I just did my breaks. Couldn’t have gone any smoother. The only thing I would have added at the end was to remind to pump the brakes. I got lucky and no damage was done but I had to put it in park real fast because the breaks weren’t pumped. I hope I just helped someone with that info. Everything else was perfect Chris. Thank you.

@@amck72 when you use the old brake pad to push the piston back it doesn't have all the fluid in it when you start your car. So push the brake pedal several times until you feel it start giving you resistance again like normal.

Hey Chris. I have been crazy busy since I first viewed your videos, long story but my wife and I just bought our first home, a fixer upper and we needed a truck to make it all come together. I found a GMC 1994 V6 4.3L 116K and it needed all new brakes and fluids replaced, coolant, AC, and Fuel Filter. You are my go to site, first stop, for any work that I might need to do. I cannot overstate how much I appreciate your work. Not just the what, but How you present your instructions. SIMPLE is not easy or basic, but shows mastery and control, with little left to chance. You have saved me and my wife hundreds if not thousands of dollars, at a time when money is tight and our rental home was repossessed by the bank (after 7 years of loving our life we faced a bit of a crisis). It is a blessing on one hand: a nice house that with a little work will be a great return on investment, but we lost a trusted mechanic because of our move. When every penny was needed for moving and closing costs. I was able to find and fix a low cost vehicle that has plenty of life, but needed some TLC. Your videos, suggestions (tools, Harbor Freight, suggested videos) all gave me the confidence to try. We now have a safe useful vehicle with plenty of life in it, a truck that I use everyday to haul stuff for our remodeling projects. If you think about it, you have done much more than help us with our vehicle. You have helped us buy a house. The world would be a much better place if more people were like you. Until now, I had been paying these shops about $900 - $1,200 for changing rotors and brake pads. Your video is wonderful. I bought all parts for about $400 and changed everything myself. I am a novice when it comes to cars, I can do basic oil changes air filters fuel filters, but never have attempted brakes. This video was super informative, and my first rear brake pad and rotor change took only an hour. The rotor was a little fused in the center but adult of penetrating oil and it came right off. Thanks so much for sharing, made the guy feel like he was a mechanic for a second.

Chris, i gotta tell ya, this was by far the best instructional vid i've come across in a long long time. I must have watched hundreds of "how to's" on a wide range of different expertises over the years, yet I don't think I've ever seen anyone getting EVERY aspect of it PERFECT. hoping that you do all of ur how to's this way i'm gonna check some out right away. In a nutshell, why your vids are perfect in my opinion: 1: HD resolution recording and 100% focus. 2: proper lighting on your workpiece. 3: Impeccable camera angles on every single detail. 4: clear view of what your hands are doing. 5: Straight to work, no lame pre-chitchat. 6: no long stories full of eh's and err's, almost seems scripted. 7: purely informational. 8: stays on topic 9: Attention to detail, briefly mentioning every single step no matter how small. 10: suitable for wide range audience with full explanation front to back at good tempo for those who are familiar with the material, yet without skipping any critical simple basics that a "first-timer" might need to be aware of. So anyways, awesome job man, I enjoyed every bit of it dispite the fact that I failed to fix my breaks in the end haha. the tutorial was very helpful so much appreciated! (piston is completely jammed so can't fit the new disk and pads until I find a replacement caliper.. D'oh!) ...u don't happen to have a video on replacing an entire caliper and bleeding the hydraulic circuit do you?? Greetings from the Netherlands,

Not only do I appreciate the easy to follow and detailed instructions, I appreciate how you point out little tricks along the way (such as using anti-seize instead of brake grease). The tire under the car as a backup is also a great idea, I'm going to start doing that (before I used just a jack and jack stands). Please keep up the good work.

holy crap. Good job you used the wheel. Buy some quality jack stands. NEVER work on a car with only a jack holding it up. That's not what a jack is designed to do. A jack is to LIFT the car, but not SECURE the car. People die in their own driveways. It happens.

I needed help changing the rear pads cause everyone made is sound like rocket science. You just pointed out it's 1 bolt. I love that you started from the start to finish instead of starting with everything already disassembled or in a shop with the car lifted in the air.

I watched so many video on how to do this in lincoln towncar and got really frustrated that most of them only show how to do front; then having their arms blocking the view or camera angled at the floor or their back and I can't see what's being done. And they don't show what to grease. Yours are the first clear and precise. Perfect view on what's going on so I have understanding what to do. I might have to rewatch this video several times as I do every step. Thank you.

Well; old guy (me) watched this video a week ago, ordered parts for the Insight and today; had to deal with rear brake mainsprings. Awful. Finally, happened to remember old trick of pushing end of spring down small screwdriver and pop. In. Having fits with the first front. Took too much apart!!! FINALLY, came in and watched this clip again, thank you very much, again, and saw what I was doing wrong in addition to Never Seize and silicon grease everywhere. Cleaned up my mess and did it your way and the last one did itself. ALSO: your one man brake bleed/ flush works like a dream. I feel so old but a bit redeemed, thanks to you.

Watched your video yesterday and changed my front discs and pads today. It took me 1.5 hours in relaxed pace. My car is a skoda fabia 1.9 tdi estate 2010(UK) completely different car but the process was exactly the same. VERY informative video and very easy explained thank you.

But when his channel popped up on my screen about how to personally change your oil I said to myself “ why not”. Then I headed to a big Store to buy what were required and a ramp. Bam! I changed my oil myself. Since then I have been devouring his videos. Last Monday I registered for a mechanic course in a College. Not that I wanna to become one at 60. Rather to stop the financial abuse of certain technicians. his passion for the trade, excellent communicator, convinced me that I can do this. “Yes I can, right Obama”. Great video! Thank you. For ages I've being reluctant to mess with brakes components with my own hands. 2 decades ago it was said to be carcinogenic etc. Now that I'm starting to get more handy working on various aspects of the vehicle, I'll be giving this a try myself. Some comments: I like how you put the anti-seize on the clip, before putting the clips on the front caliper. For the rear you did the other way around, which risks getting anti-seize onto the rotor. Also, ideally, pop and change the upper clip first. Notice when you changed the lower clip first (rear), and then you go to pop the upper clip -- the dirt from upper clip loosening fell right onto the lower (new) clip's anti-seize. Now the dirt will just be stuck there. Depending on the caliper & bracket, might not want to use wire brush, especially not steel wire brush. It could ruin the anti-corrosion coating. (Whatever the coating is). Ideally use just hard bristle plastic brush if that is sufficient for the job. Otherwise bronze brush is used to clean firearm barrels exactly because bronze is a softer metal (relatively). Folks that have only seen original factory caliper take this anti-corrosion for granted. Those that have seen "OEM replacement calipers" installed by dealers, and being disappointed 2wks after the installation at the sight of corroded "new" calipers, know what I'm talking about. Last time I had calipers replaced, I painted the "new" (refabricated) calipers with G2. (Yeah, and then I took them to a garage to have the guys install them for me.) Again, great stuff. I try to watch ads at begining of your videos to the end so you get some reimbursement. I watched your videos and now I changed my Honda Accord 2014 engine oil routinely. Changed my CVT oil, changed pvc valve, changed warped front rotors and pads, rear pads ( messed up screw head holding rotor so just left the old one on for now) flushed my brake fluid. Plan to change coolant and later sparks plug etc. You are awesome man!!!!

+Jose Angel ABS stands for Anti-Brakelock System. This prevents the tire from locking up and skidding when you slam on the brakes by letting the brakes "slip"

Same here. Changed my back pads and one rotor about a month ago. Changed my front pads today in about 1/2 the time.

@@chrisfix i hace two small pieces of metal joining the break pads. But I did not see you use them and I cannot find place to put them in the new pads. And now I dont know what to do and I'm afraid of drive it like that. They look like they separate the pads from the rotor. It is coming from one pad to the other.

Chris! You saved me soooo much money!!! I went to Auto Zone to get a car jack kit for this project and they all looked at me like I was crazy!! Another very nice customer came up to me and helped me put my jack kit in my car, and I told him I learned how to fix my brakes online, and he said, "I reference KZfaq all the time for my car repairs. There is a guy on there named ChrisFix that does everything! He drives a Hummer." I have no idea if that part is true, but your name is definitely getting out there!!! I occasionally post phone repair "How To" videos, and I know how tedious the instructional video aspect can be! It takes twice as long AT LEAST!! just changed my brake pads for the second time because of you bud, keep it up. I honestly don't know how much they would've charged me at a local shop to do that because I always have done it myself on my own cars, but I know it was cheaper to buy new pads and a C-Clamp than to pay someone else's labor.

you can actually compress the piston by hand without the clamp, put old pad over it and just push it in, try it next time you change pads, if you can't do it by hand that means it's getting stuck, usually water gets under the seal and rust forms, so you need to take out the piston and change it, clean rust etc.

Because of this video I managed to change my rear brakes, and I cannot thank you enough! The only thing I've been doing before is changing tires. The best part of it was that no matter how frustrating it got sometimes, it was really fun. I learned so much and the feeling afterwards was amazing! But seriously, here in Norway, rusted and rounded screw heads are a big issue... Took me 2 hours to get the caliper bracket off. I'm going to start applying grease and cleaning rust every year when I change from winter tires to summers ones so I won't have such stuck screws

I think it's a good idea to clean the exposed area of the caliper piston before squeezing it back so as not to potentially damage the seal with the rust

So, I just changed all my calipers, rotors and pads and bled my fluid on my 09 Accord and all Ive ever done is change my own oil. Ive never even seen someone do brakes before besides on KZfaq. It went great and your video was extremely helpful to the whole process. Thank you so much!

Just changed my front discs and pads on a L200 truck in U.K. thanks to this vid. Really took my time and made sure everything was seated properly and torqued down and it was fine. Lot sharper response from the brakes now with Brembo discs and eicher pads

I've done pads and rotors before, but not for 20+ years so i looked for a refresher, now that we have internet and KZfaq. Looks pretty much the same, but this video gives some nice tips and tricks i had to find out the hard way. Well narrated, well edited. Definitely going to subscribe. And after watching, i was wondering why it would have any thumbs down. Yeah, must have been mechanics and dealers😉
