that 3 was a bit harsh. The UFO shaped dumpling was still dumpling. the rule didn't specifically call for jiaozi styled dumpling only and if the wonton can make a pass then so should this
@alanjyu
@alanjyu 2 жыл бұрын
The UFO style dumpling required significantly more effort than the wonton. The three individuals that made dumplings were assessed on their own ability to make their dough and to fold their dumplings nicely. Wontons are not designed to look nice and pretty. They don't have the thick skin that a dumpling does. They are designed to sit in soup, although sometimes they can be boiled and simply dressed as is done in the Shanghai style. They require very little effort to make and are significantly cheaper than a dumpling if you purchase from a restaurant. So, I really disagree with how this video turned out.

I don't care what anyone says, Chinese got the dumpling game on lock. I'm half Korean but I do actually have some Chinese ancestry, and I LOVE how Chinese make dumplings. Wontons are definitely dumplings! Every culture has some kind of dumpling, which is pretty cool. They don't even need to contain something in a pocket (like with chicken and dumplings). I was lucky to be raised by my Chinese mom who taught me how to make dumplings and I have put my own recipes too. I like to use medium fatty pork and chopped shrimp, lots of finely chopped Korean leek, spring onion, garlic, a bit of soy and sesame oil and white pepper. A splash of fish sauce and a little oyster sauce. Sometimes some finely chopped kimchi. Thin wrappers if steamed or the slightly thicker ones for deep fried. You shouldn't need much dipping sauce but I do like that crispy chili sauce in the red bottle with the lady on the front.

lack of terminology on English's part. In Chinese, dumplings are boiled (hence the name, you dump them in water), and are shaped only a certain way. Wonton dough and dumpling dough are also completely different.

The ufo shaped dumplings are quite common actually, not common in a way that the entire plate will be filled with these "ufo" shaped dumplings; but common in the way that when family make them in a batch (usually how its done), we can always get some surplus either the dough or fillings by the end. To clean up and avoid left over uncooked ingredient, we would make these BIG dumplings if the fillings were a surplus, OR if we got more dough we'd make wontons with teeny filling or just plain dough slices (in my family) to be mixed in some soup later.
