Cylinder? Full? Improved Modified? Shotgun choke tubes can be confusing, so Brownells Gun Techs™ Steve Ostrem and Caleb Savant explain some choke tube basics for us. From narrowest to most open, the common chokes are Full, Improved Modified, Modified, Improved Cylinder, and Cylinder. There are others, like specialized choke tubes for hunting turkey, but these are the closest to standardized constrictions. There is no Official Choke Tube Authority that sets standards, so tubes tend to be manufacturer-specific. Read the specs to find out the exact constriction of a particular choke tube.
Waterfowl hunters have to use steel shot by law. Steel shot tends to pattern tighter than lead shot. With steel you typically want a choke that's one step more OPEN to get a pattern similar to what you would with lead shot. Example: If you're shooting an Improved Modified choke in lead, you'll want to go with a Modified choke for steel to get a similar-size pattern. But be careful: if you use too tight a choke with steel shot, the intense compression from the wad will actually cause the shot to scatter excessively when it finally clears the gun! This can damage the choke or the barrel itself.
The maker of your shotgun or the choke tubes you're using in it will tell you how tight you can go with steel shot. While we should try to be flexible, Steve warns us about how shotgun barrels can FLEX in a bad way. Hint: avoid shooting steel shot through an old double-barreled shotgun with fixed chokes.
Now, for the deer hunters, what about SLUGS? The basic types of slugs are the (1) sabot slug with a smaller-caliber bullet inside a plastic sleeve, (2) "pumpkin ball" rifled slug with fins that cause it to spin in flight, and (3) the old-style "chunk o' lead" finless slug. Good news: RIFLED choke tubes will work with all 3 types of slugs. With normal choke tubes, you should use only Cylinder or Improved Cylinder with slugs.

Instead of steel shot the correct term is nontoxic shot. Steel shot is one of many different types of shot that legally can be used waterfowl hunting.

Fabarm states that their comp barrels (on my Elos 2 Allsport anyway) are safe to use with super steel shot in any constriction choke (inc. extra full) on account of their barrels being proofed to 1630 bar. I won't be trying that anytime soon though. I imagine the pattern would suffer too much, i stick to mod. choke with steel for all my ESP comps.

There is also a caveat regarding chokes which is that carlsons for example label their constrictions to steel etc. And oem chokes are labelled for lead. So even though a ported cremator lr is labeled full, its actually the same as an oem mod.

The Department of Energy nuclear security team ran tests in the 1980s on the use of buckshot in tight chokes. They determined that a 14" Remington 870 12 gauge barrel fitted with a full choke produced tighter patterns than larger chokes (or no choke). This allowed them to hit targets at extended ranges with greater impact, i.e., more shots in the kill zone. This logic should apply equally well to deer hunting.

Waterfowlers are not limited to steel shot there is now bismuth and tungsten. Choke tubes that are not expressly marked for hevi shot should not shoot hevi shot. steel shot should not be run out of a stock full choke. Depending on the size and velocity of the steel it should (bb or larger at over 1400 fps) not be ran through an after market long range or full choke. Unless you are using a mossberg ultimag system such as the 835 or 935 or 10 gauge that all opens a new can of worms.

I run Carlson choke tubes, i run an old 870 my dad gave me when I was a kid so I like to protect it from the crazy modern hunting loads available. To me the extended choke tube is the best way to protect my shotgun and run the modern loads as the primary choke restriction and all of that force associated happens in the extension of the choke and not in the old barrel. I’d rather order another choke from brownells then a new barrel because it gets deformed. I do actually have a shorty slug barrel for it just for fun and that is from brownells as well. I know I could use the slugs for deer, but rifles are allowed where i live so that’s what I use.

Easier and quicker to Change tubes between stands, alters the balance of the shotgun, also an extended choke tube will be that bit longer smooth out the load (Allegedly).

If your shotgun has a threaded barrel for chokes, you must use a choke tube or you'll destroy the threading. These shotguns usually come with a cylinder choke tube (it's not technically a choke because it has no constriction).
@Rumblestrip

Correct me if I’m wrong, but what Steve said about the fins in a rifled slug imparting spin once it hits the air is not what I’ve been told. I was under the impression the rifling is just shaped that way to allow the material to have somewhere to go as it passes through the constriction of the choke tube and they don’t really spin much.
@jaydunbar7538
@jaydunbar7538 Жыл бұрын
Correct, it certainly can impart some spin but it’s not the purpose and it’s not enough to make any real difference.
@SlingsAxes
@SlingsAxes Жыл бұрын
Taofledermaus debunked that one. The purpose of the fins is so the slug can be swaged down as it passes through a choke tube.

I have an old double barrel, rabbit ear made in the 1900s and for the life of me I cannot remember who it was made by but it is Damascus steel with a beautiful swirl pattern and I was told that I really should use black powder but it seems to me sense it is Damascus steel it should be strong enough to use smokeless powder. My question is would it be okay to shoot the copperhead BB's out of it, by the way it's a fixed full choke?
@jaydunbar7538
@jaydunbar7538 Жыл бұрын
Damascus has nothing to do with strength in the modern era, the blend of the steel is what matters. hammering it over and over was the only way to get the impurities out making it stronger, it’s been a good bit since that was the case and it offers nothing but a unique look.

German proof houses say you can safely shoot up to 3.25mm steel shot from old shotguns with a cylinder choke. We've had CIP proof marks for steel shot for many many years now. You can send it to a proof house and have them test it for you. A lot of high quality older guns will be fine with steel shot and higher pressure loads, you just don't necessarily want to test it yourself. In Germany, the proofing only costs like 50-60 Euros but it could increase the value of your old shotgun by a couple hundred (if it's generally a good gun)

LOL!!! People who buy "tactical barrels" are being ripped off!!!! Improved cylinder chokes can shoot everything better than a smooth bore. Slugs? Better. #00 buck? Better. Bird shot? Whole lot better. If you feel the need you can put a cylinder bore choke in, there is your 'tactical barrel'. Mossberg 500 for example, you can get a standard 20" barrel that uses chokes. Just an inch and a half longer than the 'security' barrels. Unless you feel the need to look like Rambo there isn't a good reason to buy a 'security' barreled shotgun. Most manufactures of chokes seem to discourage steel shot out of anything more restrictive than a modified choke. Of course depending on shot size, your mileage may vary. The ammo manufactures' websites will be the best place to review their conclusions. Also choke tube packages seem to also have suggestions on them now, it is still best to read what the ammo manufacture has to say.
