A great subject choice William and you could not find a better person to deliver it. Now I need to find a brush spinner. Derek

You can save the old acetone and thinner and use them as a first and second rinse, then use new stuff for the final, it actually settles out after time.. doesn’t smell too good but still cleans your brushes ! Great video, and that’s from a professional house painter that knows a thing or two about paint brushes and finishes !

Excellent video with all the info you need to start and finish the job including the clean up. For years I included the cost of a good brush in the finishing stage as I had given up on trying to clean them, I just let them dry and tossed them away.

Some great tips, well articulated! LOL...I have to confess to a good chuckle on the spontaneous combustion thing. About a thousand years ago when I still worked in a cabinet shop , the hack finishers on a job piled a bunch of stain rags in the corner of a garage of a brand new home...well, one can guess what happened. Everyone but those finishers got to do THAT job twice. Extra bonus: it was to be the new home of the district attorney for that particular northern California county! OOOPS

I love watching a professional's tricks. Would you use this same technique to clean a brush caked in water based paint? I just clean them in the sink, but I can never get all the paint out. I do store them in their keepers, so at least I do that part right.

Purchase a small air motor driven parts washer with a wire rack inside and a nozzle that squirts the solvent over parts. Put your thinner in it and install hospital size kotex on the rack as a filter. Wash your brushes in the solvent and get most of it out of the brushes. Then just clean up in a very little clean solvent.You will cut your solvent purchases to almost nothing and your recycling amount down to about 5 gal a year of kotex. Pays for itself in short order.

So I assume that the acetone, etc is only for cleaning up after using oil based paints?(BTW, LOVE the professionalism you display. Shoot, even the tools in the background say loud and clear you are a true professional. The LACK of painters like you in my town is why I'm painting my home myself.)

Never start a brush finishing project without knowing ahead of time how you will clean the brush after using it. Having a plan for cleaning your brush will keep your brushes wotking great longer creating tools you learn to use better after time. After using a brush for a while you will learn what the brush can and can't do.

Thank you Brian. Excellent instructional session, as always much appreciated coming from William! One question: I currently use Nitrile gloves as my go to protection. Is nitrile a good enough barrier to the solvents used? Also, at the snap, I, too, had a little shudder..........
@bnmiller1000
@bnmiller1000 8 жыл бұрын
+Gerry Rovner- Sorry for the late response, was out of town. Nitile won't hold to strong solvents like acetone, yo will need some marked acid resistant.

Where in Southern California can you buy paint thinner? All the paint stores sell a paint thinner substitute which smells like Acetone.

If you buy good brushes it is wise to keep them clean. No one wants to keep buying brushes for every project. I have brushes at least two or three years old that are still serviceable and paint free. I was wondering if it is acceptable to filter back the used acetone for reuse. I do this with thinners from time to time.

I understand that putting mineral spirits down the drain can contaminate the groundwater, so I am surprised to see you washing the brush in a sink. Have I misunderstood the problem of groundwater contamination?

If the acetone does such a good job cleaning the brush, why do you even bother with mineral spirits for the third wash? Why not just use acetone for that as well?

is there anything you do to a brush before you start using it?
@bnmiller1000
@bnmiller1000 8 жыл бұрын
If I haven't used the brush for a long time I wash it first in paint thinner, before using it in a oil-base product, makes it easier to clean at the end of the day.
