Awesome video. I have been shooting my entire life but have never used a shotgun. I've used mostly handguns and some rifles. With all of those years of shooting experience everyone assumes I know it all. I was military police and am a retired Detective. It wan't until watching your video that I understood the differences in "gauge" and what a "choke" actually was. I easily could have damaged a weapon or injured myself or someone else by just buying a shotgun and shooting it without knowing about the chokes, etc.. There may be many more people in my same situation. Thank you very much for a detailed, thorough and informative video. Great job all around. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the info. I just purchased a used Tristar Over Under. Came with two external choke tubes. I know nothing about these. After watching your video I now know it has an improved modified and a modified choke. I plan to occasionaly shoot clays. I friend has suitable property and a thrower. I hope that these will serve my purpose as I have learned the expense of purchasing new chokes. Guns seems to be in good condition and I paid just under $500 for it.

once a barrel has been modified to accept a choke ( my tactical Remington was), then I must always have a choke in there or I'll F-up the threads. Right?
@yankeecowboy10 жыл бұрын
Ed Weibe yes sir will eventually screw it up
@SteelTiiTan11 жыл бұрын
NEVER shoot your shotguns without a choke in it unless it's a fixed or a slug barrel. The shot will destroy the threads where you screw in your chokes and you won't be able to put another choke in that barrel. For slugs, look into buying a slug barrel or a slug choke.

I'm using a Kel-Tec KSG, I purchased A choke tube adapter for it made of steel; can I use this without a choke? I'm asking because I'm under the impression that it (chokes) will negatively effect the #1 buckshot from federal premium with flitecontrol.

Not what I was looking for. I will continue to search for a video that explains what a choke tube is for. I'm looking at purchasing a Mossberg or a Remington 12 gauge for home defense. The remmy has threads for a choke tube while the mossy does not, and i'm trying to find out what the hell they are for. Thanks for the vid anyway.
@Jack_The_Biker9 жыл бұрын
Choke tubes are used to control the patterning of pellets fired at certain yardages, if you are just buying a shotgun for home defense you most likely won't need a choke tube but if you are going to be hunting with it as well I'd suggest you purchase the remington since it has the ability to accept a choke tube and will be more flexible to your needs

I prefer the Mossberg cylinder bore, 18.5 inch barrel for home defense. Since there is no choke tube, you never have to worry about what type of shot,, steel or lead,, etc. When I want to hunt, I simply change out the barrels to a 28" that accepts the Mossberg Accu-choke tubes. And remember,, never, ever,,, fire a slug through a barrel with a choke installed. To see what each type of choke does,,, at what ranges,, do a Google Image search for "choke tubes",, and there are many charts to help out. A smooth cylinder bore,, for home defense,, max's out at about 25 yards with a 40" wide shot string (the amount of spread for all the shot).
@Jack_The_Biker9 жыл бұрын
Karl Smink its ok to fire slugs through a choke, I have a benelli nova and rifled slugs shoot just fine out of it with a modified choke, I just wouldn't recommend full or extra full chokes if you're using rifled slugs, as for sabot slugs I wouldn't use a smoothbore at all you won't get stabilization needed and the slug could keyhole so I would recommend investing in a rifled barrel if you wish to shoot sabot slugs in the future

Notches and names don't mean a damn thing really. If you've patterned or mic'd anything Browning you would understand. Chokes should be labeled by constriction. Benelli, Beretta, Browning, Remington, not one MOD choke matches the constriction of another manufacturer.
