fit the size of the axle. The inner one is the same size as the seal the inner one is a little smaller. Then I cut a piece of pvc pipe wide enough to take up the space between the wheel and the seal but narrow enough it doesn’t rub. Maybe 1/16” clearance. 2 years later seals are still in place. I have found the bouncing and flex is what makes the seal pop out. This spacer prevents the seal from popping out.

How about a video that shows the best way to change the "lifetime" oil in a sealed transmission. My Kubota T1760 has a sealed transmission and lifetime fluid. IMO there is no such thing as lifetime fluid. All oils break down from heat, dirt and age. I've had this mower for 23 year and it is still going strong, cutting 3 acres over rough terain once a week.

I had a hard time believing those seals did not have some kind of retainer on them. So I went out and looked at my Husqvarna and there is a large washer on the face of those seals and a spacer that faces the washer against the wheel. So it looks like you’re missing parts. That seal should never be expected to stay in place without a retainer.

It seems the "flex" in the plastic case forces the seal to grab the metal axle and walk itself out over time. I added a flush circlip to each side of mine and it's held perfect for years now. Poor original design.

Did you have to cut a groove in the axle to keep it from sliding? Do you know what size circlip? Lastly, is ther a zerk fitting to add grease back into this trans?

When I was shopping for a new lawn tractor years ago, bought a Husqvarna with a 54" deck and Kohler 27 hp engine back in 2005. Owned that machine until 2019 it never gave me a bit of trouble of course I maintained it best I could changed oil regularly and serviced the mowing deck every year: cleaned the deck and painted the underside every year and I pulled the spindles and lubed them every year. Gave that machine to my daughter and it still gives good service. Bought another Husqvarna rider in 2019 with 54" deck and Kohler 26 hp engine. That one has a heavy duty fabricated deck (as opposed to a pressed steel deck) so far having good luck with it one thing that disturbs me though is I heard the spindle bearings are pressed in cartridge bearings so I'm not sure I'm getting grease to them even though I lube them through the zerk fittings every season. No oil or grease leaks anywhere yet but I'm keeping an eye on them. Good info in these videos.

9 is the spoken number, not counting the printed titles and headers. Very cool info. I do small engines as a hobby, so I stay way from riders (no good way to get them here, and don't really want to haul tools to do housecalls), but this is good info to have when advising friends about what they are buying when they ask. And they always ask. The blade video was helpful also. You explained it way better (way more better, as we would say in Michigan), so I can better explain it to my customers. Thanks again.

Good video... I think you just demonstrated what to avoid when shopping for "big box store" mowers. So how much did the manufacturer save with plastic parts - 5 bucks? I've always purchased my mowers from a John Deere dealer and never had transmission problems.
@johnphillips4342
@johnphillips4342 2 жыл бұрын
Agree, I have owned 2 JD lawn tractors from dealers and have never had a leak problem with the transmission. The only issue I've had was the aluminum alloy pulley that sits atop the hardened steel drive shift gets rounded out and loses the ability to grip the drive shift causing loss of propulsion. Otherwise my 22 year old mower works great. The stuff from the big box stores is overpriced junk, can't believe JD allows their name to be on them.

I’ve got that transaxel on a Huskvarna built Craftsman. So far so good. The thing has 400+ hours driving up & down my hillside acre. Said that, Its getting a bit sticky shifting from F to R. At end of this season, I’ll hoist it up and see what I can do. Btw, As far as flexing housing, internally its spur gears to final drive are somewhat radiused to accomodate its housing flex. I think its a decent gearbox, just has shortcomings with its exposed shifting linkages and no retention for output seals.
