Marlena Vasquez is an amazing woman who in the face of unimaginable adversity, her journey highlights the strength and resilience of survivors of domestic abuse. Shot and left for dead by her child's father, she defied the odds, fought for her life, and ultimately escaped the clutches of domestic abuse. This is her story of survival, courage, and the pursuit of a brighter future.
Her life took a devastating turn when she became the victim of a shocking act of violence. After enduring a tumultuous relationship with her child's father, an incident escalated to the point where she was shot and left for dead. The magnitude of the trauma was indescribable, yet her will to live propelled her forward.
Despite the physical and emotional pain she endured, she refused to let her circumstances define her. Through sheer determination, she found the strength to seek medical attention, embarking on a path of physical healing. The scars left by the bullet wounds served as a constant reminder of her resilience and the challenges she overcame.
Recognizing the urgent need to escape the cycle of abuse, she devised a plan to break free. With the help of local resources, including domestic abuse hotlines and shelters, she sought assistance and refuge. These organizations provided a lifeline, connecting her with vital support systems that would aid her journey to safety.
Leaving the abuser behind was only the first step towards her emancipation. The process of rebuilding her life from the ground up was an arduous one, but her determination remained unwavering. Seeking legal protection, she worked with professionals who guided her through the complex legal procedures, securing restraining orders and pursuing justice.
To navigate the emotional aftermath of the abuse, she turned to therapy, counseling, and support groups specifically tailored to survivors of domestic violence. These resources provided her with a safe space to express her emotions, process the trauma, and rebuild her self-worth. In the company of fellow survivors, she found solace and strength in their shared experiences.
Through her own journey of survival, she became a beacon of hope for others trapped in abusive relationships. Speaking out about her experiences, she raised awareness about the prevalence of domestic abuse and the resources available for those seeking help. By sharing her story, she aimed to empower others to break free from the chains of abuse and reclaim their lives.
The story of this survivor is a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the resilience of those who endure domestic abuse. It serves as a reminder that no matter how bleak the circumstances may seem, there is always hope and support available. By escaping her abuser, seeking help, and rebuilding her life, she paved the way for a brighter future, inspiring others to do the same.

Spanish speaker here. The caption needs to be corrected. It’s “chola” with one L, not cholla. The 2 L’s change the pronunciation to “Choya” and that makes no sense at all.

Excellent interview. Marlena is an angel for helping others that are struggling down a path she once walked. She is right, sometimes you just need someone to hold your hand through it, and not many will do that for others. ❤❤❤ May God continue to Bless her and her family.

Sherm stick was named for the cigarette brand Nat Sherman. Brown cigs dipped into some PCP, after a while people just started referring to PCP as Sherm. Also sometimes called Super Kools too, after Kool brand cigs, which were way cheaper in price. I know because I smoked it and sold it. A long time ago...

Stay strong and keep a softened heart. It’s ok to “feel”. Make sure your kids know that and see that so that they grow up not “hiding” or afraid to express feelings. Be strong, be true, be free.
