Will do! In practice though you should render your timelines at the same frame rate you edit at. Thanks for commenting 👍🏻

Dear Chris, please can you do a video to explain (a least for me 🙂) IF is better to handle a timeline in 1080p and export in 4K (how do that) or do a 4k timeline and use proxy ? thanks for your super video, go on !
@Chris.Roberts
@Chris.Roberts Ай бұрын
Thank you! To answer your question: *if* your footage was shot 4K and you need to deliver 4K, then I would edit in a 4K timeline... Although some people use 1080p timelines, I would use Proxy media if you don't have realtime playback. This way you can deliver a 4K final file, or lower resolution, using the Deliver page. HTH!

A great video, thank you. What I find very challenging, and this would be a great video I think for you, is when I have footage with different frame rates. An example, my Sony A7S3 or A1 at 23…., Action camera and iPhone at 24fps. What is the best practice on timeline, and other clip settings such as frame blending and so on.
@Chris.Roberts
@Chris.Roberts Ай бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion! 23.98 and 24 is *practically* the same frame rate of course... It all depends on several things: what is your delivery requirement and can your cameras record the desired frame rate? If your delivery requires 23.98fps, then the Sony's are set right, but the action cam and iPhone can't be set to the same, you *might* be able to get away with it... If the delivery needs to be 24fps, then the Sony's need to be set to 24 and the action cam and iPhone are both ok. It's far better to shoot at the right frame rate before hitting record than to try and "fix it in post" later. Thanks for commenting and HTH.

Hi Chris - nice tutorial as usual :-) One thought, though - if you create a timeline with its own unique frame rate (Imagine project at 25fps and custom timeline at 50fps), if you were to switch the timeline back to using project settings, I'm guessing something odd would happen with the frame rate, considering that frame rate cannot be changed with an existing timeline? I'm not in front of my machine at the moment to test this. I'm referring to one of the very last statements you make in this video. Thanks again for another exceptional tutorial. Cheers.
@Chris.Roberts
@Chris.Roberts Ай бұрын
Good question. I didn't mention this scenario in the video, but if the custom timeline isn't using the same frame rate as the project then you won't be able to be switched to use the Project Settings - the option will not be available. Cheers and HTH!

Always a confusing subject for me. Eg, shouldn't 60 fps be called fast motion and 24 fps be called slow motion? 😁 File 'that' in the same folder that says f/22 should let in a whole lot more light than f/1.8. 😁 As a beginner and trying to understand frame rates, the advice I saw once that gave me a work flow to adopt was: Always drag your A-Roll first into your project timeline and just answer Yes to the "Change Frame Rate?" popup. Then drag in your B-roll clips which might be recorded at a variety of frame rates. This is similar to your tip in this video, always first check the Project Settings to confirm the Timeline Frame Rate setting.kzfaq.infogaming/emoji/7ff574f2/emoji_u1f601.png

First of all, thank you for your explanation and efforts My question has been discussed during the video, however, I just wanna know if m getting things right, let's say I have a timeline of 25fps ( custom timeline ) and I have this "X" clip of 50fps. If I simply dragged that clip to the timeline and slowed it by 50%, would that mean that I am not losing any frames or would it mean that the timeline has forced the clip to be 25 ( and when I slowed it, now it's kinda 12.5 and things don't seem right ) Whenever I wanna slow a clip I have, I keep asking myself the same question, cause when I try to slow it down, davinci shows the "percentage of slowing" and " frames ", and it always shows me "12.5fps" even though the clip is originally 50fps *( obviously cause the timeline is forcing the 25fps ) BUT I AM SUPER CONFUSED
@Chris.Roberts
@Chris.Roberts 8 күн бұрын
Hi there... Happy to try and help! OK... Essentially, you are right. If your clip is 50fps and you add it to a 25fps timeline, then Resolve will play the clip back at the timeline frame rate... So, instead of playing 50fps, that instance of the clip will play at 25fps... in other words only *every other* frame of the source clip will play... The other frames are effectively skipped. If you slow the clip to 50% of it's originally speed the skipped frames will be played... Slowing a the clip even further will mean frames have to be repeated or otherwise interpolated (which is a whole other subject) Where I think your confusion stems from is what the Speed Change controls in the Inspector? These controls displays the *frame rate of the timeline*, whereas I think they should display the frame rate of the clip instead... Either way, when you slow a 50fps clip in a 25fps timeline, the Speed Change control will display the Frames per second as 12.5. So, it's important to not reply on this value... You need to understand what the source frame rate of the clip is. Hope this helps! FYI, I have another video which might help kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aKuAmc-LldzLdKM.html

If you have already done a lot of editing with the incorrect framerate, can you create a new timeline at the correct framerate and copy/paste the editing to the new timeline?
@Chris.Roberts
@Chris.Roberts Ай бұрын
Yes, you can. Resolve is pretty good at dealing with this. I would always advise double-checking your edits though, particularly for complex stuff.

Hey, I appricite your chanel a lot, can you make an episoid on drop frame fram rate, it's a mistry for me as film background user. we use only 24, second also can you make a video for converting frame rates.

Thank you! I'm glad you find it useful. Drop-frame timecode is simply a fudge that was required for colour NTSC video systems. If you need to work drop frame you'll know it - e.g. for broadcast NTSC systems. Wikipedia has a nice article detailing the reasons for this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMPTE_timecode HTH!

I like the look of 50fps, so I set my camera to record at this frame rate (I live in PAL land), and also set this framerate in Resolve. But my wife will often contribute smartphone footage, which of course is 30fps because smartphone manufacturers are completely USA-centric, with only limited geographical knowledge of anywhere else. What is the most convenient way to convert this 30fps to 50fps ? Should I just let Resolve take care of it on the timeline, or should I preprocess this footage somehow ?

30 fps in a 50 fps Timeline means that 40 percent of the images have to be generated by Resolve. My guess is that 30 fps would look better in a 25 fps timeline.

If your smart phone app doesn't support 25fps or 50fps then get another smart phone app such as the Black Magic Design app. I would not recommend mixing 30fps footage with your 50fps timeline if you can avoid it.
@Chris.Roberts
@Chris.Roberts Ай бұрын
Ah... Greetings from another PAL-Lander and welcome to the world of compromise that is video editing.... The thing with this situation is that you have to choose one frame rate or another... Working at 50fps, the 30fps footage will need to playback at 50fps by repeating various frames... At 30fps, the 50fps footage will drop frames. Because these frame rates are "off-speed" it depends of the type of footage... Clips with fast movement will suffer more than clips with slow movements. Either way, as you're choosing a specific frame rate, then ideally your wife's smartphone should be set to record 50fps. You'll probably need a camera app for this - as @TheRealBarkinMadd mentioned, the Blackmagic Camera App is good for this on iOS and a version for Android is coming soon. Of course, if you're happy with the results Resolve is giving you then don't worry about it 😉 HTH!
