Ahhh, the spider plant. It's a great beginner plant. It's a giving plant. And it's one of those plants that will literally take over your space. I had a brief hiatus away from the spider for that reason, and brought it back and it's coming in hot as #226 in "365 Days of Plants".
In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

It's funny that this is considered a super easy beginner plant, and yet as someone who's had many plants for decades, I struggle with these for some reason. I have green one that is doing fine, but the variegated one is full of brown tips. It has gotten a bit better, and the new growth looks good. I ended up bringing that one to work, so I'm keeping a closer eye on it.

Forty some years ago when I had my first house I hung a varigated spider plant in a west facing picture window. I didn’t know any better, but was really lucky because it never burned and had more than a hundred babies which grew and hung from it all at once. Had it for years and years, but looking back don’t remember who I gave it to when life got busy as the kids grew up. My four curly and varigated have been getting morning sun. I guess I need to watch them. Maybe they won’t be as tough as my old one.

I have the spider plant that has the green center and white edges, I have had this plant for over 15 years and I was thinking the other day I need to get in and repot it, cause there are so many plants in the same pot, if I divided it I would probably have about 6 or more plants, maybe even a number I don't want to think about, lol. I am looking for the curly spider plant, and to have the all green one would be fun as well. I grow mine in a north facing window pulled back about a foot or so and she seems happy. Thanks Summer another great plant and I look forward to tomorrow's plant.

The spider plant is definitely a giving plant! lots and lots of babies. Summer, is it ok to leave the babies attached to the mother plant or is it stressing the plant too much? There must be about 50 of them. I've repotted about a dozen already and given some to friends. Just in the last 6 months! It's absolutely beautiful and thriving. So what do you think? Leave it? Divide it? Repot the babies elsewhere? Thanks! By the way, you are my inspiration for starting my incredibly satisfying journey in the world of house plants. I could use some help.. I think I have a "spider plant curse"! Like you, they were my first plants, and I loved them. Then maybe 10 years ago, the ones I had started to develop a problem with the growing centers. The leaves would remain curled up in tube shape and start to wilt and turn brown. This has happened CONSISTENTLY with every new spider plant that I have gotten! Do you have any suggestions about what the problem might be and how I can solve it? PS: I have maybe 100 other tropical plants, mostly aroids, that are thriving! Help!

Can anyone help with a question about my spider plant? I have a five-year-old spider plant that put out 8 stolens for the first time this year and many spiderettes. I've been propagating the baby plants all summer, but am not sure what to do with the stolens -- should I cut them off or just leave them on the mother plant? Thanks so much.
@bridgetbridget9922
@bridgetbridget9922 3 жыл бұрын
Just leave them. They will continue to produce babies. When they become dormant (usually in October to February I believe is the spider plants dormant months) they won't produce the babies. You can cut it then, you can wait and see if it is done with producing the babies and dries up and turns brown and cut it or, just leave it. I was just reading some article where this one grower said she leaves them on and that they produce babies on the same stolon for her for a couple of years while also growing new stolons each year. I've got 4 with stolons now. 3 are my variegated and they have 3 main stolons on each plant and on their main stolons are now secondary stolons growing from the middle of the main stolon and each one is going crazy with babies.

In my experience, the yellowed leaves happen with too much direct light and/or too much water. The ones that were over-watered seem sort of translucent/transparent, limp yellow, and the one in too much sunlight has firm, strong leaf consistency, but appears "bleached" in color.
